Well, it's pretty simple, isn't it? you can give reduced prices on time spent, because you profit from parts. Basicly you could also turn this around into: To make money on this job, if you bring your own parts, customers need to pay more per hour. Lots of people won't see it that way, but hey... A man needs to make a living, right? And it's not like, you'll get payed x-sum of money and you can put it in your pocket... You've got to pay VAT (I would assume), Taxes (like everybody), Tools need to be replaced over time. You've got to pay for the building, electricity, and the list goes on. So yeah, I can understand where you are coming from. edit: I was writing this at 6:30 into the video. LOL, you are telling the same I just wrote into my comments 😂 😅

@pete7708

You certainly do have to factor in the technician time even if you are that very technician or you do not have enough money coming in to keep buying the gloves or paying the electric bill. You also have to factor in the time that you need the help of a second person and putting a price on the help from that "wife unit" of yours is something you may not be factoring in, but should.😁😁

Ray, I think the issue most have is not with markup on shop supplied parts but rather being charged for unnecessary parts/labour , either through unscrupulous mechanic or sometimes just incompetent mechanics who don't have proper diagnostic skills. Shortly after buying a used car I decided to change the headlights, bought them for a good price and, thinking they had to be aimed, found a shop to install them after being told by two others that they wouldn't install parts I supply. They could have charged me for aiming them, even though they didn't need to be, but they didn't and just did a good job. I have taken the car back to that shop twice for repairs and maintenance. So that one time they installed my supplied parts, turned me into a repeat customer.

How do they make money? My Ford dealer charges me $60 to replace six quarts of oil and the oil filter. Rotate the tires, and inspect the brakes and suspension. I prefer to supply my own parts because my local mechanic seems to always choose the lowest grade of parts when I let him supply parts. That has caused my car to fail smog tests and result in unnecessary future repairs to discover why car is not running right. Example #1: He installed a cheap version of fuel regulator which failed quickly, when a high quality version was available for just a few bucks more ($3.60). Example #2: He installed a “refurbished or reman Mopar genuine distributor that was actually intermittently defective; a NEW off-brand but functional import substitute fixed this problem eventually. Meanwhile I have to pay REPEAT LABOR COSTS over the 90-180 days that it took for the inferior parts to fall out of local labor warranty and now my car is in the shop 4x instead of 2x. Sorry to say that some shop owners do put personal gain above getting good service to their customers. I don’t mind paying extra for labor if I can use superior parts than what the shop is able or willing to supply. On a minor detail about oil handling: Since you had that nice big oil fill funnel, why not set the bottles in there to drain fully? That would help the environment AND show greater respect for the customer’s costly oil. The added time would be minimal. I think you wasted about a quarter of a quart by squirting those oil bottles …. Just a thought. Otherwise your Vids are entertaining and informative. Great cinematography!!

The only issue I take with markups is when it seems excessive. My A ura had a bad ignition coil. The recommended was a Hitich that cost $35 but instead, the shop put some coil with no brand on it at all and costs me $120 just for 1 coil. I like my mecso didn't say anything and bought the Hitachi coil on my on and installed. I just didn't trust a part with no name on it and worried it was some crap out of China. As for bringing in parts, unless it's a part from the dealership, I would never bring to a mechanic. I learned the hard way that being cheap can cost you more money down the road.

I agree with your "rant" however from a customer /auditors stand point some Garages have got us to this point today by mal practice. ie Customer can buy the same oil filter for $4.00 Shop buys filter for $2.00 Shop Charges customer $8.00. And thats why customers want to supply thier own parts. And in another scenario one that I have personal experience with. Customer with a Subaru WRX pays for a full dealer service. Dealer completes service. Car seems down on power , which is independently verified. Car is inspected and no fault is found for why the car has suddenly lost power. Oil is subsequently independently analysed and proven to be a SAE20/50 . ie the wrong oil. Why is the main dealer using the wrong oil? It's got to be they can buy some cheap SAE20/50 and make more margin. How many customers are going to pick this up? Not many!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One issue with parts provided by the shop is that sometimes you pay premium price for NON-premium parts. I can see where a customer would want to buy his/her own parts for certain jobs. On the flip side is the customer who buys really cheap parts to save money and when the part goes bad, it will be expected for the shop to replace it at no charge. Good job on the explanation.

Hey Ray, I absolutely understand the math and shops need behind it. But on some things, I as a car enthusiast, want to supply my own parts, not in order to save money, but in order to make sure my car gets exactly the part/oil/filter/coolant/whatever that I want. I do tons of research to find the best possible products and that’s what I want on my car. I’m happy for the shop to bill me extra for me bringing my own stuff and their lost revenue, but I simply won’t put shop-standard synthetic oil in my car.
@AnthonyMShadows

My thoughts exactly. It helps when you've developed a good relationship with your mechanic, but also because for the brand specific parts I want, it will end up being the same price whether the shop orders them or I do. And we'd both probably be ordering them from the same place. But this is also why I do my own oil changes and small maintenance stuff, if we're going to be picky about parts we should do the small stuff ourselves.

The problem I used to have with our parts department was they would double the cost of some items. Then, if we gave the customer an estimate to fix their car they thought was "too high", they would complain, and the parts department would not chop their cost down. Hence, the service department had to eat it just to sell the job sometimes. Which would cut into the shop profit and the tech as well if they happened to be flat rate. So, the parts department looks great, and the shop profit margin looks like crap. It's a vicious cycle.

A good number of years ago, I worked on a series of training videos that "trained" young/new technicians on how to change engine oil, transmission oil, wipers, etc. This for for a national chain that does the quick oil changes for a really low price. (The best part of that shoot, was that my transmission oil got changed three times in the course of an hour or two, because we needed a few different takes to complete the sequence.) When you go to one of these places, you get your engine oil changes for something like $30.00 (I don't remember the costs - this is a guess for today..) Now, if you can avoid all the up-sells - and there is a lot of that! - you might get away for an oil change that cheep. But what you don't get is a professional eye on all the other systems, parts and possible problems that come with a fully certified mechanic doing the same work. So, yes, you can have a young man (or woman) do an oil change who have been "trained" because they watched some video programme, or you can have a professional do the same function, but he/she is also looking at all the other stuff down there. And, this mechanic doing the oil change, actually knows what's going on. They are checking for leaks, signs of wear, something that is already broken - you just can't' expect the "oil change person" to have that kind of knowledge. All the training is about just the basics of changing the oil, and how to up-sell products and extra services. Having a mechanic doing an oil change is like having an extra consult on the condition of your car. How is that not worth paying more for? I tell my kids that. Go to your mechanic to get an oil change. It's done right, and you have a professional who can also spot any areas of concern, before they become a problem. Yes, expect to pay more for that, but that's only right. My two cents...

As someone who operated on letting the customers supply their own parts and yrs that means that they were also just given a list of things that they needed to get and had to do any leg work needed to procure it was not always extremely profitable given I knew that when I set up my shop and I did specialize in working with those who were not able to afford any regular type of shop. I grew up very poor and I know what it's like to make a decision between food and needing to get the vehicle fixed to go to work to hopefully make enough money to get food the next week and still not have enough to pay the repair bill. But I did Alot of things that other shops wouldn't do like barely doing what's needed to get the vehicle running to get them to work to try and get the vehicle fixed and keep working or show them how to get it to keep driving with a major issue but if you do x y or z it's still able to keep going and working for them . Not always easy to explain to them look we hoped for the best but x broke coming apart and it is needed to be replaced to go back together and it's going to costs more. Yep. The shop I have been taking my car to lately i thought was pretty good until more recently I’ve realized they acquire a lot of parts from Autozone but mark up the price on them by around if not over 100% from what AutoZone sells them on their website that I would be purchasing from. Because of this i have actually started servicing my own car instead of taking it to the shop. The service that set me over was them telling me I need all new brake pads and rotors and they wanted $1500 for that then I also needed new wheel hubs in the front for another $1000 even though the labor overlaps a lot they were going to charge me as if they didn’t overlap at all. I then do those services myself replacing all pads, rotors and the front calipers (not quoted by the shop) along with the front wheel bearing and also had to buy all of the tools i needed for a total $1500 and being inexperienced I took around 8-12 hours to complete it. So by doing it myself i saved around $1000.
@billchmelik5697
@billchmelik5697 Год назад
@TheRickDarts the exception is that I could not buy the part for his cost. My cost would be about what he charges...that's fair retail price. Moving into an example, a plumber can buy a well pump wholesale for about 1/2 of what I could purchase the same pump retail, he will charge the retail price for the pump, and labor to replace...so what you see is that you still pay retail. You are not being taken advantage of. If you supply your own labor and assume the risk, you can buy the parts retail and diy.

The reason I bring my own oil and filter is because most use bulk oil that lets the additives settle out of solution (suspension) with the base oils! That’s why you must shake the oil container well before use. Check it out at American Petroleum Institute. As for filters most filters used by repair shops (non-dealer) use cheap store brands that are mostly inferior to OEM or premium filters. I’m willing to pay the hourly labor charge. Do you give a choice to the costumer as to the quality of the oils or filters? I find fault with fixed labor charges as the actual repair usually takes less time than the book! I want my mechanic to make a good living and flourish, but I should be able to select what I want used in my vehicles! I do not change brands of oils or filters for the life of my car! This habit has served me well over the years.

I think for me at least, if I supply the parts it's because I'm particular on what parts I want installed. If I leave that decision to a shop I have no idea what the quality of the parts are. I have ran into shops in the past that would have a different hourly rate if the customer provided parts, which is fair. I've always found it best to base the cost of the part on the difficulty of the install. If something requires half a day or longer to replace, spend the extra on quality parts so you're not doing it again in a few years.
@eatshitful
@eatshitful Год назад
Even the best of quality parts will fail if they are put on improperly. If you have a quality shop they will get you a quality part. If you can't trust them to order you a good part why are you trusting them to do anything to your vehicle? With that said i get it there are some parts well above and beyond quality or are some kind of upgrade that the shop does not normally deal with. That is a different story. Then you need a quality shop to install your quality parts.

After the customer left, he said this is an RCA of this chassis number and the antenna lead is broken internally. Sure enough, that was the problem. Including removing and replacing the back, the whole repair took 5 minutes. He charged her $40. He also cleaned a layer of cigarette smoke off of the screen. He called her the next day to pick it up. She was thrilled that the set was done and that he had "adjusted the colors" cause they were much more vivid. He said to me, amazing how cleaning a layer of tar and nicotine off the screen improves the picture. The issue I have is, you’re using oil change labor as the example of losing money. Take a normal job for example, like a wheel hub assembly, you are charging $125/hr so you should be fine. And shops charge retail which is usually double Orielly/Autozone parts for example, so a wheel hub assembly is $50 at Orielly, and $100 retail, but real smart consumers buy from rockauto which is usually half of Orielly/autozone etc.. so the wheel hub is now only $25, and that’s the issue.. it adds up really quick, let’s say you need 2 wheel hubs and cv axles?? We were an independent store, but the owner was also the owner/founder of the business we were located within, so he was able to purchase our stock at really good prices. I still remember using the profit wheel to mark up merchandise, then being allowed to see the P&L statements for the business so that I could see where the "profit" was going, to include my wages. The amount of costs in the background are truly scary, and that the vast majority of people have no clue is sadly no shock to those that experience it every day. I think there is one statement that will cover it the best - you get what you pay for.

"How can you charge someone $40 to replace a $20 filter" I'm reminded of when I was charged $1000 to replace a $100 part. But that part was rear main seal on a 4x4 vehicle, so I understood why there was so much labor involved.

As a small business owner, your explanation is spot on for all retail businesses regarding pricing and markup. Also, I love the explanation of how the air filter replacement could cost the shop more money.

Personally I would rather see Part Prices in line with what I would pay...But increase your shop rates to make sure your profitable. I understand the skill and equipment needed to be a mechanic. I remember getting mad when my wife got new brake pads on her car, and they were NAPA silivers and they were listed higher than a price I could pay. It feels dirty to me seeing that, and I want to see higher wage levels

Its a transparency thing for me. I'd rather have you charge me an extra 50 dollars in labor instead of lying to me about the part price.

problem is many individual shop don't use OEM parts but charge OEM part price. When asked, they will say it's OE part and compatible with your vehicle.

From what I remember when I was younger, a lot of mechanic shops used to charge a higher labor rate when customer supplied parts were involved, and they had a specific waver for not accepting responsibility if the parts don't work or don't fit. My dad, who worked for Goodyear in truck centers for 38 years before retiring, explained to me how it all worked when I was about 16, and how they wouldn't make enough to stay in business if they didn't do those things.

Walmart has synthetics(Name brands) for 5$/qt. I don't understand why I always see online/youtubers talking about 7-10$ qts.

Shops marking up parts is so true! The shop near me that i take my cars to marks up parts by around 100% from what i could get them from any auto store like Autozone.

@@chicagoacountabilityandtra7565 What's even better is the customer brings in a POS autozone starter to be replaced because they trouble shot it. And then it turns out not to be a bad starter.

Good insight on the world of automotive service. I was area rep for BMW of NA and have seen about every variation of what you described and YES you are spot on! On a side note, a former colleague told a story of a guy who worked Sundays at a shop in Madison, Wi - who practiced "it costs $1.00 for every tool he touched for any job on Sunday". Tune ups could run into the thousands....
