RipTide How To: Speed Check (Stand-Up Slide)

Hey folks. The aim of this video is to help people go from not being able to throw a speed check at all to being able to hold them out and stick 'em. I recommend watching the standup 180 video and learning those first, but that's just personal preference. On another note, keep an eye out for a project by RipTide Sports and Enraged Panda Board Co that will be a home for all of these trick tips and more, as well as some awesome product reviews.

Excellent video. I haven't seen any instruction that breaks down the mechanics of a move so well. Two questions: (1) Roughly, how fast do you need to go to start sliding on pavement? (I can slide on wood and expect I have the general idea, but I haven't pulled it off on dry pavement.) (2) Do you have any wheel recommendations for beginners? I'm not concerned about flat spots or high speed control right now - I'd like to get practice and then move to a longer-lasting wheel. Thanks again for putting this together.

sector nine butter-balls are great for learning to slide, just make sure you change them round every few setions so that you don't get ones that are more worn than others

Baby slides. Get some speed and practice kicking the board out a little. Remember those set up carves are important. Your slides will grow! I still haven't slid like in the video but almost everyday I try, I slide a little more.

I have trouble with the kicking part. When I carve into the slide, I put my weight on my front foot, I rotate my hips and shoulders perpendicular to the street but I can't manage to slide. I tried at various speed and on different steepness, but nothing seems to work. I just can't kick my board with my back foot. I just crash into the side walk. Maybe it's because I'm too lightweight for my board's flex? It's a Loaded tan-tien flex 2. Someone help me out, I've been practicing for weeks!
@neuvation6607
@neuvation6607 5 лет назад
CrazyEddy First off, a flex board isn’t the best option to slides but it will work... make sure you have the right wheels a beginner should be using and if you don’t know what I’m taking about just research or ask your shop. Assuming everything you did was correct and youer still hitting the curb, you aren’t carving enough, if you can’t physically carve more experiment loosening your trucks a turn or two and hanging your back foot and and even your front foot off slightly.. a key rule is to not have your toes further back than flush with the side opposite to your heels... following this rule and having better carving along with the right wheels and practicing A LOT! Will make you learn this slide.. trust me it’s worth it.. if you stil can’t slide after all of this work make sure your glove down slides are perfected and just keep going faster and FASTER practicing carving and breaking traction until you eventually learn this slide.

i think you have some of your body movements confused on what they make your board do. Decompression making you board return to facing down the hill is wrong. at 13.10 you talk about the lack of decompression making the slide hook up and make you go across. all of your demo's dont grip up facing all the way down the hill. you just turn after you were gripped up again. other than that i think the vids pretty helpful to beginners

Hey! I do toe and heel 180s but I cant seem to bring the board back in speed checks, I mostly fall of the board as soon as it has turned about 90 degrees. I ride relatively slow, so I was wondering what the slowest speed for doing speed checks is. Should I just focus on the compression/decompression? Maybe i need to take some speed, and learn to hold out stop slides first, and then learn how to interrupt it mid-slide to do speed checks? Please hit me back, im dying to get my freeride fluent!
@wingsauce888
@wingsauce888 11 лет назад
No! Don't do that. Seriously, don't. 86a wheels or above are not very ideal for freeride unless you are getting technical with it. Also, if you're a heavier dude (like I am) you will slide easier, so getting 86a wheels=falling. Sector 9 Butterballs are the perfect slide wheels for anyone, regardless of weight. High duro wheels are icy, easy to slide out while softer ones like Butterballs will slide smoother and butterier. You have a perfect slide wheel.

@superbeedge
@superbeedge 7 лет назад
This is great, but the compression/decompression explanation isnt correct. You can't reduce force by applying more force - i.e. if you are pushing down into the board from a sitting to a standing position you are applying more than your weight to the board, not reducing it, unless you initiate at the end of the push off (ie after the impulse). What you ARE doing though is building inertia in the body to make kicking out easier...

I can get 90 degrees but i always have to jump off the front a bit. Any ideas? P.S On my 180 slide i can get 170 degrees but then my feet get twisted and i jump of the front. I have a 44" and Gravity Hi-grade 76mm 83a wheels. I am scared of going fast and stacking. Any ideas? Thanks

No problem! A good thing to do is put 70/30 weight on your front foot (this is done for almost every slide). What this does is gets you more leverage over your front foot so you can slightly pivot-like slide around your truck. Also, kick out with your back foot. Then just comit.

Hi I'm having problems making that speed check properly. I initiate the slide and the hook up sideways - without this recompression part. I should probably work on balance a bit but I have a question - should I try to work with higher speeds 180 stand ups before? It should help, doesn't it?

i love skatging bike paths, the key is to get good speed, then they r easier to suck back in and ride away, and you can hold them longer so they look better lol

How impactful is the wheel type? I understand there are softer and harder wheels, but will having softer or grippier wheels affect my ability to slide? - Beginner Slider
