Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.

I wish art schools like RISD and CalArts exist here but too bad the art schools here are meant for people in the high class or people in the city. We don't gain much experience and exposure and just rely on the internet.

Clara, your videos are outstanding. I am just discovering your channel and wish I had you as a resource back in 2003 when I was a high school senior wanting to go to art school. I decided to go to RISD and now regret it. I applied to Corcoran, UArts, Pratt, and RISD, and RISD was my first choice. I didn't know that RISD's animation program was not geared to students looking to get into an industry job (I wanted to do motion graphics and 3D). I was young and didn't really do my research, and my parents knew nothing of the art world or the animation industry. I basically followed my uncle's advice (who was a MFA in Furniture Design) and transferred from a small 2-year school called DCAD in Wilmington, Delaware. These days I spend a lot of time TEACHING MYSELF necessary technical skills in Blender 2.9 and After Effects, as well as drawing. My RISD roommate was unhappy with the Animation program too, as she also wanted to work in the industry, so she changed majors to the Illustration department. I wish I had these videos back in the day to help make a decision.

Nice. I've attended classes at other art institutions and I felt that other schools lacked "thought" There's more concept at RISD. An idea of "think before you draw, make a lot of ideas before you decide on one, listen to critiques or perspectives of others, test your prototype a lot" Finished look is good but not so necessary or rather secondary if the concept is strong.

I'm only in my freshman year and from the Philippines, and I don't get what letters of recommendation are at all. When I look at the requirements for courses, I rarely ever see a requirement for a letter of recommendation. Are they really that much of a requirement if you ever plan on studying abroad? edit: apparently freshman and juniors are different from US and Philippines lol. Basically I'm in 9th Grade

A letter of recommendation is basically a letter where someone who is who is maybe a teacher or someone of an established background essentially gives their word vouching that you are deserving of a scholarship or deserve acceptance into a school typically you wanna get a letter of recommendation from people that relate to what your objective is so if you apply to a school of engineering get a letter of recommendation from yo physics teacher or an engineer teacher you have ya know
