I always get Rise Against and Against Me! mixed up when I just glance at titles, though I love them both I am partial to AM! I also always forget just how much they sound like Bad Religion and how it must’ve been weird to see them tour together. When it comes to reparations, most people who are seriously talking about it usually talk about it in two ways. The first, how Marianne Williamson pointed out that reparations are first and foremost an apology and that the material aspect of it is, like in an apology, the actions that solidify the apology as more than words. Secondly, and here I evoke people like Ta-Nehisi Coates, reparations have to provide the recipients with power. People that want to dismiss the concept of reparations only talk about it in terms of a check, in terms of money, because then those groups can be pushed aside, à la Native Americans on reservations-reminds me of a short story by Sherman Alexie called “The Only Traffic Signal On The Reservation Doesn’t Flash Red Anymore.” Coates has made the point of arguing that reparations ought to come in the form of property that can be used collateral or can be used as an investment, primarily home ownership. Thing is, if we could get more socialist policies, even soc dem policies like Bernie Sanders’ proposals, a lot of what is currently discussed as the material side of reparations becomes less and less impactful because we want those efforts and programs to be universal and apply across the board-they bring everyone up. Unfortunately, as long as we cling to capitalism reparations will always be a topic that needs to be addressed in some form or another. I am the kind of communist that believes housing should be a human right, I am not necessarily talking about making everyone own a home, apartment, or whatever kind of domicile that will constitute a legal “home,” or the opposite, that if you have bought a home you should have to forfeit it, (but in that case, I would want mortgages and money owed to be eliminated, like student debt.) Anyway, the point is that reparations cannot simply be the cutting of a check and people who argue for that aren’t serious about doing reparations in the first place. With all that said, I do think the term reparations-I do think Vin does recognize it, as well-doesn’t only mean that in the context of the song, but is used to a boarder end. Unfortunately, the term is loaded, and using it runs the risk of derailing whatever the real conversation is that you want to have-in this case poverty, wealth inequality, and capitalism.

I'm super happy you chose this song and not one of their super popular ones like Savior or Hero of War (whilst those too are great in their respective right). Tim Mcilrath, vocalist and 1/2 guitarists of Rise Against, is a powerhouse of lyrical poetry, so I'm very happy you chose a little lesser known song that still delivers great lyrics. Here are some more great choices from Rise Against that span their 20+ year career (from New to old): People Live Here (an acoustic song) This is Letting Go The Strength To Go One Elective Amnesia (bonus track) The Good Left Undone State of the Union Blood to Bleed Blood-red white & blue Everchanging (acoustic or not) Gethsemane (bonus track) They've been my favorite band for over 12 years so lm happy to see you very much enjoy them and hope you check them out more. Stay safe and great video!

Survivor Guilt has some of the most memorable lyrics. After all these years, it’s one of the few lines from Endgame I can cite at any given moment. “The cowards preach from pedestals, with words like ‘courage’ and ‘resolve,’ but what they meant was fuck em’ all, cause freedom isn’t free. They sent our daughters and our sons to deserts under burning suns, a sacrificial slaughtering to fill the pockets of the weak. An artificial enemy, are we so easily deceived?”

The whole "white privileges" discussion reminds of the situation between my country (Poland) and Germany: they invaded Poland, they ruined the whole country, they decimated our population, yet due to Yalta and Marshall Plan, Germany are so far ahead in economic development than Poland. But does it mean present Germans should feel guilty about this situation, should they be blamed for the sins of their grandfather? Of course not. One thing is to remember our history, the other is to take misdirected responsibility. Past is a past, now we can only put our efforts in order to nullify the disadvantage.
@gernwind9262
@gernwind9262 4 года назад
At the same time it's hard to define a cut-off point when it comes to the very real, material profiteering from actions of the past by people removed by generations from those actions. Here in Austria there exists the common myth of a "year zero", of a reset in 1945, when we had to re-build our country, our lives, our wealth from the ruins. Despite large parts of the core industry - often built and kept alive by slave labour during the war - having survived unharmed; depite the hydropower plants built by slave labour during the war giving us a strong foundation for the modernisation of the new Austria and the post-war economic boom. To this day we all benefit from these "sins of the past" in a very material way. Then there's the capital, the businesses big and small, the apartments and houses, left behind by the Jews we drove out of the country or deported to the camps. Few returned, the restitution process was a long one and made intentionally difficult for any applicant. Here too, in a very real sense, a lot of people, a lot of families benefitted from these crimes. So, where do you draw the line, the cut-off point for responsibility and guilt? Even if the benefit for a random individual today might be so marginal and tangential, that it makes no sense to burden that individual with any sort of specific guilt, I'd hope that a certain awareness of our connections to the past won't be swept aside too easily, an awareness that we're not simply in the clear just because we were born after the fact, remains in play.
@cdestey
@cdestey 4 года назад
It's not about "feeling guilty." It's about recognizing the disparity and understanding how the past affects the present. Nobody is asking you to take responsibility for anything.
@SimonH109
@SimonH109 4 года назад
@@cdestey Yep. Just ask someone, if my dad/granddad stole something from your family and handed it down to me when he died, does that mean your family has now lost all rights to it and I owe you nothing? I don't need to feel guilty for the act of theft but recognize that the act happen and I'm benefiting (and you're suffering)and something needs to be done for the wrong to be rightm

I work in healthcare, guys. I can't speak to whether or not it's a money thing with Walmart as they have a sordid history of mistreating employees, but I can say there is definitely a shortage of medical supplies including masks. 80% or so of all medical PPE is produced in Asia (Taiwan and Indonesia mostly) and these countries are no longer exporting anything due to the current situation. So it is possible that Walmart, which has thousands of employees, simply can't find the resources to equip them all, as most are going to healthcare workers and first responders.

Also, I'll say this about SJWs. They're young leftists, the left of the world and who have been fighting for these things for decades, can have nuance. The young left, meanwhile do not understand nuance yet, but they may get there. I give them credit on even understanding these concepts even partway as it takes some folks decades to realize these things when they're only just getting interested in politics. Notice that this bands been doin this for a while.

The interesting thing, is even if you were a fiscal conservative, and you only cared about production and profits, you should still support "government charity". There are two psychological principles to back this. Yerkes-Dodson law states that novelty work increases production until too many stress factors lower production. This effect has shown to slow down or speed up output by up to 12%. Meaning if you want people to be as productive as possible you should support the minimization of as many stress factors as possible. The second being Mazlow's hierarchy of needs. It is a pyramid ordered both by the stress they induce, and the order we default to prioritizing them. At the very bottom of that pyramid is physiological need - the most stressful thing is not having these met. When you don't have food, clothing, shelter, etc, you are stressed by default which damages your work output potential according to Yerkes-Dodson. By simply giving everyone all their basic necessities we'd actually increase workplace performance by up to 12%. If you really cared about functional capitalism you'd be a socialist.

Exactly. I was a bottom rung worker myself who couldn't even afford to eat most of the time. Let me tell you its hard to work a 13 hour shift on your feet when you haven't had a decent meal in three days. The number of times people just... Broke... They decide they have enough, throw their work to the ground, stomp on out, and then our manager making three times more than us by sitting in his office on his phone all day just orders us to work harder to make up for the lack of manpower. And not all of us are in a position to just quit. We barely can pay rent, let alone save. Quitting is a surefire way to be homeless. So we just... Work. Until we get lucky to find a chance to leave, or we keel over while slaving away.

There are different types of privilege that interact together (ie intersectionality). A born rich black person is likely better off than a born poor white person (class). But a born rich white person is likely better off than a born rich black person (race - this is the white privilege, everything else being equal except this metric). There's gender, sexuality, ableness (can't remember the proper word for this one), etc that play into it as well.
