I think the meaning of the song is that the father told his son a story of his mother and how she died. So he gets a flashback, the song, of how his mother tried tol leave his father because he did bad things. When the sons mother was killed by his father,she dropped a flag. Now, it's old. The flagis kept treasured and that's the storybof the world the father has faced. Now this is what the kid is pondering about. This is my opinion.

The lyrics are simply ... amazing !!! Many people love this song,but I find it's stupid because they even don't know the mean of the lyrics,they only judge at the melody .... whatever,nice story !!!
this song is just so powerful and emotional with the war happening atm so many men, women and children that are innocent and are suffering for what is going on I don't know why they are still fighting like in the song near the end. the women who ran with a white flag of surrender and they shoot someone who was trying to say she's innocent with most of the people who are dying.
@kennaem1 You're not listening very keenly young man. The sentiment of this song is that of a soldier who feels guilty for having to make hard choices. In point of fact, Soldiers kill in wartime, and if they are good people they feel guilty for killing. We praise them for doing at war what we condemn people for at peace... and to a veteran, that dissonance makes them feel unworthy of the honors we heap upon them. Doesn't mean they are unworthy, though. Just means they're good people.
@kennaem1 That's not what people are saying. We're saying that people veiw people as war heros, but the soldiers veiw themselves as murders l: Most do. Most don't consider themselves as "War Heros".
@SGTCloudrunner Sarcasm isn't the right term. Irony comes closer. This song doesn't mock soldiers, it tries to present their trials and tribulations in a form that a civilian can understand and respect.
@caffeinedelusions I'm a girl.... I'm not dissing the song, just all people who have ever commented on any kind of soldier/war related video or song saying they're murderers is just wrong.
For all our boys out in afghanistan doing their job, whether we agree with the political rhetoric or not .................................. When is all this going to stop ?
