I worked hard all my life until I got sick with kidney disease and ended up losing my job. I went through a hard time and ended up homeless. When I hear the lyrics "We Are The Angry and the desperate, the hungry and the cold" it literally uncontrollably brings tears to my eyes because I exactly know how that feels. As I'm sure many people have, I'm happy to say that I'm in a much better place now and have housing and I'm no longer on the street. During those Hard Times those songs like this that encourage me to keep fighting.
Wow dude that's horrible I'm so sorry that happened I'm so happy that you have a home now. You should definitely share your story and get it out there. Just always remember to keep going when life gets tough, ik I haven't experienced homelessness, I'm only 15, so I don't have room to act like it's easy to keep going when you're forced onto the streets and I won't because it's not, but I can say I've experienced multiple forms of depression and poverty, I have lived in a trailer my whole life and we're always fighting to make ends meet, and it's incredibly hard at times especially with today's economy, but remember to try to keep going and if you need to take a break, take a break otherwise you'll burnout and it'll be even harder to keep going. Life is shit but there's always gonna be a light at the end of the tunnel, you just gotta work hard to find it, and yes, sometimes you'll lose it and it might take years to find it again but I swear you will. I'm so happy for you and so proud that you were able to keep going and you managed to get off the streets. Life's hard, but as long as you have enough support and you keep pushing through you'll make it. I've tried to end my life many many times and have ended up in mental hospitals and while I'm still hanging on by a thread I'm still pushing through because I know people care about me. Just how I know people care about you, I care about you, I'm sure you'll make it, you'll always have my full support dude. I wish you the best of luck.
Also, may I ask, how long were you homeless for and how'd you get out of that situation? Also, how old were you at the time it happened? You don't have to answer any of my questions if you don't want to of course
People tend to forget, sometimes the music is what fuel you need, and sometimes as a lyricist, its the words that touch you. Its a fragile balance and honestly, rise against combines both. Lyrics that bite like rabid dogs and music that stings hard!
+nvshd That's a really insightful observation. Isn't it amazing how artists can use their voices not only as a musical instrument, but also a storytelling device to add emotion and meaning? that's one of the things I love about music.
Am I the only one who gets chills listening to this, especially when the chorus comes around? Idk, something about how it gets all fast makes my heart beat really fast
This song reminds me of people who left me when I stayed with them, but I know that hate won't achieve anything so I smile at them. And to me, this song is about keeping on going despite breaking down inside.
It's the same thing with me the people I looked down on and frowned towards I now smile and forgive them. I realized hate wouldn't get me anywhere but hurt especially because I couldn't let go of the person I was. I haven't dealt with anything as painful since I let go.
I saw them in concert when I was in 8th grade. Amazing concert and I still listen to them today. What is your favorite song by them? Its a tie between this one and Prayer of Refuge for me
I live in Greece, in the island of mytilini. There are hordes of boats of people from syria coming here every day. Just tiny plastic boats that have room for 10, but filled with 30. Every day boats sink. The volunteers save children, woman and men who ve lost everything. Every day the sea brings more and more bodies of drowned Syrian refugees that were trying to find a better tomorrow for their families.
I didn't hear anything of Rise Against yet, except this song which I found today. And I really like this song. Didn't listen to the other songs yet, any recommodations? :) EDIT: Guys, this comment is nearly 5 months old. I've heard enough songs. Thanks for giving me some recommodations, no need to reply anymore :D
In 2006 when I was 28 my then 13 year old sister played this all the time when I visited over there at my parents home was not familiar with this band but certain u can't help grow on .🎵🎵🎵
This is one of my favorite songs to listen to as I fall asleep. Wait, what do you mean I should be woken up by this? Oh, you must be mistaken, I was the baby that listened to Metallica instead of lullabies. Seriously, I'm not joking. I fall asleep while listening to Rise Against because I have Insomnia and only music like this has been helping.
Electric Flame Gaming check out the black dahlia murder album nocturnal. ive fallen asleep to that more than once, gorgoroths instinctus bestialus is also pretty good
This type of music is the best because it speaks about your true feelings and all the pop or rap music says most of the time is money, sex, power, and stupid love stuff as this does talk about love in the genre but it's the true feelings and I'm obsessed with this song
I'm homeless right now and I'm working my ass off to give my family a better life, when this is over I'm going to get political. people who go without should not suffer more than those who have plenty.
LYRICS: [Verse 1] Warm yourself by the fire, sonAnd the morning will come soonI’ll tell you stories of a better timeIn a place that we once knewBefore we packed our bagsAnd left all this behind us in the dustWe had a place that we could call homeAnd a life no one could touch [Chorus] Don’t hold me up nowI can stand my own groundI don’t need your help nowYou will let me down, down, down!Don’t hold me up nowI can stand my own groundI don’t need your help nowYou will let me down, down, down!Down! [Verse 2] We are the angry and the desperateThe hungry and the coldWe are the ones who kept quietAnd always did what we were toldBut we’ve been sweatingWhile you slept so calm in the safety of your homeWe’ve been pulling out the nailsThat hold up everything you’ve known [Chorus] Don’t hold me up now I can stand my own ground I don’t need your help now You will let me down, down, down! Don’t hold me up now I can stand my own ground I don’t need your help now You will let me down, down, down! [Bridge] So open your eyes, child Let’s be on our way Broken windows and ashes Are guiding the way Keep quiet no longer We’ll sing through the day Of the lives that we’ve lost And the lives we’ve reclaimed Go! [Chorus] Don’t hold me up now I can stand my own ground I don’t need your help now You will let me down, down, down! Don’t hold me up now I can stand my own ground I don’t need your help now You will let me down, down, down! Down! [Outro] Don’t hold me up! (I don’t need your help, I’ll stand my ground) Don’t hold me up! (I don’t need your help) No! No! No! Don’t hold me up! (I don’t need your help, I’ll stand my ground) Don’t hold me up! (I don’t need your help, I’ll stand my ground) Don’t let me down, down, down, down, down!
I love Rise Against just as much as the next person, and this song is one of my very favorites, but everybody has a different opinion. That's why we're humans and not Daleks. :)
+GravelsNotAFood I´verecently made a presentation of this so : Assad the dicatator ( officially its democracy ^^ ) has violently stopped a Protest --> people wanted change ( arabic spring (revolution wave in North Africa ) had a big influence and lead the people to stand up for their rights ) so the Rebels formed who fight assad . in 2014 The IS (islamic state ) was formed by Jihadists and extremists and cecceded from the Rebels (they fight the rebels and the Kurds which also ceceeded from the rebels ) then america started fighting the IS and in 2015 russia started to help assad. Oficcialy russia fights The IS but inoficially he fights the rebels ( trust me i get the news here in europe ) SO --> Refugees spreading all over europe ATM and all states are trying to manage that. The biggest problem i see is that there are many refugees who throw awaay things taht are given to them( which leads many people into thinking xenophobish ). I hope this was explaint well enough and i need to say that I am austrian (not australian ) so english isn´t my native langugeso if i did some shitty mistakes you gotta excuse me =)
yes. yes. let the hate flow through you.Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me
it reminds me of my book because it has to do with a long ago past, and losing lives and reclaiming others.and leaving every thing behind in the dust, and pulling out the nails supporting there enemies.
wow, Ok first off i am 14. second of all, you must have some life if you enjoy going and finding random kids less significant at grammar than you so you can trick yourself into thinking that you are better and more important than the rest of this world. god made you for reason. find a way to put it to good use. Isaiah Washburn
malachi talbott yeah I agree with you good story line but I have a concern what if this song is actually coming true? Look at the increase of the homeless people on the streets. But hell it's just a song for some but for the others it's life
I don't wanna be mean if I but in, but this is one of the best RU-vid fights I've ever seen, but the only thing is, we can't see how all of that started, so, if you don't mind mister Josh Staples (kinda sounds familiar to me, huh) how did all of this started, lol
I thought that people just shortened Rise Against The Machine to Rise Against. Then I suddenly realized it was another band. I looked their music up, found this video, and awesomeness filled my ears.
+Jacob Altman A few years ago, I found this on my brothers computer in a game called osu. I'm not a 'rock' person. but this song is actually real good.
We are the angry and the desperate, The hungry, and the cold, We are the ones who kept quiet, And always did what we were told. But we’ve been sweating while you slept so calm, In the safety of your home. We’ve been pulling out the nails that hold up Everything you’ve known. Don’t hold me up now, I can stand my own ground, I don’t need your help now, You will let me down, down, down!
There's probably some deep, psychoanalytic reason I hear "I can steal my own crown" instead of "I can stand my own ground" and I'm not sure I want to know it.
Emily Black Emily Black is not just u who hear that :D but honestly i hear same phrase in diferents ways like first time is "I can steal my own crown" when he says agains sounds like "I can stand my own ground" maybe we want to hear he say "I can steal my own crown"
Marcelo Henrique It sounds a bit more rebellious and badass. I can steal my own crown sounds like a rebellion for change while I can stand my own ground sounds like survival.
Emily Black Its a double entendre miss, happens a lot. sometimes on purpose sometimes unintentional, A lot of rappers do it, its saying something one way that can be heard or understood multiple ways, a little gem of poetry if you will, its not in the textbooks, at least it wasnt in my highschool haha.
This song is about running away from things or a person that you believe will only hurt you in the end. So you run before it's too late. "You can't let me down!" Prayer refugee. Perfect fucking song ever.
I saw the movie since then and I can't remember hearing it haha. I read the book before it was famous (Hipster ugh)and Rise Against has been my favorite bands since before then, plus this is my favorite mellow song (Blood Red, White, & Blue as my fave heavy song). Either way, this song never really stuck out in my head as part of the book heh.
I'm apache, I hope you criticized those white people who took my ancestors and punished them because they had Fucken guns. Real natives don't celebrate Columbus day! Anyways back to the song...
Real natives say, "fuck thanksgiving," too. Grandma was Lakota Sioux, I'm a quarter. We had family dinner, not Thanksgiving. I'm basically a counterfeit white guy, a term I heard on a Patrice O'Niel and Lious CK radio bit.
True, it does cause pain. But weakness? No. Even after every thing i use my heart to care about people who i may not know. That shows true strenght. Why? Empathy. that shows true character. how a person treats someone who other wise means nothing to them.
