The Normans didn't outnumber the Saxons. Both armies were about equal in size. However it is true that the Norman army was more versatile and less exhausted.
A lot less exhausted and you are right when you say the Normans never outnumbered the Saxons SOMEWHAT. Their armies were of similar size at the start of the battles. Battle of Stamford bridge had spend godwinsons forces
The Anglo saxons just took out the vikings 3 days befopre that and had to march to counter the Norman in vasion right after that anjd still put up an amazing fight hence why the Normans agreed to partner up at the end when they was victorious thats why its Anglo-Normans now
How very ironic. Where the Vikings failed to conquer England and subjugate the Anglo-Saxons, their descendants, the Normans albeit Christianized and not pagans, would succeed in this long battle.
@@silliestsususagest3276 Yes, they're mostly a Romance speaking people in their age and mostly Frenchized but developing a distinct culture in the process, we still cannot deny that they were descended from Rollo and his followers and other Scandinavians.
@@Torag55 actually most of the people living there were Franks at the time rollo and his crew only became the leaders of the area. So why the leadership, and hence to an extent the native subjects, were different from the rest of the French they still made up only 5% of the population and were mostly Frankish/French
Nice video and summery of the period but there is one major thing wrong. Harold Godwinson was by no means the rightful heir, he essentially crowned himself immediately after Edward the Confessors death (the day after i think) hoping to legitimise himself before a discussion about who the true heir was started. If this is a advert for the 1066 invasion DLC i hope they include Edwards neathew (who's name i forget) cause he was actually Edwards last living relative, the last of the House of Wessex and probably the most legitimate heir for the throne at the time
It also said that he was a descendant of Canute, but he wasn't. His claim came because one of Canute's son's supposedly promised him the throne if he died, and after Edward the confessor died, he saw his chance to act on this weak claim.
Its honestly just the English bias in the history, the idea of the "Norman yolk" or the idea that the french normans ruined england stems from English nationalism in the early modern era so many English today try to discredit Williams claim and promote Harold
@@robbiecotton6827 could be, but for me its just what ive read from wiki and online history websites tbh lol look up the Norman Yoke. I first started looking into it because i was surprised about how many English hate the normans haha
A more appropriate name for video would be The Last Days of The Anglo Saxons. Also I think the games time farm is really to short to represent the Germanic migrations in to Britannia .
I don't think Attila could do justice to that time the best place to go are mods for Total war Rome 1 barbarian invasion as in Attila the Romano British are just Western Roman Empire Copy Past witch the Romano British where not as they did not have the legions .
I had great fun playing as Guthrum. While Wessex does appeal to me in the lore, they just felt a little boring. Some time i'll definitely come back at some point to conquer the British Isles as the Welsh.
In fairness, the battle of Eddington hardly ended 'viking' aggression in the British Isles, it just defeated the threat to Wessex, the last Anglo-Saxon kingdom for a time. The later Danish conquest by Canute, which is mostly skipped over here, is a clear later example of Danish conquest of most of what was considered 'England'. The Northern Kings of Alba and Strathclyde and the Welsh princes ( not to mention the Irish kings) continued to face fight against Norse and Danish invasions in this period. Just because England has better records of the period doesn't mean we shouldn't be careful of building Anglo-centric narrative
Please CA can you implement annexing your client states or give us more options for interacting with client states. I would like to take their land without declaring war on my loyalest allies. Even make it so we incorporate their royal line into ours or something like that, imagine changing dynasties because of choosing to annex.
it's a shame this was a flop, i began to become more suspicious the more that the hype train got rolling and the advertisements were EVERYWHERE, a misspending of funds it seems.
I think Warhammer exaggerates the impact of a cavalry charges with people flying 10-20 feet away in the air. Then again what does a real Cavalry Charge look like in Real Life.
Warhammer cavalry Charge is Fantasy Garbage. Sorry, but the Combat Engine in ToB is very, very good. ToB is an excellent Attila Mod, but it could be so much more ....
Lol, sales for total war: britannia not going so well in the middle of everyrhing? xD almost seem like you had forotten about it a little,I certainly had. Nice vid though, I like stuff like this, as well as zombie pirates singing sea-shanties ;D
Need Norman dlc, need to play as my many times grandfather William the Conqueror.... Fear factor needs to be a thing. William is related to Alfred so why pole cry over Norman invasion... Were not that bad. XD
I find it fun and like the new mechanics of the game plus the game sold really well according to steam and there made a profit so what make you think this apart from your own feelings on the gamr
@@davidlox1164 Thrones of britannia could be amazing. But it lacks of Content and Features. The Loyalty System need a lot of work to be really good. Yes many TW Fans bought this Game , because they want a real new Medieval TW Game . With more updates and features the Fans will like this Game - but when do you get these improvements or will we be sold any improvement as DLC ? For example we get a DLC Agent or Mercenary Update. Yes also in this Age there were also assassins and mercenaries 😀
Stopped buying your "historical" titles after Rome 2 after having playing everything since Shogun 1. You need to change your business model. Reskin DLCs, and full games is not ok.
I love how the Anglo-Saxons came over to the British Isles as conquerors, then became christianised, then were in turn invaded by more pagan warriors from pretty much the same place they had originated, in what can only be described as a second wave, only to eventually reconquer it all, only to lose it once again to Cnut, only to regain it, only to lose it again to the Normans. The Anglo-Saxons were certainly warriors, who never gave up.
I would argue that unlike normans, saxons or danes Cnut did not upend the social order or government. He just became the king of england. It was still the same anglo-saxon kingdom now only with a foreign king.
Do your generals still turn against you every other turn? Edit: TIL I'm just really bad and there's nothing absolutely wrong with the game. Damn you steam reviews.
Thrones of britannia is bad at the Moment. If CA put more Features in the Game - spies, saboteurs, army Tradition, more building slot, more interessting Cities, more characters with REAL impact to the Game and so on. THEN it could be a real TW Game. But i dont believe that this will happen .
Merun Dagon too great of an opportunity for ca to pass up, imo they wanted to do something like thrones for a while and had plans for making a 1066 campaign
@Matthew Carney yes it is not so bad as before , but is FAR away from a real TW Game. Thrones of britannia has a lot potential. But you must use all FEATURES for a good Total War. Thrones of britannia need Much more Fearures : Mercenarys, agents, army traditions, more building slot in Cities and perhaps bit more. Thrones of Britannia is not Really a bad game, but Now it is a bad Total War. If Ca release a FREE DLC with agents, hireable soldier armies and a bit more then Thrones of britannia could be amazing .... But Sega will sell us this Features .. And that is a Shame for CA.
I find the Thrones campaign rather innovative. To play optimally you can't just blob out to the horizon. For once it is actually worth it to gather loyal allies and vassal kingdoms to keep your corruption down and your lands secure. I do detest the flimsy nature of cavalry when compared to warhammer though.
No , not the best . The music is very good . The Game Design is a very good base, but CA must optimize a lot. Thrones of Britannia is a Good base - but not more.
what are you talking about? thrones of britannia is one of the best total war games in terms of features, it just gets old very fast because of the small map
It isn't entirely sure whether the Norman forces fled out of panic, or were feigning a retreat, but the speech by William seems like something straight out of Hollywood.
Hadrian Jarilovic given how toxic and entitled some (not all by any means but a very loud section) “fans” were, I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up abandoning the project. I really hope they don’t but with the determined review bombing and other absurd actions taken by these “fans” (before the game had even been released mind you) it wouldn’t surprise me.
@@alternativebassist thats a shame. I think it was a fun title. Most of todays "fans" arent the old fans that played original rome or TW medieval 1 and 2. New age punks
I dunno to me it seems weird to add DLCs to a Saga game, since it's not meant to be a full Total War Game. But I haven't played it yet, might pick it up on a sale someday, just seems half great of a game since it has some new great mechanics while skipped over some from all the other older games.
"The Normans were viking tribes". Lmfao no. They were descendants of some nordic tribes who intermingled with Franks. By that time, they had fully adopted Frankish costumes, languages, laws and whatnot. Calling them Nordic (not even vikings, since that's an inappropriate term) is like calling modern US citizens "British". Or modern Mexicans "Spanish".
It doesn't matter who they descend from. They are their own people now. Retaining very little, if anything, in common with old ancestors who mixed together. Not only genetically, but culturally, they are completely dissimilar. So were the Normans compared to "Germanic" people (vague term) or Nordic folks. Infact Normans deeply disliked "vikings", as they were often at war with them. And they had absolutely no similarity to any population living in what is now modern Germany. And, boy, there indeed IS such a thing as an American. Denying it is just daft. You are the kind of person who would call a british person of black color "African" after one of his ancestors moved from there 200 years ago. Simply ludicrous.
@@uncazzodinickbuonono not strictly true Alfred's common law is the basis of all english speaking nations and William forbade slavery in 1077 which is why despite adopting slavery from the Arabs and Portuguese it was Britain who were the first in history to eventually seek to eradicate slavery all products of the add mixture of cultures from Norse Saxon and Norman culture mixed with some good old Christianity.
I would *LOVE* to see an Age of Arthur DLC. Options to play as Invading Saxons/Angles/Jutes, the native Britons and Picts, and of course the Irish factions, maybe the Uí Néill, Eóghanachta and Dál Riata 😊😊
God knows Harold should have won. The Cavalry charge in LoTR RoTK, the Rohirrim in general denoted Tolkien's hope that if the Saxons had greater cavalry they could have won. The Rohirrim also denote Theoderic the Great (Theoden in particular) of the Ostrogoths and Gondor represents West Rome in their fight against the Anti-Christ Attila. Harold- good game champ, will see you in the afterlife! And William, you magnificent bastard- to the victor the spoils! Cant wait for CA to make a FLC/DLC for this
@@codybonds That he was. And now his watch has ended. I always admired Harold you know. The guy fought and fought and fought. He was like Cesare Borgia. He was simply a victim of fate. As I said... To the victor the spoils. Kinda reminds me of the taste of wine. Bittersweet and contemplative.
@@anirbanbhattacharya9185 The fact Harold lost was a good thing for the British. Harold was one of their greatest ever enemies, killing large numbers of people during his campaign against Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. If Harold had lived perhaps the British might have been wiped out all together.
@@raprice79 Oh ok I did not know this. I assume you mean the Welsh people instead of the Anglo-Saxons? Because typically the Welsh represent the Old/actual/Celtic+Roman inhabitants of the British people. Typically Arthur's folk.
That Cikanauskaja and never ending Krymea conflict, because google maps does not show correct country who it belongs. Because there aren't geopolitical map. Marukai lives near this mountain as a nomads tribe. Likely to be Warcraft Pandaria Mogu clash.
I know that this has nothing to do but it would be good to see a total war about the Aztecs, they were a great war empire, imagine seeing them fight at stake, and the new mechanics that there would be, as sacrifices
1066 Hasting battle Yeah ! But why do you English people tell you all the time William of Nomandie while his name is Guillaume Le Batard Duke of Normand and later Guilaume conquered him. It disturbs you to admit that the founder of the Plantagenets was of Franco-Viking origin. Or are you being taught another version of the story? can you give me explication please ?
