The Kingdom of Dahomey is one of the notable kingdoms that existed in Africa. It was located in present day Benin republic.
It came into being at about 1600 and lasted till 1894 when the last king of the kigdom Behanzin was overcome by the French.
The Kingdom of Dahomey was a regional power that boasted of a well-organized domestic economy built on conquest and slave labor, a centralized administration and efficient taxation system.

Produced by yt wmn . It's fiction why would you watch it when those are the people that enslaved your ancestors. Why would you watch that film when some white woman has literally made Africa into one country when it is clearly not no disrespect. Campaign against this film being it's disrespectful to black people the descendants of Slaves.

Other historians have reported that the sacrifices were due to the inability to feed all the captured that were intended for slavery. So instead of watching them starve to death, they murdered the ones they couldn't move fast enough.

at least from what i heard they said that initially they sell slaves in bulk and parking slaves in a coastal town ( in the Balkans) is gonna run your food stocks dry really quick so in order to save on cash and well not starve they started killing dudes as a " humane" option instead of letting the slaves starve to death. They used the excuse of some sort of ritual killing to give a spiritual justification to the mass killings then it just became part of their greater human sacrifice stuff and became tradition.

Why not just let them go? And recapture them later.
@gabrielnguyen5580
@gabrielnguyen5580 Год назад
i mean if an african trader shows up to a foreign coastal town and just lets all the slaves go that would not reflect well on them - in the cases of slaves being at home on their own ports its not like the traders can just incense the local lords and let slaves(usually from enemy tribes mind you) just roam about.

West Africa is (I guess "was" is better for this argument) pretty resource poor, and lacking good transportation methods - ie dense jungle, unpredictable weather, not many navigable rivers. Compare this with other countries across the globe who had resources like spices, lumber, precious metals, textiles...unfortunately this was not the case with West Africa. Their greatest resource was humans. People don't like to hear this but that's just the reality of the past. Geography plays a HUGE role in how societies develop and it wasn't necessarily easy living on the west coast of Africa 200/300 years ago so you're going to end up with a more "barbaric" society. This is more than likely why you see human sacrifice. Human sacrifice is most common in stressed environments like this, it's actually pretty fascinating to research.
@desmondkong7581
@desmondkong7581 2 года назад
@@Sideshowmanatee interesting concept. Regions in West Africa which included Mali and Timbuktu were very well structured and educated back in 1235 CE. Are you referring to further back or regions around those areas? I do know the Dahomaey practiced sacrifice and also slave trade but can't really say all West Africa location were barbaric. Would love to know more on your view an research?

They didn't sell other "black" people. They traded and sold other "People," to other "People" from Portugal who were in the business of trading/selling people into slavery, as these people were viewed by some to be an economic commodity. I don't know what their religious affiliations or beliefs were. I know there were some "Christians" involved,I'd imagine practicioners of Judaism were involved too. However what does it matter what religion those involved were if their going to trade you like a commodity, treat you like chattel property, and strip you of your humanity?

Not only did they sell slaves, they fought against the British, you know white people, too continue selling slaves. The British wanted to end slavery, and the Dahomey wanted to keep selling slaves. The woman king is like having Jews make a movie about how great the Nazis are. Or it would be like having a civil war movie where the south fought to end slavery, and Robert e Lee would be the Protagonist.

Empire or KIngdm? i dont think Dahomey, Ashanti and Benin was empire like Russia, Ottoman, British, Spanish empire, other small empire in Asia like Majapahit(Indonesia-Malaysia today), Khmer Empire(Cambodia, South Vietnam, Loas and Thailand today) are true Empire, they are small kingdom in Indonesia size like Dahomey, Benin they are not empire, except Mali today in Mali and Senegal are empire
@Niani23455
@Niani23455 2 года назад
Empires are not defined by size. According to dictionaries such as Cambridge, Empires are formed when a state absorbs more than one nation through coercion or otherwise. The Ashanti Empire for instance conquered and absorbed over 40 states between Ghana, Togo and Ivory Coast.
@DeathSithe92
@DeathSithe92 2 года назад
@@Niani23455 actually empires ARE, Dahomey was a SMALL kingdom based upon slave trading as a mainstay of its "Economy" anything less more and your just making stuff up
@Niani23455
@Niani23455 2 года назад
@@DeathSithe92 Cambridge, Marriam Webster and many Encyclopedias confirm what I just wrote. It's not about size but the number of states absorbed into a central authority. Ashanti was an Empire because it conquered different states between modern day three countries. Dahomey was once an Empire because they conquered other states until they were conquered in turn by Oyo and lost all their possessions. Benin is not an Empire because it was simply an ethnic state that did not embark on expansionism.
