The sons of Herakles, the citizens of Sparta are the finest infantry in the ancient world. Every aspect of Spartan life and society is geared towards warfare, their helots enable the citizens to pursue warrior perfection in the agoge and Krypteria. Although neither Phillip II nor his son Alexander the Great conquered Sparta itself, the Spartans were nevertheless eventually forced to yield to the League of Corinth. With the Greek world in turmoil following Alexander’s, they are once more free to reclaim their former glory, leading Greece and the world beyond. Greek States
The world-renowned culture of the Greeks was built upon hard toil, keen thinking, and military excellence. The Agiad Dynasty the two hereditary kings of Sparta, from the Agiad and Eurypontid families, claim descent from Herakles. They are completely equal in authority and power.

I'm a bit late here, but the symbol on the shield is a lambda. It's the Greek equivalent to the letter "L." They had L on their shields because people did not refer to Sparta by the city's name in ancient times. They referred to it as Laconia. It is only in recent modernity that the polity became synonymous with the city of Sparta. An equivalent example in modern times is if everyone suddenly started referring to the United States as Washington until Washington stuck.

U are pretty much right except the Λ standed for lacedaemon (feminine) which is the area of laconia .....a spartan would be called lacedaemon (masculine) but lacedaemonios was more common

Another fun-fact -- what you see on those shields is the upper-case lambda. The lower-case lambda is the symbol of the Half-Life games.

Btw the letter on the shield is not a capital A but a capital Λ in Greek vocab representing their name Lακεδαιμόνιοι (Lacedaemonians). Sparta was the region name like Athens but they were called Lacedaemonians ^-^

Koinon ton Aitolon means "Aetolian League" in Greek. They existed between 4th century BC-188 BC and were in opposition to to Macedon and the Achaean League (the peninsula of Sparta).

Fun fact! Ares is in fact NOT THE God of War, there are 2 he and his sister are both God's of their own respected aspect of war, ares being the God of combat and murder Athena being the Godess of strategies and tactics.

I once had a spy fail 13 times in a row. I was seriously pissed. The first 13 turns of my campaign and I couldn't do fuck-all with one of my agents. Started as Macedon, went to get Epirus before Sparta got there, we ended up teaming up on their army but Sparta went to the coast to turn into a navy to chase the remaining Epirotes down so I had the city to myself. Spy failed FOUR times. Whatever, I guess. Then I went for Larissa, again my spy failed four more times while I sat at the border for two of those turns to recoup some losses, but I handled it anyway. Athens, three more times. What do I pay you for besides medical bills, you cross-eyed ninja? And the last two were Sparta themselves, and by this point I was well past being surprised and just more and more disappointed. I wonder what the actual odds of that are, or if the Universe says my using Spies goes against the celestial will.

Jesus, you really like treating your cavalry like expendable early skirmishers. To the point you don't have numbers to charge the flanks when melee infantry engage. Use the directional buttons of your keyboard to move your infantry line without dissolving the neat formation, it's a neat little trick. I know the fact that you're doing it for RU-vid, you're not gonna slow motion or pause to micromanage and this hurts your battle effectiveness. Beyond 8 or 10 units each side it turns into micromanaging hell. Anyhow, my take with hoplite warfare would be pin their infantry in melee as soon as possible with my own hoplites playing defensive. Move lighter infantry around and charge the flanks or the back of their line. If you use cavalry to charge the flanks, be cautious with spearman. By the time they turn to face you, you should be getting out and preparing another charge. I only leave my cavalry engaged with missile or sometimes sword infantry when it's needed. Also, try to make your priority to dismantle enemy cavalry early as they are a pain. Skirmisher enemy cavalry is annoying.

I've watched your campaigns a lot. I think you should play on hard or vh, cuz you stomp the AI too easily. Like by the 260 BC you own half of the map xD

The problem is dei is balanced for normal not hard or vh. Often campaigns can be ruined by the ai. It's a difficult conundrum.
