Port has some similarities to Standstill in that it slows the game down but can provide an advantage for a player who is already ahead on board while not being as punishing as something like Armageddon. It is definitely a problem once you realize that "Port your Port" becomes the default play when everyone is playing it. I'd love to see a Recurring Insights on the card Standstill actually.

After Patrick's rant about Teferi's Response basically saying "screw you Rishadan Port" I explained Valentin, Dean of the Vein to my gf as a card with a lot of text that amounts to "screw you, Cauldron Familiar"

I ran a Rishadan Port on my land destruction deck. It was great 2nd turn to shut down any early weenies. It was a godsend vs. counterspell heavy decks or a green creature deck. You can even effectively tap 2 lands (leave it unused on your turn, tap during their turn, then on your turn tap another land) to make sure they don't have mana for counterspell if you need your spell to go through. I crapped on expensive lands with it just to spite rich kids and their rainbow decks with elaborate combos with expensive cards. Landy was so fun until WOTC said nope you need to build expensive elaborate decks now instead of thinking outside the box and coming up with a deck that craps on expensive decks.

I’d like an analysis on why deathrite shaman was a problem while noble hierarch is nice

+1, DRS would be a great card for this series.

Shaman provides WUBRG mana. Noble, just WUG. Shaman provides damage straight to the face. Noble provides half of the damage Shaman does *and* is restricted to unblocked creatures. Shaman provides a level of resilience against aggro via lifegain. Noble, nothing. Shaman provides main deck graveyard hate. Noble, nothing. Shaman is a mana dork, wincon, etc for Thoughtseize decks. Noble, acceleration for creature decks...

One mana planeswalkers that can't be attacked is too powerful. Mana dorks for non-green decks is too powerful.
@alexjackson7929
@alexjackson7929 3 года назад
The most fundamental tension of Magic is that some cards in your deck are mana sources and the rest are action/business/"gas", and if you draw too many of either category and not enough of the other then you can't take game actions. By circumventing this tension, cards that are both mana sources and gas are inherently very powerful--think of how creature lands become metagame-defining Standard staples every time they get printed. Noble Hierarch is only "gas" in the barest minimum sense--exalted is better than the 1 power of a Llanowar Elf, but it's still just 1 point of power. Deathrite Shaman on the other hand does a *lot* of non-mana things--it's a clock, it's lifegain, and it's main deck graveyard interaction (a category of interaction which usually requires narrow sideboard cards) Shaman also synergizes with both sacrifice lands (fetchlands and Wasteland) and cantrips (every Brainstorm in your yard is 2 points of face burn), and those are already the two most powerful categories of cards in Legacy. On top of everything else, it's the best "Llanowar Elf" ever printed for formats with a critical mass of good sacrifice lands and it doesn't even require green mana to cast.
@cheefjeef2437
@cheefjeef2437 3 года назад
Shaman also costs G or B. I think at just G, it would still be powerful but much less egregious. Giving decks that lean on swamps a turn 1 elf with upside distorts the typical restraints we see on elves

Cheekily reposting my asks from video #1 - Undercity Informer (I think it's an all-time classic for limited, although it only has problems in constructed), Life from the Loam, Dark Confidant, Devastating Dreams (and that whole cycle), Spider Spawning, Sylvan Library, Feed the Swarm, Frantic Search, Memory Lapse, Recurring Nightmare, Satyr Wayfinder, and (even though I know what you're going to say from watching Legacy broadcasts!) Wasteland. I would watch the hell out of any of those!

Maybe some thoughts on primeval titan or the titan cycle. Looking at how designs might seem medium on printing and then grow into a much stronger card over time

That point about being more powerful against already fringe playstyles is really interesting, especially when thinking about how a format like legacy came to be the way it is.

I would like to hear your thoughts on Thragtusk. It was such a house in its standard, but that may have been a result of the support for it during the time.

I found your revised activation cost interesting because Icy Manipulator had the ability to do what Rishadan Port did but of course it cost 4 mana to get on the board first and could be interacted with more easily since it was an artifact, as well as not producing a mana. Could you ever see a world where we had mana that had a cost associated with playing it other than sacrificing another land like some lands do? I wonder if Port would have been OK if you had to sac it if you did not pay X mana when it came into play. I know that is clunky and the fact that it is a trigger could be problematic too so would be interesting to have lands that you paid mana for and put into play as a special action.

I started in Mercadia but did not really get into Magic competitively until Apocalypse and even then just block constructed and draft. Even though I have heard Rishidan Port is miserable to play against I wish I could go back and experience it just so I had a better feel for discussions that come up around it. I am sure I could go play legacy to learn about it but they have always had Wasteland. I have a feeling playing against this in block with Dustbowl was a lot different than playing against this in Legacy at the time.
