With polls showing a 26 point lead for Labour, Conservative MPs are "almost hysterical", reports Andrew Marr. Jeremy Hunt failed to move the dial with his Spring budget, so tories are looking for other issues on which to campaign.
After the election of George Galloway to the House of Commons in the Rochdale by-election, Rishi Sunak made an unusual intervention to speak out against "extremism".
In this video Andrew Marr explains why the conservatives seem determined to make the British response to the war in Gaza - and Islamism along with it - a wedge issue ahead of the coming UK general election. He explains why Keir Starmer must speak out against these tactics.

I completely agree with you John. My wife & I left the UK 13 years ago. Immediately after the results of the referendum in 2016, one of my wife’s colleagues referring to it, said “Que paso?” / “What’s happened?”. … .. . The disUnited Kingdom is a very divided society & particularly now after 14 years of a politically & morally corrupt government, it has to be changed.

While I agree with that, my lived experience is that the rump have got louder but generally people are very tolerant. I know personal circles vary but I can’t pretend the people I’m around are hate filled. They’ve certainly improved as well.

I also left the UK 14 years ago. Friends asked me: What if it doesn't work out? In hindsight, I could have asked them the same question. The rise of extreme right opinions, and that includes many of Rishi Sunak's notions, has destroyed the UK.

Sadly not all are like you and you must speak out against those who are not. We not only see terror attacks and grooming gangs but we do see submission of women. If you are quiet and peaceful that is good but please make your voice heard to condemn those who are not. I'm not convinced it is divisive. From what I hear, most British Muslims are also opposed to (but scared of) Islamists. If we can all unite in defending religious freedom whilst condemning theocracy. I think that will help social cohesion. Whereas if we try to shut down discussion of legitimate concerns. I think that just hands ammunition to the far right, and creates further religious division.

To take a clear position in the middle ground is probably what's best for the country, but might be a more dangerous move since that opens up an angle of attack. Let's hope Keir Starmer has the courage to tackle the issue in a serious, non-divisive manner.

We are in the establishment’s Labour-Tory; both parties are the exact same experiment. It doesn’t matter if you’re Muslim or Christian or anything else, White or Ethnic, Man or Woman. People would do good to remember that the Modern State first colonised it’s own people and it’s own territories, and erased its own native diversity and varied heritage, and enacted violent deprivations and removed the means for people to mobilise and invest in themselves. This violence was not enacted from “outside” or by migrants. If you’re sick and tired, and your efforts aren’t having the payoff that should be reasonable: 1) break out of the Labour-Tory and make the choice not to be a guinea pig in this experiment. 2) educate and inform yourself through a little study. Read Professor Graeme Gill’s “The Nature & Development of the Modern State” (2004)

@user-nj1qu1cs7s Starmer is IMHO, a decent man. He's in the envidious position of having to pander to floating voters that will get Labour over the line. It's been recognised that this relatively small group tends to be quite socially conservative. Hence, when Labour are perceived as been a bit 'wacky' by this grouping ......they don't win elections . This certainly happened in 1983 with Michael Foot and of course Jeremy Corbyn.

no way he'll do that. I think looking to politicians for leadership is deeply flawed, they're followers. The leadership must come from us. It is time to separate people from the religion and support the vast majority who are like everyone else, even if they are religious and most are not. We do not make the country better by picking on people. And we do not persuade people our way is better if we're unpleasant and unhappy. And if we keep letting politicians off from all their failings because they picked on people whose beliefs we don't fully share (at least on a surface level) then we're the fools. And we're the losers

Fair enough but ignores the elephant in the room. None of this will see a sensible outcome whilst politicians permit high volumes of immigration. Small volumes of people with differing cultural backgrounds willing to integrate would be well tolerated. High volumes will not and the spillover will be what you wish to avoid. Starmer should stand up and say clearly what he will do about controlling immigration. The so called "islamist" wedge will then disappear.

ANDREW - thank you for saying all this. You are so right that this is a pivotal moment for Britain and I think other European democracies. I fear though that the Tories will try the tactic - they have nothing else, frankly. Also there are many of their party members (not Tory voters) who think like Lee Anderson or worse. I think Keir Starmer could seize leadership on this and if would make him a great person in our history before he even gave Labour victory. It would go well with his style, passions and style of speaking. However, I fear that the consensus at the top of the Party will be to keep well out of the way. That would be a great mistake but I think it would be understandable. I have another suggestion - Theresa May particularly as she is now leaving parliament. I believe that she is a fundamentally decent person; someone who can speak with conviction and represents a very different spirit in the Conservative Party which could speak out. Also, whilst not entirely her own doing, her premiership was very disappointing and her legacy will not be great. If she spoke out robustly, I think history would be much kinder to her. Of course if she were to denounce the trends in her own party and Keir Starmer was to say that we are not prepared to engage in his contest with this sort of loathsome sentiments, we might have a chance to see our country rise above this menace. Again - thank you for saying all this - I am an enthusiastic "Marrite' but this was at a higher level.

A voice of reason. You caught it up immensely well. Distinguishing between “Theological critique and human lives lived” sums it up really well. Islam, Muslims and Islamophibia. Judaism, Jews and Jewsphobia. The thing about Jews is that not all Jews believe in Judaism and it is not straight forward to differentiate between the two. Someone can be a Jews and not believe in Judaism and someone can convert to Judaism and become Jews. The last century had a phrase termed “The Jews problem” and it seems the meaning of it is changing from the Jews having problems to the Jews making problems and that’s not to say all the Jews. The term antisemitism is quite confusing because it is also used against Semitic people. Refreshing hearing your perspective.

Well, Labour shouldn't get involved too strongly in this toxic issue. If it takes sides it will cause a greater rift among it's core ethnic supporters. The focus should be on traditional election issues. However, I feel that Labour will be drawn in and could dig itself a hole which may be difficult to get out of. Just look at how similar cultural values are between Catholic and Protestant countries and how different they are to Muslim countries. Women’s rights, gay rights, freedom of speech, blasphemy laws, to name a few.

The difficulties to assimilate Islamism due to cultural differences are much stronger than they ever were for Catholicism. It’s up to each country to decide whether those differences are irreconcilable or not. People shouldn’t have those decisions forced onto them under the penalty of being called xenophobes if they prioritize another set of values.
