Hi! I’m excited to be here in your channel and I’m interested in learning more about investing and saving up for my retirement but am a little confused about the whole process. Any advice or tips to get me started up would be greatly appreciated.

Retirement is now more difficult than it was in the past. I've been saving for a long time instead of investing, and right now I only have about $400K. considering all the inflation, i'm thinking of investing in stocks, i dont just have idea on market strategies.
@RebeccaGilpin
@RebeccaGilpin 10 дней назад
The increasing prices have impacted my plan to retire at 62, work part-time, and save for the future. I'm concerned about whether those who navigated the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am currently experiencing. The combination of stock market volatility and a decrease in income is causing anxiety about whether I'll have sufficient funds for retirement.

This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800k

I have a question. If these rich people sit on their assets and don't sell in order to avoid paying tax, then to what extent can we say that that's passive income? For it to be income it has to be converted into money, right, whereby they can put that money in the bank at 5 % and make some dosh. If the asset is just sitting on their books, does it really matter how much it goes up by in market value? So long as it has not been sold, it's merely a chimera of wealth, no? It has no substance. Just an abstraction. Or am I missing something? How do they make money on these assets if they don't sell them? Thanks a lot. Very interesting video.

I don't think taxing the rich is the answer to this. That merely moves the corruptive power & influence from "the rich" to the bureaucratic "political elite," meaning the outcome is remarkably similar. I think it's much better to prevent either side taking hold of too much power or resources.

Gary is absolutely correct, but there comes te human factor: Catarina de Medici was very jealous of her husband (and used clairvoyants etc), and while she was fully on board with her family's interest, she also acted for her idea of France and protected her sons. Likewise, Rishi has found himself to be unable to withstand the stress of the position of PM. I think he is damaged goods, not that I feel any pity, but I expect some unravelling.

Yep. The conservative parties all over the world made this very clear. When the left asked for higher taxes on the wealthy, the loopholes for the upper 10000 stayed in place, but the taxes rose for the middle class. That's why I was for a very long time very hard against higher taxes - because I know I can't afford higher taxes without changing my way of living. But we need higher taxes for the upper 10000. They are the black holes of society. They have so much wealth that it won't be lost.

Here's what I think the solution to inequality and falling living standards is; 1. Tax Wealth NOT Work. 2. Fix private the public services, that siphon Taxes into the hands of the wealthy via profits, whilst not delivering services / decent wages. 3. Proportional voting system - to ensure we can choose to vote outside the corrupt parties and people like Gary could run for PM. 4. Transparency on funding for political think tanks and political donations - politicians should have to wear their sponsors like F1 drivers, on their suits. 5. Better national metrics everyone uses to measure the success of our politicians - we need to measure the end goals - Health, Happiness, Vertical mobility, and cut our fixation on the economy and growth (which are simply a means to an end, not the end). Would love to know what people think / if there are any big holes here.
@CuriousCrow-mp4cx

It's a good start, but we the people have to change too. Voltaire said "People will cease to commit atrocities only when they cease to believe absurdities." And over nearly the last 5 decades we have committed several atrocities on ourselves and others, because our priorities - individually and collectively - are misplaced. All priorities bring problems, but if you end up resenting dealing with those problems your priorities bought with them, that's a sign you've got the wrong priorities. And resentment driving our politics now. And that resentment leads us to cling to blame, which changes nothing, instead of being accountable. Not only should our politicians be accountable to us, but we need to be accountable for how we contributed to our issues. We're more divided and isolated from each other and the world around us because we haven't been honest with ourselves. Yes the plutocrats and their bought politicians deceived us, but we wanted to be deceived. We wanted not to think about the consequences of policies executed by politicians we voted for that were not only counter-productive, but corrosive, harmful, and pointlessly cruel. People stood by as different groups wet made scapegoat of the week, not realising that was a beast that would eventually consume them. The poor, the sick, and the disabled, and the elderly were thrown under the bus. Then the working class, and now the middle class are now going under, all because plutocrats want more assets, and their banks and corporations they own want more profits. And they resent anyone who stands in their way of those goals. Time to be honest with ourselves, or nothing can get better. Time to accept that the plutocrats see everyone but themselves as a means to an end. And if we keep on pretending that isn't true, things will only get worse. If we want to keep the pros of capitalism, we have to take responsibility for its cons, and it's conmen that come with it. They depend on Society being organised and well-run enough to clean up after the messes they leave as they make their wealth. Well, There's a price for that and that is taxation, entailing redistribution of wealth when capitalism and its markets fail to adequately distribute assets, services, and commodities that are needed by everyone. We need to stop running our economies as if they were branches of Red Lobster, where the plutocrats consume numerous portions of fare, and leave little for the needs of those making it possible for them to eat as much as they can.

@@CuriousCrow-mp4cx thank you for such an eloquent and thoughtful reply. Love the Voltaire quote. Any thoughts on things like democratic socialism e.g Allende /Chilean Socialism etc? For me the way we fix corruption is through democratic and de-centralised planning. Though it seems like we need some stepping stones to get there, which is why I think, as Gary once suggested, fix the system's problem (distribution in Capitalism) is easier than parachuting a new system (as that requires people to change minds = slow). So for me it's about stepping stones. I'd love you to prove me wrong though / share any thoughts on how we can have a more equal, resilient democratic system that serves and improves the lives of the majority. Thanks again for sharing.

So if you have £6,300 in a savings account, £6,000 of it will be ignored and the other £300 will be treated as giving you a monthly income of £8.70.” A *monthly* income of £4.35 on each £250! Dear Gary While I completely agree with the message however I don't think you have researched Mrs Sunak and her family. Narayana Murthy Mr Sunak's father in law the founder of Infosys is a very respected man in India because he made his wealth honestly. From an ordinary man he became a billionaire by his shear intellect and hard work. He is no Sorros. And if he was one he would have sought influence in US not in UK. Also his wealth is based on the valuation of Infosys so his real income can be calculated by looking at Infosys profits and dividend. I think you have done a disservice to your essential message by involving Mrs Sunak and Mr Murthy.

Should be a deemed rate of income on assets that gets taxed, no deductions. And assets controlled via tax haven entities - that give the impression of no legal control - should be deemed assets for those purposes. I used to work as a lawyer with PwC and i know these games very well.. Youve got sunak right but you missed one thing. England has an historical apartheid between the anglo-saxon working class and the franco-norman ruling class. Sunak has never been part of the anglo-saxon working class. Thank you for everything you do to educate the masses on wealth and inequality Gary, you are a godsend.❤ Just to add: I find the whole thing of wealth inequality fascinating and infuriating by turns. I yearn for a change in this setup. It doesn't help that everytime someone says "tax the rich" the response they get back from politicians and political pundits is that "It isn't feasible because there aren't enough of the 1%" or "They'll leave the country" or "It's the politics of envy"! Even after everything you and other wealth economists have said, This. Still. Goes. On. But given that time and again I've seen graphs that show the top 1% own vast amounts of wealth compared to the rest of us, it stands to reason that there is more than enough money to be got from them and that changes to the tax avoidance system of loopholes could make a real difference. If all countries signed up to a deal that says "Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide [your taxes]" then there'll **be** no escape from paying their fair share.

Taxing unrealised gains (which is the process of HMRC collection of cash) is not a feasible solution. I (and i doubt many people would want to) do not want to pay tax on the paper gains on say a property I own to HMRC every year in the years my property goes up in value (by an amount determined no doubt by HMRC). And by the way, if my property goes down in value, is HRMC going to give me cash back or just tax credit (IOU) using your idea???? The cost of living crisis is already too high and implementing your solution would make matters even worse. The paper gains or losses on assets (Houses, shares, bonds, factories, buildings) is not the same as earned income/dividends/or asset sales which are all cash transactions and can be taxed with the applied tax laws. If you are dissatisfied with the current system of capitalism that has ended up with too few owning too much and that's not fair in your mind, then just speak your mind in a direct and straight forward way. If what you think is that the UK government should just Nationalise a portion of ALL existing assets in the UK (say 10% of everything, every house, every bond, every listed share, etc), the just say it for goodness sake. BTW, this formulae is used liberally by the Chinese government for huge swathes of assets in China (State owned companies, etc.), I am not thinking that system is so good for the people there. I assume you also think that the government will spend or redistribute that capital that has been nationalised/confiscated in a wise and 'fair' way. How many people would want the Government to manage their personal money??? Would you Gary?

The issue with many ultra wealthy individuals and families is that they strive to be domiciled in the middle of the ocean, using extremely good tax lawyers etc to arrange their affairs, so limiting the tax they pay on income and gains in any individual domicile. What has to be rebuilt is the concept of responsibility - if you or your family hold British passports, or are regularly living and working in the UK, then you pay a fair share of your worldwide income in tax. The basic concept is easy to understand, but very difficult to define in the detail needed in tax law. Perhaps use a wealth tax based on estimated net assets where if your UK income tax & CGT paid does not exceed 0.5% of your net wealth then the balance is due as tax?

I worked 12 years for a final salary when I left of £28,000.00. That property up north during those 12 years gained £60k and lost it all again. In fact I’m struggling to sell it for what I paid for it, and covering a mortgage on it which has risen £700 p/month. Now if I paid capital gains annually on the original price increase in the asset, would I be getting refunds now?? Genuine question as I don’t know. I’m figured you were saying Rishi should be paying income tax on the capital appreciation of his assets even though they haven’t been sold yet.

I'm sorry but this video is totally misleading to the point it's just wrong, you keep using "income" and capital growth interchangeably, when they aren't the same thing at all (and you know it), and making up some passive income (that they don't have else it would be on their tax return), saying "oh she MAKES £1m a week", no she doesn't... that is just straight up incorrect and wrong, you're being purposely misleading to make it out something underhanded is going on, saying they are "hiding" things. Literally everyone in the country is in the same situation, If I own a house for £500k, and next year it's now worth £550k, I didn't "make" 50k, I only make 50k if I sell it and realise that gain by selling it, which is when I will be taxed on it (just like Rishi was taxed on some gain he actually realised last year). You're being deliberately misleading just to be controversial and it's intellectually dishonest. If you want to say they are super wealthy and might not have the public's best interest in mind, fine that could be quite a legitimate point, but don't do it by confusing people making out like they are doing something they aren't.

Very neat observation about why Rish! might have deliberately chosen to realise £2m capital gains and pay tax on it - I expect you are right about his motives. Your insightful observations would be better made if you just stuck to the facts. Rish!'s father-in-law is in India, so his father-in-law's income would never be taxable in the UK. His wife has voluntarily given-up her non-dom status (it was a bad look after all), so pays UK taxes on all her worldwide income. No-one (not even you in your £1m flat) pays tax on capital gains until they are realised via a sale, so neither Rish! or his wife are avoiding tax; neither Rish! or his wife have income they are not paying tax on - they have unrealised Capital Gains which would become taxable were they to realise those gains. Suggesting there is taxable income of £5m/week from Rish! and his wife is utter nonsense.

What you’re saying is not correct. Total rubbish. You have made assumptions. If you own stock in a company and property, if the value of these assets increase in value. You cannot pay income tax on it that would be unrealistic. You pay tax when you sell the asset. Which is correct Otherwise your saying every year when your house increase in value, that is passive income and you should get a tax bill from the tax man. But how can we pay the tax bill when it’s still tied up in the house. If he says he earned 2million, then he earned two million. You cannot tax something that is not in your pocket yet. So any investments that are increasing in value does not count. Tax is based on the person, not your family. For a you tuber I would really like an unbiased view. I am not rich and I agree the money rich people earn is crazy. How much money does one person need. But the only way to not be poor, is to work hard and improve your own life.

This is a rambling and repetitive rant which is factually wrong (intentionally so, I expect, just to try to make a contrived political point). A tax return doesn't include one's spouse or father-in-law's income. So the premise of this whole discussion is nonsense. Sunak's wife is vastly wealthier than Sunak - lucky him. Sunak's tax return solely represents his earnings and no one else's. The tax rate on that return doesn't reflect that some of those gains have already been taxed i.e. if it's dividends, they've already had a 20% tax (roughly speaking) so the personal tax component is in addition to that corporation tax component. Some of his earnings will likely have been taxed in other jurisdictions also, so they'll come with a double taxation agreement. That said, Capital gains is taxed at a lower rate, for a variety of reasons.

His oft quoted fact is property can't move but when property becomes a burden, it is discarded, not miraculously handed iver to. Social housing. Like starmer, he has no solution

remember that you're not making 5% net income passively; inflation is eating away at the value of your savings at the same time. It's somewhere net even or lower, since inflation was previously double-digit for a few years, while savings rate was still 5%, so when looking at the past 3-4 years you're probably at a net loss if just taking passive income. so you're not "making a million a week", you're just keeping up the value of your investment with inflation. never mind that it's all tied up in stock and there's no interest in that anyway.

It's great that you are explaining this because it's obvious that the majority of people have no idea how real wealth works. This knowledge is crucial in changing the system.
