Software updates are often installed as FOTA (firmware over the air), i.e. via the internet, without any action on the part of the customer. As the robotic lawnmowers are connected to the manufacturer's network via the internet, it is even mandatory for them to install security-relevant updates. This can have unpleasant consequences for the customer and can even lead to a temporary standstill of the system.
The risk is particularly high for wireless robotic lawn mowers with GPS. In the case of the Segway Navimow and the Kress RTKn, a software update actually shifted the map by a few centimeters. This definitely requires a new installation or programming, which means a lot of work.
We test and compare all robotic lawn mowers intensively on our test site. We can quickly assess how the software behaves on the standardized lawns. In the best case, as with the Solo RS Pro3 robot, we even have a say in the software development and when this update is installed. In addition to the Solo, the following robots are currently being tested: Husqvarna Nera and EPOS, Stihl iMow, Luba 2, Zucchetti Ambrogio 4WD.
Unfortunately, the timing and content of most FOTA updates is unknown. It's a bit of an over-egg, which at best brings improvements and new functions; at worst paralyzes the robot. Even we as specialist dealers usually have no influence on this.
