In this video I talk about what it's like to be a Risk Group photographer while showing you the first roll of film I finished in my Leica M6 after the first lockdown. If you ever wondered what this has been like for those of us who are at risk, this video will definitely be interesting for you!
By the way, if you're wondering why I say 6 months when I mean 9 months that's because I recorded the talking footage 3 months ago and decided to post it during the next spike which inevitably followed as soon as they lifted restrictions again. The graphs and all the news clippings are from the time of posting this, so the Groundhog Day continues, as predicted. This isn't rocket science, anyone with high school maths can predict where these policies are going to lead. And in case you are looking for that twitter thread with my previous predictions, you can check it out here: / 1296934840869302274

Somehow I knew this wasn't a " before bed video". Good that I watched in the morning. The bike photograph was a "wow moment" in the video. Awesome reaction there Lilly!

Ah, yes, this would probably have been a tad too ominous before bed maybe? The bike photograph was my favourite too, the timing worked out so well! When I have a 35mm on my camera, I’m always ready for these kinds of moments and have it pre-focused at a reasonable distance. And then I just take them from the hip once I’m close enough! With this one it worked out so well! Thank you again for your kind words!

This was a great video. I'm glad you spoke from your perspective and allowed yourself to rant. It's so valuable. I love your use of music and the way you let the footage breathe, if that makes sense.

Thank you Kate, I’m glad you liked the video! Yeah, the rant needed to happen, because this was frustrating me a lot. I’ve said similar things on Twitter before, but that’s a place with very little context and here I could elaborate on what exactly I mean and why I feel this way. And yay, glad you like my editing! The two guitar based tracks I wrote in lockdown and and the third one was a track that I usually get complaints about in regular street photography videos, because it’s a bit too creepy and suspenseful. Fit the mood of that night walk perfectly though. And then something more hopeful from pre-pandemic days towards the end!

So happy to see you are staying safe, and being creative through this mess. Loved the music when you go out for your first night shoot, very tense. I feel the same about the lockdowns. Thank you so much James! We would indeed be so much better off if we had just stuck with the lockdowns and kept those borders closed. The first lockdown worked well for us, but then tourism brought it back 😒 It was so obvious that it was a bad idea, but the economy of this country is just so dependent on it. And I’m glad you liked the music! That track is called “Who killed Captain Kirk” and last time I used it as background music people found it pretty ominous 😂 I thought it was a good fit. It will be on the EP that’s coming out soon! Stay safe and take care ✨

Love the Leica smug face at the begining haha 🤣 I can only imagine how difficult and stressful it is due to your health. I'm relatively healthy person but because of my anxiety I have missed out on many great pictures, I can sympathize somewhat. Hopefully the 'rona' situation will get better soon.

Haha, Leica smug face 😆 gotta have some fun even when things aren’t easy! 😉 I‘m sorry to hear that you‘re struggling with anxiety. I know the anxiety beast quite well too, such a pain to be dealing with that. Things are starting to look a bit better around here right now thanks to the vaccinations although I‘m not even vaccinated myself yet. I hope it‘ll improve even more soon! Although I probably only trust the situation properly when the numbers are going down everywhere. Not quite the case yet, but at least it‘s been better than it‘s been for 11 months!!

hola. I am enjoying your reflection pics, which are showing how you are feeling. I used Amazon and bought h94 masks from Korea. they have custm fits and adjustable ear loops. I have a compromised immune system and am very careful in where I go and what I do. A lot of sanitizer lotion. I am disabled but plan for avoiding bad things, I do not let it win. All that aside, we deal with life everyday. One of the challenges as a photographer is to "bring home the goods". Creativity is what we live. We find ways to get the shot, and usually that is how we come up with good pics. I have only seen your work for a few months, but can see you have what I call "the eye". The way of seeing a shot where others see nothing. Keep it up. Oh, yes, I like your rig to have the GoPro see what you are seeing. I will come up with something similar, just like all good photogs do. Thank you. Pam

Hei Pam, thank you for your kind words! Sorry to hear that you are immunocompromised too, it’s such a difficult situation to be in right now. I will check out those H94 masks you recommended I never heard of them. It seems there are many different ones out there so possibly finding something that fits well becomes easier now! And I can definitely recommend the GoPro on top of the camera! It’s actually a good learning tool as well, because you see the shots you missed or what you could have done better. It’s really helpful and also sometimes explains why a shot turned out less good than expected! Staying creative in these difficult times is a challenge, but we keep trying and that’s the most important part! Thank you again and stay safe! ✨

Hi Lilly, I hear what you said about your mask. I had similar problems with my FFP2-Masks. I recently tried out an FFP3-Mask from 3m (Model "aura 9330+") It fits much, much better than any other mask I've worn so far and it doesn't restrict the airflow as much. If it feels too restrictive regarding breathing: 3m also makes FFP2-Masks with the same mask-form-factor. According to studies it's one of the masks that fits really well and with almost any "face-type". I also don't have any problems with my glasses fogging up since I wear that mask. Hang in there and stay safe!
@LillySchwartz

Thank you so much, this information is very useful! We’re just checking them out now! The one I have right now with the antiviral fabric is from living guard and is as effective as an FFP2 Mask with a medical certificate and everything. It’s reusable too so that really helps. It works so much better for me than the other masks. I had to buy a kids size though so that it fits. 😂 I think by now they make regular FFP2 masks in kids size too, so that would be another good option probably. Figuring out the right safe mask is such a headache and the steamed up glasses, so annoying! Again, thank you 🙏 much appreciated! Stay safe!

Lilly, stay safe and know that there are people watching who understand and care. Remember that as you are young you'll have many years ahead where the time of Covid will be a small and distant memory. I'm 67 years old, and Covid is cutting a huge piece out of the years where I am both retired and healthy enough to walk in the streets or woods, or travel to the places I want to photograph. I feel your anger but remember you and your husband can take the frustration you have now and turn it into extra motivation for the activities you love, when Covid is gone and you are once again 'free'.
@LillySchwartz
@LillySchwartz 3 года назад
Thank you so much for your kind words, David! I totally feel your frustration. To be honest, my health is so weird that I have no guarantees either. I have periods when I don’t do particularly well, so any time where I’m relatively ok with my energy levels and not going through a flare but stuck inside like this also takes huge chunks out of the time when I can do stuff. So I can totally relate to what you’re saying. It sometimes feels like all that precious time is slipping away for us while everyone else can just do whatever they want and they don’t have a care in the world. I hope you find a secluded spot to do the things you love too! Are there any woods near you where you can stay away from people? Here they are definitely the safest spot. At least when it’s not tourist season! Thank you again, I appreciate that you care and understand! Stay safe!

@@LillySchwartz Hi Lilly, and thanks for your reply and concern on my behalf. I have found a woods but I lack the endurance to do any extensive walking/hiking now, but I shoot what I can. I've spent a great deal of time re-editing older images and printing the best so I have a physical copy to look at -- I'll never learn to trust digital media! I came to your channel because of photography, but see you create music. That's a good way to stay away from crowds -- work on those guitars! (I failed at learning to play, so returned to photography!)
@LillySchwartz
@LillySchwartz 3 года назад
Oh sorry to hear that you can’t hike far! My suggestion would be to try a close focus capable lens! I can have a lot of fun with my Mamiya C220 in the woods without walking very far because there are worlds between one tree and the next if you can focus close! I don’t trust digital technology either, precisely because I used to work in IT. I have like 2 backups of my stuff and print my work too. And funny that you suggest I should focus more on the music, that’s exactly what I’m doing at the moment. I just finished an EP and I’m working on a bunch of videos around that! And of course all the music in this video was my own too! By the way, if you want to learn the guitar but found it a little too intimidating, you can always go with a Ukulele first! The chords tend to be much simpler and it’s easier to remember where things are on 4 strings. The skills definitely transfer, the strumming patterns and the finger coordination. Also a good option is the bass, instead of playing chords or many fast notes, the bass will only play one at a time, which makes it a lot easier to pick up and the strings correspond directly to the guitar, just 2 octaves down, so again, whatever you learn on the bass you can then play on the regular guitar too! Bass of course has other challenges - the strings are heavy and rough on the fingers - but even that can be remedied by playing a bass ukulele. That’s the cool instrument you saw behind me on the left in the video! It’s super comfortable to play and it sounds a little bit like an upright bass - the big ones they play in jazz and classical music! And then there are always synthesisers too! I find them the most fascinating and they are easy to play without any need for virtuoso level piano playing abilities. There are a lot sequencers that can be programmed without playing at all, so it only needs a good ear and not any actual piano playing skills! So, don’t think you need to be a virtuoso on any instrument to make music. I don’t play any of my instruments particularly well live, but I get by when recording and make music anyway!

@@LillySchwartz A few weeks ago I saw a Q&A with Daniel Milnor (former documentary photographer), who said that this ugly period in time should be used to learn something. Be it a language course, photography editing, expanding cooking abilities or learning to play an instrument. Of course, this is not possible for everyone depending on how they feel during the lockdown, but for some it could be an incentive to start something new. By the way, I am curious. What is your story regarding photography and music. I admit I have not perused your earlier videos, but it seems you have quite a creative side. Music is many years back, but what about photography? I have been playing music for the last 20+ years, but I only started photography some 4 years ago.
@LillySchwartz
@LillySchwartz 3 года назад
Ah yes, I actually used the lockdown for learning a bit of bass on a bass uke. That’s when it was still quiet around here. For the last 11 months they’ve been drilling and hammering every day, several different renovation projects in this house and the surrounding ones, so I had to resort to instruments that don’t end up in the same frequency range as a drill or were at least louder. At the moment I’m playing with a semi modular synthesiser and getting my head around modular in general, which is fun! There is a video about my story with music, if you’re interested. I stopped playing for about 15 years until I started again 2 years ago, but played from a very young age and learned music theory then. I mostly made dark ambient with guitars before I stopped and I’m finding my way back to that at the moment. Just with way better gear, because instruments have become so very very cheap! It’s a great time to be a musician! Well, that’s the short story, for the long one check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6fjRzlpszdc.html As for photography: I never really stopped with that. I already annoyed all my friends with my camera when I was a kid and my dad had to tell me not to blast through an entire roll in one afternoon 😂 and I still do that! At 17 I got my first digital camera and the only time when I wasn’t photographing that much was when I was at uni because I simply didn’t have the time. After I graduated I started taking pictures again and that’s what I’ve been doing full time ever since, about 10 years now? So photography was always my constant. Even when I considered music my life I always took pictures at gigs! But then I’m really a multidisciplinary person at heart. At uni I studied Media and Cultural Studies and then got a Masters in Robotics. And I actually started with drawing videos on RU-vid, because that’s something else I do quite a lot! It all comes in handy for my videos!

I am also a high risk person and can understand your fears all to well. You are very correct that the interests of business are more important to the government than those of the people. The same is true here in Germany - we are currently experiencing a half-hearted lockdown. The high figures are only now being slowly dampened by the inoculations. Going shopping or travelling by bus can be a risky business. You are relying on your and everyone's else's masks fitting properly and still in working order. Outside is, however, is about as safe as you can get - with or without a mask as long as you are keeping your distance. If you are wearing a mask outside, I really can't see much danger in going closer. I suspect that travelling by lift in your block of flats is an awful lot more dangerous due to possible aerosol. And what about the people who deliver stuff? According to the Corona app he was infected ... I see nothing wrong in using a telephoto lens for street photography. A 85mm lens can be quite small and it doesn't move you that far away from your subjects. Anyhow, stay safe and healthy.
@LillySchwartz
@LillySchwartz 3 года назад
Yeah, I watch the numbers in Germany too, because my parents still live there. The lockdown light was a silly measure that couldn’t have worked. I hope the numbers go down soon! In general you are correct, for most people with a working immune system outside would be quite safe. I don’t have a working immune system though. I have two autoimmune disorders and although both aren’t lung specific they are correlated with upper respiratory infections and lung problems. So I always catch *everything* and I once caught someone’s cold from talking with them for 2 minutes outside 🤷‍♀️ and in my case it also takes a long time to get over stuff like that. The last time I caught the flu I was down for 3 entire months - it was the bad one that killed so many people in 2017 I think? 😬 This is why I actually self-isolated and avoided air travel in winter already before Corona, because my immune system is just very weak. There are some people in the high risk category that just have a higher risk of dying if they get it, and there are others like me who on top of it also have a higher risk of catching it in the first place. This is why in many countries there are several risk categories with different priorities. In Germany I would be in category 2 while people who just have some co-morbidity that makes complications more likely are in category 3. I’m glad you’re not part of the category 1 or 2! It frankly sucks when outside is dangerous too 🙄 The idiotic thing is, even though I have a higher risk of infection here in Spain they only prioritise category 1 with the vaccination so I have to wait for my age group to get the vaccine. In Germany I would have had my vaccine already quite a while ago and all my friends with similar health issues are vaccinated already! As for 85mm street photography: When I started with street photography many years ago I used to shoot a 50mm on APS-C because I was still afraid of getting closer. That’s about 85mm in full frame. Personally I think it’s the “I’m too chicken to get close” perspective and the compression from the focal length is quite visible in pictures taken with an 85 or 90mm. I don’t really like that look for street which is why I went wider and wider with my lenses. Now for street portraits, that’s a different story. For that 85/90mm is a really good length, but you still have to get just as close as if you were shooting regular street with a 50mm! Might as well shoot a 50mm then. It’s not something I usually do either so I don’t even have a lens like that. So, I don’t really like the look of 85mm for street, and even if I did I would have to buy a 90mm first for a Leica and that’s expensive. And if I don’t like the look, what’s the point except that I’m desperately trying to do something that just doesn’t work in a situation like mine. I actually considered this carefully when I realised that street with a 50mm still feels quite unsafe, but ultimately decided that I’d much prefer shooting landscapes without many people around and I have the gear for that already. And to be honest it’s also quite stressful to dodge people with their masks under their chin while looking through a viewfinder! In any case, thank you for your suggestions and thoughts, I appreciate them! Stay safe and I hope you get your vaccine soon if you don’t have it already!

Interesting perspective from your part of the world, thanks for sharing! In general I find that any part of the world, the people that are considered "not useful" because of a decease or handicap will be the last group of people that get help! I just have to look at a friend that hit the wall hard and have to struggle to get help via the system that claims to want to help her. It doesn't help that a virus has delayed and forced some programs to either adapt to being distance based and making it harder to see a health care person for when she needs some help! I am not going to get into the nonsense that is to compare country "X" and "y" because every country has their pros and cons with how they deal with this virus mess! In the end I hope that you get the help you require and at some point can get back that level of comfort that existed before 2020! Take care and if you need anything that I can do for you just ask!
@LillySchwartz
@LillySchwartz 3 года назад
Thank you so much, Sina! Yes, we’ve talked about this many times, every country takes different measures and frankly in most of the Western countries they took the wrong ones. Technically I’m disabled too, but since it’s so very very difficult and demeaning to get this recognised by any government I actually decided not to go down that road. I tried once in Germany and met such barriers that I just couldn’t possibly have spent the little energy I had at the time on dealing with all that crazy bureaucratic mess. It’s almost impossible to get help if you’re disabled and that is the case in many countries, not just Germany or Sweden. We get forgotten, left out or even actively put in danger all the time, even before the pandemic, it’s just a mess. But well, I still believe a society should be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members and with that in mind Western countries just fail to measure up at all. Ultimately it’s not about which country we live in but about what kind of society we have and in the Western countries it’s a society that values profits higher than the lives of their citizens. It was like that already before the pandemic. Our situation now just made it painfully clear. In any case, I’m really glad that you’re vaccinated now and have a much better chance at staying safe and taking pictures! I hope we’ll get to that point here too eventually! Take care and stay safe!

Well, you know I have your back in this, since we're both in similar circumstances, health wise, with things that don't help our chances if we ended up getting the bug, Lucky for me, though, I can go to places where people are thin on the ground, but if I have to be in crowds I make sure I take the precautions I need to. When I go for walks with my cameras, I tend to stick to back streets and places where people don't congregate. There's usually plenty of things to photograph, so I'm happy with that. I'm glad you're staying safe.

You're welcome :D On my walk this afternoon, apart from people in motor vehicles, I saw about all of 6 people out and about. The only drama for me was slipping and flipping a whole lot of smelly mud up onto the back of my pants!!! Didn't bother going home, just kept walking and dried myself out. Though, I stank like a swamp!!! :D :P Was down by the creek in one of our local parks. It's good exercise, though, as I walk a couple of mile every day, if and when I can. The average back street here, gutter to gutter, would be about 20 feet wide. Main roads, a lot wider, still. Plenty of room!!

Lol, oh no, I’m glad you didn’t hurt yourself! I actually did that too a couple times, fell in the mud while trying to take a picture. One time this happened I had a digital camera too and it wouldn’t turn on after I fell. I didn’t have a spare battery on me so I had to go all the way home on public transport for an hour, covered in mud while worrying that I had broken my main camera at the time 😱 The evil little thing ran out of battery in the exact moment I fell 😂 I don’t think that camera liked me very much 😉

And about the difficulties finding subjects for street photo: remember you're on a safari! Lions and gazelles they don't jump in front of your rover for you to take the pics.. you must know the ways of the hunter: find watering places, find feeding grounds, and you will find the game. Walking in the same circles never worked- get a map, zone it out, find said areas, trace a route with appropriate timing observations and minimal path travelled- get smart about the hunt and the prey shall come to you. On landscapes: yes, they're great.. I mean big... and the nicest thing about them is that they stay still ..mostly. Whenever the cap'n Morgan or his "merry crew" is not around (Cap'n Morgan spiced rum, a sincere heartfelt recommendation, with 70% pepsi in it makes for a niiiiice evening ..erm..digestive ..yes, let's leave it at that but try it and you'll see.. wisdom of the old, hark ye, hear ye...). Or when there are no tsunamis/volcanoes /thunderstorms like those you caught during your clip.T-storms are wondrous things! I like lightning, I mean.. it has so much..potential ! lol. Don't hide under tall trees and the like, use a ND 8 and LOOONG exposures , or one of those flash triggers, yada, yada, you know- but mostly- have fun. Recently I dug out my positively ancient Nikon D 100. Ever see one of those? It was, practically, the third practical DSLR ever and sports an amazing 1 inch display(!) in colors! and a CF card. Has 6 distrurbing Mpix. And is an absolute beast at portraiture. I loved it then and I love it now..(nope, that's not Fernando-note to self : change the god+++n radio station, too much ABBA makes me go nuttier than usual).I had a bit of an eureka moment thinking back to where it all started.. early digital with its quirks and so-like-film grain ..and the bodies that weigh a ton ..Oh the joys of shooting raw and developping the results.. or sticking it in BW mode and lending it to curious friends (it was still the wow, a digital camera! time way back then) -and I was like yeah, but you know.. this one's the cheaper model , it only shoots black and white. What does a geezer do in lockdown? (besides going to work ..) - well - I bought a box of SH really old Nikkor lenses for my old monster. And the (other) old geezer said: well you know, I've lost the back cover on this one.. how's I throw in a working D100 body instead, and give it all for 20 euros? Deal, man.. and now I've got 2 D 100s. One was mine from the start- the other's a stray cat. Wifey darling does not love it.. so..I do what wedding photogs did back in the day, and carry two bodies so I don't switch lenses. And then I get back rubs with pain reliever creams.. and they still work. Okay , take care, bye for now, out to shoot some "digital rolls" - time to fill up those CF's!!

Hah, that’s brilliant! I still have all my 6Mpix cameras as well, dug them out during one of my trips to Germany! Look for the first Germany travel vlog and you can see all my old digital cameras there! I must make a video about them at some point. The only thing I dislike about them is that the files are so small it’s hard to print anything but small stuff from those files. As for staking out the hunt and zoning the city out: Been there done that. I circle around the watering holes, but it turns out there are no giraffes in Greenland 🤷‍♀️ Yes, of course I still manage to take a good street photo here every now and then, but the amount of effort it takes and the amount of film it wastes is beyond measure. I still try when I feel like it, but this place has slowly turned me into a landscape photographer, because it’s just so much better for it. It’s kinda like cutting onions with a bread knife. It can be done, but it’s quite wasteful and annoying. I lived in a capital city before moving here. I know how easy, fun and comfortable street photography can be in the right place. Here it’s like pulling teeth. In slow motion. Without painkillers. Have fun with your new old digital friends. I still remember how excited I was about my first digital camera!

Yes it is nice with its 6Mp and all and about the printsss... weeeeelll I just had the craziest idea:you have a printer, a nice and color printer yes? okay, print on transparency paper. But in small format. Then.. project, enlarge, or scan- have lots and lots of fun.

Interestingly, I don’t own a photo quality printer! I investigated digital negatives several times already and it would solve quite a few of my problem with certain negatives that have scratches on them, but ultimately I neither have the space nor the printing volume to maintain a photo printer. I print in the darkroom directly from the negative or order digital prints from a lab. It fits my workflow better. Of course any print even from a digital negative of 6Mpix will never reach the quality of a print from a real negative because the resolution just isn’t there. The printer can’t invent what isn’t there! But well there are now a few options to upscale pictures algorithmically with AI that work quite well. It has its limits, but I still wish I had taken the pictures taken with my first digital camera on film instead!

@@LillySchwartz well I lived in simpler times way back when 6 Mpix were enough for an A5 sized print and could,if pushed ,get away with A4.With 10 or 12 you had A3 covered,a D200 would do everything.I myself found abandoning the chemicals and red light and wasted rolls for faulty mixes..liberating- nor needing or wanting anything more...

I usually print in at least A4, but that’s a stretch with upscaling at 6MPix. Back then though I rarely ever got prints larger than 13x18, so I felt like I didn’t need more. And now I’m kicking myself for it! But hey, no issues with current digital cameras. If anything their files are too big, rather than too small. My own workflow is all film at the moment because I feel the colour science still has some catching up to do in digital. It’s gotten a lot better in the last few years, but there is still some scope for improvement. In general, I find digital cameras get in the way too much for me. I only use them for video. But that’s personal workflow preference. Using the right tool for the purpose is much more important than the medium. Wouldn’t want to shoot a concert with strobe lighting on film for example 😂 that would be more pulling teeth without anaesthetic 😉

Hello Lilly, sorry to hear about how hard it hit you.. yup the pandemic sucks big time and so does being locked inside.. but you are incredibly lucky you know? Yes your job does require that you get in contact with people- maybe at a distance, but hear me out: we've got pretty much the same thing here in Romania- but I was "lucky"- some doofus decided we were "essential personnel" (not really but so it was decided) so I had to go to work at the height of the pandemic/lockdown and they were getting in bed with Rona , dropping left and right around us..not nice at all.To face it daily at close quarters, that's a struggle , me and Rona in opposing trenches..But never give up, never surrender ( the punish and enslave part is entirely optional, courtesy of our friends at Hammerfall) . Glasses and masks, oh my, what a joy, I know it well. The solution is to try and fit some sort of conforming padding so the air doesn't bleed from the top . Yes I look funny with a bit of heavy copper wire taped on top of my mask but my vision is clear!! About the fit and things - surgical masks are enough! For ever! The heavy duty ones are really bad - they restrict too much air and not much more virus.Surgical ones already fit okay and can be fitted in all sorts of ways .About getting a permit for every walk and such- yes we had it too here but we had to check a short list detailing why are you out: medical reasons, work, important emergencies and .. yes, exercise because it is vital .So choose "personal health and exercise reasons" . There is safety in teles and big zooms you know ? :) Screw the gov't.. did you ever really really think they care about us? Ha ha ha, you have me really laughing now. Imagine the pressure some poor dude has on him, on one side the doctors telling they have to isolate all and basically shut down and lock up everything, and on the other hand you have restaurants and "entertainment industry" that are basically starving without working. About Covid in China : they enforce curfews with bullets you know? For a government everyone is expendable, they don't care about Tom, Dick, Harry, or anyone in particular- they care about voters en masse and if you can help them, they count you in .. and that's pretty much it. Nothing personal, business as usual. I myself am in the high risk group - and can't do a thing avbout it. I bit the bullet and got the shot, and besides some minor nuisances I still live.I keep myself almost locked in my office and limit contact using mail and phone for guys that are just next door or next building -luckily I am not in any task teams right now... On the other hand let me tell you somtehing about life : it is meant for living! Not for worrying! Sure, take all precautions you can, but carry on (not necessarily smiling, draw that smile on your mask if you want, I don't like ABBA) and do not needlessly worry. Look, I'll tell you plainly : got an old and very sick colleague, 2 stents in his heart, diabetes with insulin dependency and hipertension- and a month ago he got in bed with Rona, everyone including him thought it's the end- got lucky, it was just like a bad flu, there are some post-effects but minor and the guy's now fine and a local hero telling us how he "bedded" Rona and lived to tell the tale. Yet a very healthy acquaintance of mine , half my age too, got a bad case and is hanging by a thread.Hope he pulls it off. You do not automatically get Rona or die just because your medical history is interesting. That's what I tell myself every morning, there are dentists that refuse to work on me because of my heavy anti-coagullant medicine and other "parts of my personal charm" . I stay away from people too as much as I can but that's an airborne disease , remember that . Yes, whas hands, products you buy etc but get the mask to fit right- the virus is not that small , it can still be caught by surgical masks and those are lighter and work ok. On heavy duty masks: nope, you were not having a panic attack, it was lack of oxygen and severely decreased moisture in the breathing air. These heavy duty masks make the air so dry it is basically painful to breathe. It sucks, it is normal , don't use those unless you ..paint with smelly paints or work with fiberglass, nasty stuff you don't want in your lungs. I was a part-time photographer a long time ago too - nothing serious, it was lovely work that devolved into hobby as I finished my studies and finally went to the joys of being tied to an office.I don't presume to be able to help there at all but .. what's your longest tele? It's time to play sniper , get a 500 or more...not very artistic but damn safe. Be happier, change your mindset : the tourists are wild beasts.. herds of (tame?)impalas or hippos, or .. whatever the case, and you're on a safari. Your city is your jungle.. use the tele , avoid the stampede or unfriendly claws , teeth and horns and bring back amazing photos of the most dangerous predator on Earth : "huuuumannsss";).. And last but not least : I know you are a delicate person of refined tastes but whenever you feel down, remember these are heavy metal times!!! Helloween, Hammerfall, old Nightwish, Iced Earth, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, any brand of Northern metal that floats your boat and Sabaton- that's the doctor's prescription. 10 to 15 minutes daily before every time you get out to your safari. And now, pardon my quote, but.. good night and good hunting! The human animal gets scared of long teles you know.. if you want them to keep distance, bring the longest lens you can, it looks intimidating enough. I mean It's just a camera, I got some myself, but still whenever someone takes aim in my direction with a long tele I feel a bit of a need to distance myself. PS : rely on us.. we're here, we hear you.. most people go through same or worse s##t daily and they will understand.Don't ever put your hopes in the gov't because - tell me when in history did that work right???? It only works if you join'em - then it would matter exactly what party is temporarily in charge and for how long etc. Otherwise, we're here at the grassroots and we look up at them. You know what you see when you're lying in the grass and you look up at people? Asses mostly. Yup, and that's exactly what most of those above us are.Chin up, you'll be fine. And yes, Rona's a b***ch. Hope we'll never meet her in person. PPS : my granpda's uncle was a priest and in times of trouble said that :come what may , but remember there's a spark of Divinity in you- and so in everyone around you. Whatever you do and whatever happens remember that and act accordingly." I personally think it makes me stronger and a bit more valuable than trash... now where did that spark go in the ones that rule us? well.. still searching- there must be something in them too, right, right... riiight??

Haha, Axel your thoughts brought me quite a few smiles, so thank you for that! Of course I’m not at all surprised that the government has let us down in this. I was always against state control and having grown up with a lot of nonsensical rule following around me in Germany, I have become sort of allergic to all of that. I just wouldn’t have believed that they’d go as far as they are going now. I guess I lost some of the faith in humanity I still had. I’m sorry that you’re also in a high risk category and that you can’t work remotely. That’s precisely what I mean. What on Earth are we risk group people to do when there is no other choice than to risk our lives! I’m incredibly lucky that I was freelance already before the pandemic. I mean, it completely destroyed my income, but at least we sort of get by and I’m not going to starve. That’s super lucky, but I feel like half the stuff I do has become impossible and the rest is being sabotaged by the daily hammering and drilling from neighbouring flats which has been going on for 11 months now. While photographers got no government support at any point during all this they subsidised the construction industry, so even self-isolating at home is hard on the nerves 🤷‍♀️ But well, we‘ve made it this far, we‘ll hold on and try to stay safe. As for telephoto: The problem is, this place is very densely populated because there are mountains all around us. There are only two modes of existence, it’s empty during siesta time - no street photography - or it is crowded at any other point during the day. Due to this the place was very difficult for street photography already before the pandemic. A lot of walking in circles, little results, but I used to circle and do it anyway. Now that the crowds are dangerous for me it’s even more of a problem and even with a telephoto it would be still impossible to stay away from people. It’s really not the ideal place for this situation. I think I’m going to stick with landscapes for a while. The place is fantastic for those, not sure whether you’ve seen any of my landscape photography videos, but the nature around here is pretty spectacular! Only problem: It always involves hiking up a mountain 😂 Still chuckling about the “Asses mostly” 😂 Thank you for cheering me up, that helps a lot!

@@LillySchwartz at 11 months of hammering, I would be at their door with the building administrator and a legal action suit to serve them. Reason? Public disturbance. In continued form. I mean wtf,they HAVE to respect the right to rest for everyone. That is if you are not in the unfortunate situation where a new block is being built.. but particular home improvement? That's ..sue-able. Bring a fireman axe and get it stuck in their door, and nail a citation with it... for public distrurbance. It's not like they own the whole building, and everyone in it, right? No, wait, don't.. Seriously now.You have recording equipment, right? Use it. Make a recording of the cacophony of construction sounds. Make sure to include the LOUDNESS METER. There are regulations for noise levels you know, and if they're over the limit they must pay- hard, hefty sums. Otherwise that's abuse. Send the nice recording to city hall and hope for the best.Mention work hours and degradation of quality of life while being in quarantine.There are official measurements that can be made based on those claims, and things can start to be nasty for them if you..roar a bit here and there. Hah, obviously you are unaware that there is practically no concept of loudness in this country. They speak so loudly that they now put loudness meters in school yards to train kids to be quieter because the loudness levels in public tend to be unhealthy. I think there are some time based regulations like no loud music after 10pm, but that’s about it. Also, going to the building administration itself won’t be possible if it’s the building administration itself is doing the renovations 😬 it wasn’t just one project. The first was repairing the facade, that was the building administration. The next one was a flat that they decided to redo completely. They pulled out everything completely. And then when those guys were getting quieter they started on the roof terrace of the neighbouring building. In all 11 months 🤷‍♀️ that’s what happens when the construction industry gets subsidised while photographers are told to apply for benefits that they don’t even qualify for 🙄 Protecting the mental health of those who are self-isolating is just as much a priority as saving their lives. We’re not even part of that cost benefit analysis.
