I got this from another person on youtube but I couldn't find the original post so I uploaded it to show others who are fans. It's too good for it not to be seen!
Red's "dirty rehearsals" were legendary at CBS Television City; people from other shows on adjoining studios would often turn up and watch Red and his guests (usually without being in costume) flub lines, swear and just take apart their carefully prepared sketches...and some of them were preserved on videotape or kinescope- including this one, the final version of which was seen on January 1, 1963.
She visited my ship, USS Coral Sea, in1969 on Yankee Station off the coast of Vietnam. She was lowered to the flight deck from a helicopter hoist and was being really funny. During that time, she was traveling all over numerous ships, bases and in-country. I love that woman and she was a true patriot!
I was lucky enough to have witnessed an impromptu performance of Martha when she was in the audience of the Rose Tatoo in West Hollywood back in the '80s - she was hilarious - and excellent - she kicked ass - no question, ands, ifs, or butts about it God Bless
My, I haven't laughed so hard in years. Martha was quite the rig, must've been something to have partied with her. From now on anytime I see her name or think of her I will do so with a very big grin on my face.
CRMunir1 George Adelman As Red is holding his tongue with both hands, Martha Raye says in sentence, preceding, "A tongue like that and all he wants to do is Hump" "I know him". Apparently, that was her initial remark on the exaggerated( but imaginary) length of the tongue. What a characters they both were.
Red's rehearsals were legend at CBS for being really hilariously dirty, especially when he had someone like Martha Raye as a guest who could be pretty dirty herself. The thing is you could probably show this rehearsal tape today on regular TV!
Lampshade51 this was almost X rated stuff. I remember when Moms Mabley records were considered "dirty" and strictly for adults. and Richard Pryor albums *were* for adults only
Martha and Red, Damn they just don't have comic's like that today. They were hilarious and Red does remind me of Harvey Korman... they loved laughing at their own jokes and screw-ups.
They were risqué in the 50s oh yeah! Burlesque was still around. Take a look at the outtakes from, "You Bet Your Life," with Groucho Marx, very funny and quite risqué.
She played as Benita Bizarre in the Bugaloos from 1970-1972. With some other characters like IQ, Harmony, Funky Rat, Joy, Woofer, Tweeter, and Courage. She had a zapper gun just set it and it can do strange things. RIP Red Skelton and Martha Raye.
So the story goes this is why you never, EVER flubbed a line in front of Red and the cameras. Red would instantly recover and run with it in an entirely different direction, and keep on running and running and running...as long as it brought down the house.
@Barndancer61 Completely agree with you, my friend. I just Love the contrasts, of Contempary comedy, and Vintage. Max Miller (for example) is my Hero, and this skit, could have been taken out of his Blue Book ! LOL all the Best. Charles UK
Even in the final telecast, Red would always go off the script. That is what made his show so good. You never knew what would come out of his mouth. Martha Raye was every bit his match as an ad-libber.
I didn't think RED SKELTON was that nasty! He always prevented himself as being conservative and wholesome. Still, I used to love watching his TV shows when I was a boy, then a teenager.
I have seen the finished show. Miss Raye sings several songs accompanied by her ex husband David Rose , Red Skeltons long time musical director . The next year she sang duets with Judy Garland another fellow ex spouse of David Rose. I wonder what their rehearsals were like?
apparently they were a lot of fun! there are actual outtakes of Judy and Martha Raye rehearsing their numbers together on the JG show collection. Someone posted a few on RU-vid. From what I've seen Judy enjoyed having her on her show, that episode is filled with moments of Martha surprising Judy and making her laugh uncontrollably. The only issue I think she had with that episode was that Peter Lawford was too much of a drunk to be professional and get thru takes. Also another Judy & Martha connection, during one of Judy's concert tours she got hurt I don't remember if it was her arm, leg, or both but she wasn't able to perform well so Martha helped fill in for her alongside Mickey Rooney and I think Johnny Mathis. I know this still exists somewhere it might even be on RU-vid still, it's a lot of fun.
matt mammone and more respect and good manners. There is a time and a place for everything. I'm sick of everyone, including children having mouths like sewers.
Extrapolate please. There was a time , the 1950's, where people would speak their minds. People talk and use whatever language they want. The idea that the mid 20th century was a better place and time is a fallacy.
@@cattycorner8 I hope you can appreciate the genius of comedy here. I am kind loving and empathetic, and mu sense of humor has a lot to do with my good health.
