Ristar and most of the enemies were altered in the West to appear more "angry". The reasoning behind this is not known, though many games of the era (e.g. Kirby) received similar treatment. As you can see, Ristar's default stance is more cheerful in the Japanese game!

The US variation of ristar is supposed to be that he is more cooler and brave while Japan has him more innocent and kind

I love how US games always gets changed to make the character look angry. I think some sonic and Kirby games had different box art which made them look angry for some reason

Yup just checked. A lot of Kirby games make him look like some angry badass in US versions only. However ristar is the first time I’ve seen the actual in game sprite change just for US

Sonic always had a cocky ass smile for the US cover art, and rarely did he appear mad or have a frown. The Japanese version of the Sonic CD cover art shows him frowning while the US one has him smiling.

I did. I had to use switch online (fine i cheated when i got hit) but if you have the actual game, go to options then passwords and put in the password: ILOVEU and you will be taken to the stage select. Ps. The last boss is super hard

Remember that one change for Trouble Bruin from Dynamite Headdy where he originally has a purple colour and a smile (JP)? Trouble Bruin was supposedly a bear but people always portrayed him as a cat. The localization team changed hia main colour to brown and edit his face to make him look more angry. That didn't work very well.

Ele é mais fofinho na versão japonesa, isso ocorreu com a capa do Kirby também, fizeram ele ficar com cara de bravo, originalmente ele está sorridente. Aqui ocorreu o mesmo pelo visto, mas eu fico com o de cima, eu gosto de personagens com movimentações enquanto parados! 😍😍😍😍

Tbh, i prefer the japaneese version. Also, it's not just sprites, the history of the game was changed when it comes in US Ik that they made "rude" due to commercial purposes(the same treatment that made for Kirby or that Cat from dinamyte headdy), but I hate the "americanization" that they made for kirby in the 90s and 2000s in the covers or the commercials, same for klonoa in the wii version(which changed him to a "cooooooool" teenager) and Ristar.
