As a teen boy in the mid 70's and fledgling hairstylist, I discovered this Goddess. I started doing research ...this was way before internet of course. I was fascinated about the process of not only her hair but of everything, the extreme hard work she had to endure. She was trained at a young age to dance, and dance she could! Very shy by nature, it's almost a miracle that she become this creature of such fire and power on the screen.
For me she was and still is Hollywood No1. She had everything what every woman should have- legs, body, face, hair, appeal, talent....and what a legs!!!! My dearest actress all my life.
+1966marlon IMO only Lucille Ball compares to her. BTW, did you know Lucille started her career as a pinup girl? Not joking! Google it. She was a goddess!!!
I don't like her legs. With all the dance and she was having very tin skinny legs. I prefer strong legs and she was having a lot of surgeries to look that way; but great dancer and talented yes, no doubt about it.
She didn't have any surgery done to look like that. The only surgery she ever had in all her life - a nose job - was done when she was over 50 years old. All she had done by the time this video was shot was lose weight and have her hair dyed. Just that. Her legs were short, but since she was young and thin when this video was made, they look thinner. But if you watch her in Gilda or Pal Joey, or even in Affair In Trinidad, you will see how short and thick her legs were, and how thick her hips were - that only drove men crazier.
Blog Poltrona R she had a surgery to take off some hair from her front. And to slim her face so she looked more "Eastern". That's what they used to do with many. She couldn't even talk it was another woman who did the voice of Rita. Look at how she was when she started she look even like Hindi in some pics. I don't think she was ugly but the one you see on that vid. Is the result of many surgeries she was having the body and talent but not the face. But they did a good job.
Her speaking voice was 100% hers. She lipsynced another woman's voice when she SANG. That was because her stupid manager thought she couldn't sing. Look it up.
What a marvel, what a spectacle, I'm speechless in the face of so much talent, that gorgeous woman, there are no more women like Rita Hayworth, she was unique !!
Rita Hayworth the beautiful and talented dancer, costume by Jean Louis, music and lyrics by Jule Stein and Sammy Cahn, outstanding choreography by Jack Cole, plus the perfect technicolor venue all add up to one of the best production numbers in a musical. Can't take your eyes off Rita for one second. Simply captivating.
Rita is number one with me, too. Just a gorgeous gal who could really dance, Astair's favorite partner, I think. Just because these fine entertainers are passed on doesn't mean they won't be back when we are restored to our most beautiful selves. I think Rita was a good person who will be there on that day.
I love old movies, classic film, and the great stars of yesteryear. When I think of Rita Hayworth, the words that come to me are beauty, talent, and just naturally sexy. She truly was WOMAN. RIP.
Agree. My 2 favorite actresses from the day although Maureen aged much better. I guess Rita wasn't a singer or never given the chance. Still she had screen presence and was gorgeous. My mouth still falls open when I see Maureen O'Hara 's first scene in the Quiet Man. That look!
Rita Hayworth was dubbed by Martha Mears on most of the songs in the movie. -“Tonight and Every Night” Martha Mears -“You Excite Me” Martha Mears -“The Boy I Left Behind” Martha Mears -“What Does an English Girl Think of a Yank?” Martha Mears -“Anywhere” by Janet Blair
1940's Hollywood had many beautiful faces--Lana, Ingrid, Gene, Ava--but only one was equally beautiful, and musically gifted--Rita Hayward. She is one of most favorite, and I never tire of seeing her movies.
Fantastic! I remember being bowled over by her energy when this number came up in _Tonight and Every Night_. No other dance sequence in that movie, an otherwise mediocre one imho, could compare. So moved, I looked it up and learned this is considered one of Ms. Hayworth's finest onscreen dance performances, if not the finest. I can understand why.
Damn she dances so well and in high heels! Ever since she was young she was involved in dancing-specifically Spanish dances. Plus, her Dad is from Spain and was a Spanish dancer, that is why dancing comes naturally to her. Margarita Cansino, her real name before she changed it, was a superb Spanish dancer! One of the first famous Hispanic movie actresses, shame she had to hide her ethnicity for her to get good roles and not be typecast!
@dogma71 me too! I'm Afro-Hispanic and it makes me so glad that Rita, who is of Spanish descent, made it big time in Hollywood back in the 40's and 50's during a hard time for poeple of color.
Actually Rita was 3 months pregnant when she filmed this scene in 1944!!! Her baby Rebecca Wells, (Orson's kid) would be born in early 1945. After a brief maternity leave, Rita went back to Columbia Pictures and began filming Gilda.
I'd love to hear what woman of color in that day you think could've outdanced rita hayworth and had the face to pull it off. Remember, Rita was not the choreographer on most of her movies so if you have a problem with the style of the dance you take it up with the choreographer. The scene is fine and exciting actually. There were people that danced as well but I don't think any better...different maybe but not better. Sex appeal is a big part of dance and acting.
If you take a look at what samba was all about in the forties (Carmem Miranda, remember?), you´ll see that there´s nothing ridiculous at it - except your comment...
"She was my favourite partner", said Fred Astaire. But people here that are saying that Rita does not have rhythm probably don´t know who mister Astaire is. And to say that violins are ridiculous... well, a lot of brazilian singers of the forties had violins in their sambas, including Carmen Miranda BEFORE her Hollywood chapter. Obviously, you don´t see violins in Rio´s samba school. But its another kind of show.
It’s understandable that people like trying out different things for a change, but watching this scene of Rita Hayworth with a long clip on pony tail didn’t work. Rita’s usual shoulder length hair was perfection. Especially with the occasional flip:)
It's hard to believe in this sequence that Rita was three months pregnant! This is truly a cute movie, apparently due for DVD release in late 2008 (along with several other of Rita's hard to find Columbia films).
reading her bio by barbara leamng, any rita fan should check it out. lots of interesting things. electrolosis, abuse. etc. her life wasnt as great as it seems in the movies
