A sample from recording studio sessions of Ritchie Valens 1958 big hit "La Bamba"; where we can hear some conversation.
This is from "The Lost Tapes" cd.
The first takes were in slower tempo (at 1:42 we can clearly notice it).
At 3:23 begins "take 5" and doesn´t have the famous solo guitar yet.
"La Bamba" is ranked number 345 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" (it´s the only song on the list not sung in English). According to history, this is the lineup:
Buddy Clark: string bass
Carol Kaye: rhythm guitar
Earl Palmer: drums
Ernie Freeman: piano
Rene Hall: Danelectro guitar
Ritchie Valens: vocals, guitar

Carol Kaye must have been startlingly gorgeous and intimidating in those days. She knew a hell of alot about guitar playing (she's on guitar here not bass), and she was one hell of a hipster, having played jazz in South Central, as a girl guitar player. That's fairly tough!

Recorded right at the corner of Vine Street and Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood at Gold Star Studios 1958. Recorded at a time when artists REALLY made their own music LIVE. Now days everyone comes in, sings their part and leaves. Most of the artists today never even meet the people who play on their records. So sad.

Hearing this song take shape in the studio, is one of the seminal moments in the history of rock and roll! The intro and the first verse are a synthesis of rock, Tex-Mex, and Americana in all it’s youthful, exuberant glory...thanks Richie

Richie Valens (Mexican-American) adapted the song "La Bamba" into a rock&roll style from the Mexican folk song "La Bamba" which was already being played in Veracruz, Mexico long before he came out with this version. Awesome!

It's fascinating to hear the pre-take banter on these iconic recordings - from an early Presley "waz 'appening' during a control board fuck-up on, I think, 'Rip It Up' - to Peter Green's "Get it wrong again and I'll smash yer face in" to Mick Fleetwood on 'Need Your Love So Bad'.

This kid was on the brink of something so special. His work rate was incredible for someone so young & I shudder to think how much more he would have shaped rock & modern blues music if the accident would not have happened. The same goes for Buddy...21 years old & still one of the most talented songwriters of the 20th century.
