This exquisite piece, which forms part of the cycle Lokale Musik (investigates “the manifold relationships between landscape and music”), is replete with metaphorical and paradoxical elements. The piece explores the concept of returning to and embracing one's roots, integrating together cultivated concert music with the rough folk tradition, also combining Cage’s chance matrixes with Feldman’s lyricism.
Zimmermann's two main concepts, "Non-Centered Tonality" and "Introverted Virtuosity," are fundamental to the piece. Non-Centered Tonality is defined as a system without functional or hierarchical relationships between tones. Introverted Virtuosity is the idea that the performer's effort is not perceived by the audience, creating the illusion of simplicity. These concepts emerge from nature and memory and are translated via two meta-instruments: the metals and skins, which represent two distinct identities.
Divided in three chapters that I called:
“Marching band coming from far announcing the initial clearings”
“Waltz of Deforestation”
“Lamento of the trees”
“Deforestation: Step in human consciousness from dominating nature to dominating nature. A higher level of consciousness (?) leads to the use of nature (now at the latest to exploit it!)“
