My favorite part about SSL from these clips is that people are much more free to use character concepts they can't think of full movesets for due to the source material not giving much to work with (like Metaton and Wii Play Tank), thus leading to SSL having some rather outlandish characters even by RoA standards
@@Zetta330 I'd say the numbers are relatively fair! I have some characters like Tomongus and Tomo that took about 30-ish hours total but also some characters like Callie/Siren who took 60+. I actually streamed my entire process for my SSL character and it took about 20 hours (including art/animating, playtesting, and programming) and that's while being distracted and taking breaks so your numbers are pretty fair. I'd honestly say my 20 hours is on the higher end too
From my experience, some characters can even take, like, less than 10 hours to finish, depending on how simple the design concept is. Cubitt took me 2 days to finish, and it was probably around 8-10 hours of work in total?
Yes!! I think SSL is an amazing place to experiment with basic concepts or ideas that can potentially evolve into a full rivals character in the future! I myself have actually implemented a few ideas I made for SSL Funghee into some of my upcoming regular WS characters so it's certainly not out of the question!
As someone who plays Rocket League, and knows SSL as “Super Sonic Legend” (The highest rank of the game), it’s weird hearing it in another game prominently as well, lmao
@@turtlehub2731 it would be so sick if someone pulled it off! However, I did think it would also be perfect if someone turned the Octane into a Buddy that drives around the stage and follows you, maybe even does cool aerial movement and uses its boost to try and follow you in the air! And to top it all off, every time you’d taunt or a stock is taken from you or the other players, that little Octane starts spamming various quick chats from RL.
Stuff like this makes me wish it was easier to sort and search characters in game.. Maybe the rivals devs could make this its own official mode some day?
if you do Extra -> Steam Workshop -> Characters you can press "C" to select a character to organize and the "Backspace" to alphabetically order all of your characters, you can also create folders (they're really more like dividers) by pressing "Backspace" without selecting a character to start organizing characters. Most SSL devs are slowly starting to all name their character's "SSL _____" so a lot of the SSL characters will be organized together that way!
@@FungiWizard oh i didn't know about the alphabetical order option! that'll definitely help me though i still think more sorting options should be added, like a sort by creator, being able to move more than one character at a time and a search bar
I thought about making a ssl inspired character like 2-3 month ago because the move list limitations seem fun to play around. So happy to see someone else having the same idea. I will most likely make a char some time in the future (maybe Glumpi ssl?)
honestly, super smash land didnt *need* to only have jump and attack, specials couldve fit in by moving jump to up on the d-pad but i kinda like that its only one attack.. kinda
Gameboy was really limited so Dan Furnace (Pun intended don't be salty) wanted to make a concept if smash was for the GB. But if they had tilts and stuff I don't think it would fit for an legit gb game
If I download SSL characters and stages and normal workshop characters and stages and choose random workshop character/stage will it select from both? Is there anyway to keep those separate so I don’t accidentally match up an SSL character with a regular one?
I dare to bet that someone wil make an SSL ronald, also i already have a SSL mario before SSL became a popular thing, also also what i like to do sometimes is is mix rivals & SSL with each, i know that SSL content is low tier (mid tier at most but its something really rare to get to mid tier) but i just like making it either easyer or harder like this so idc
@@xtra3678 for that first that i'm sure someone will make an OP character like ronald in the SSL style & for the other thing since the SSL styled characters are in the same category as regular character & same thing for stages, so because of that i guess i can use both normal stuff & SSL stuff in 1 battle, so that will either give me an advantage by having parry & stuff while the SSL opponent doesn't or a disadvantage by not having that while the opponent does & because of lacking parry & stuff, even the top tier SSL characters are top tier against other SSL characters, but low tier, mid tier at most against normal characters, boss battle for example, you can fight SSL galeom as normal sandbert & because you have everything rivals has its a bit easyer, but let's say you fight the boss (A.K.A lvl 1) version of Hikaru, then that's harder because you lack parry & dodging & stuff
@@xtra3678 P.S. i'm doing both that & the other way around & you're right about that they are balanced in their own meta, so you're not supposed to play them against (or fight them as) non SSL character, but i do it anyway because again, i litherally don't care at all
Play ssl characters against each other. Playing them against other non ssl ws characters/ base cast really isn't fun. That's part of the fun for ssl, because it's really it's own meta that's entirely self contained
