I just found out that the actress who played her in Riven, Sheila Goold, passed away in July of 2017. Such a loss - Catherine was one of my favorite characters in this game. RIP...
I love the Catherine character. She is so mysterious and enhanced by the beautiful compelling face of Sheila Goold. I was so sad to learn she had died and there was never a reason why at such a young age.
Everything from the costumes to the details in the journals and the surroundings and puzzles matched so well to a beautiful story nay... experience. Cause I was there folks, I was right there... So immersive and thorough. I don't believe there will ever be another game quite like Riven.
All the Rivan music is in my huge Spotify playlist I always listen to. I had allays thought of the Catherine's freedom bit as just another good bit of atmospheric background music from a series full of it. But yesterday it hit me how awesome this track is. Years after I'd forgotten the dialog it still captures perfectly the desperate hesitationlessness of someone released into dark but necessary action.
One of my absolute favorite pieces of video game music. I love how the synth piano stings and percussion kick in after she says, "You did it," like something is awakening in her akin to a sense of hope or purpose.
I always loved that little detail where Catherine destroys the wires from the elevator just to make sure you don't go back upstairs and explore her room. They could've easily just made it so the elevator just inexplicably stopped working, but they thought ahead and added that in. Makes me wonder if the remake will let you be able to enter that place without her.
