I've hung my head in shame ever since I killed my Toyo built Rivendell Rambouillet when I forgot it was on my roof rack. Until I recently found a BEAUTIFUL replacement frame on BikeList. So I stripped all of the fancy classic road bike parts from my custom built Ellis road bike and created the most beautiful road bike ever built. And you get to watch me do it!

I picked up a blue Rambouillet locally in June of 2023 with the standard Rivendell parts build from around 2004. It is in pretty much immaculate shape with only a few very minor paint scrapes. It is my favorite bike ever and I’ve been through a few over my riding years and I am 69 now. I am so happy to have one now.

@@bellavia5nothing really other than the fact that they make bikes for people who feel the bike industry has left them behind. I have six bikes and none of them came from a bike shop. There are zero bikes I want to own available at 99 percent of shops. They offer some models with geometry that you can’t find anywhere else. Now if they just offered disc brakes they would be the greatest bike company on earth.

@@davidross8233 I don't feel left behind but I do think the industry has done things that make no sense. Overly complicated tube shaping. Seat stays that are positioned far below the juncture where the top tube intersects the seat tube. This is the MAIN gripe I have with the industry because it makes NO sense whatever .Bike shops will tell you that it's done to create a tighter rear triangle . Yes but a mountain bike does'nt need a real tight real triangle -it needs that nexus supported to buttress against a riders weight landing on that area. Threadless headsets and hollow tech bottom brackets . Not too sure about those. Disc brakes are the ONLY worthwhile thing I've seen in the last 20 years. Of course -we both know that these things are concocted in order to sell more bikes.. Speaking of disc brakes -why don't you install a conversion set up? Sacrilege? Another thing worthwhile I noticed is the "toe-in" positioning of brake levers on road bikes. Creates better alignment of the lower and upper arm .

If you want to find the coolest bikes in any given bike shop, look past the rows and rows of expensive carbon frames, and find the staff bike parikng! That’s where you can sometimes encounter gems like this one. Truly a bike nerd’s frame. I’ll have this on in the background while I try to get my Surly ready for my upcoming trip!

WOW!!!!! What a gorgeous bike!!! One day, I need to replace my ‘83 Nashbar I had from 1989-1997. I put over 8,000 miles on it, a good part of those miles were from working as a bike messenger in Houston. I can think of no better frame to use as a replacement than a Rivendell.

At the same time these were available I was working in a shop and I got a custom tig frame with fancier components because I was able to get a discount. The IF Club Racer is a great bike and I'm running 32's with fenders and a triple so all good. I do look at that Riv like the girl I never asked out. I'm so glad you saw the light with the front brake cable routing. I was getting worried...

I have to say it was gratifying watching a professional have trouble with those Honjo fenders. I remember getting to the point of tears trying to get a set to fit on a Rivendell Atlantis years ago - turns out I had ordered the wrong size and they were never going to fit right. But once I'd drilled holes and scratched them trying to fit, I couldn't return them either. Good times! That is a beautiful ride, and I hope you get many years of joy out of it!

another dynamite build!…have you seen the velo orange hammered silver fenders?…i wish they made them in 29” for my bare aluminum frame…thanks for the tip on cranking down on brakes to set shoes…you probably don’t have the room to use leather washers on fender connections, but they are great for relieving little annoying ticking sounds that amplify in metal fenders…even though they look bad ass, i think the tight fitting fenders are going to give you hell in keeping them aligned… hope she rides as well as she looks…

Need to get a Sheldon Nut from Problem Solvers for those fenders. I sometimes forget that, outside of the Northwest, even extremely experienced mechanics aren't doing twice-daily fender installations. It's simple enough to make your own by gently running a 6mm tap through the back end of a recessed nut, but nothing beats the real thing.

A while ago, I bought a 5mm fender hole punch from Cyclus Tools to make those fender holes much easier. No issues so far punching through either aluminum or stainless-steel fenders.

I watched a video the other day when you said that you normally put the tyre logo at the valve, but should probably put the tyre pressure information at the valve,, I agree with putting the pressure at the valve, also I always start at the valve and finnish at the valve when changing tyres,, I'm old and been doing it for a long long time, hope you agree,works for me 👍

Great project - great parts. Noted the heat-treated NITTO bars (46 cm width noodles?) The fender fitting without checking the tire clearance - ohBABY! - broken reamer should have told ya!

I have a saluki bought in 2005. I also use bar end friction shifting w 9 gears. Use 38 -42 rene herse 650b tires. Love this bike.

I have one just like this. I think that I spent maybe 3 or 4 hours mounting Honjos on my Saluki. I can recommend the Sheldon fender nuts from Problem solvers. They work as advertised. I have some Velo Orange fenders for my Rambouillet but I have never put them on. They are pre drilled and the 2 sets I have mounted went on great. The Honjos are more substantial though.

When you drilled that fender, first thing i rought was if you put the tab towards the seat tube side maybe the hole would have lined up. Also, if you're drilling thin non ferrous metals, you can use brad point bits meant for wood. The point keeps it from wandering and the cutting edges cut the thin stock cleanly. Try it, you'll be surprised!!

This is my first video of yours I got to watch! So enjoyable. I just got a new-to-me Rivendell Bleriot that is built up in the same style as yours. It was a consolation gift from having my atlantis chainstays crack and losing my crust lightning bolt to a car crash/ fainting while riding. I am shocked at how well the Bleriot feels. I mean, I am not surprised given how smooth my clem L and atlantis are/were. but with the lighting tubing its WILD! Enjoy your bike! It's a beaut!

I seem to recall my Romulus (Cantilevered Rambouillet) would only fit a 28 with fenders. This used to called out on the Riv website

Tektro R200 brake levers are the same as Cane Creek SCR-5. There are some available on eBay as I type this, but only with black hoods.

I'm thinking, if you moved the rear fender upper mount to the back side of the frame mount, the bottom hole would have lined up. Awesome job though!

Shimano makes a mid reach brake caliper available in silver and black. Just installed a set on my new frame where the fork wouldnt work with short reach caliper.
