Thanks for sharing. All these wrong ways on how to cross a river might help others making better choices. To be fair, there are a couple of "done right" in this collection....
Over the years I have met only few motor riders, this video exactly shows what the trouble is with these two wheeled mobiles.... Wow, you are very susceptible to rocks and muddy floors. I don't ever want to dross a river on a bike, for sure. I just go by Land Rover.... ;-) And have GREAT respect to cyclist and motorists. (Have helped a few crossing when I could)
Guys, I love you ... this is sooooo cool ... two thumbs up ... people giving negative comments tend to forget these are brick heavy bikes, top heavy too, with c.g. probably in the neighborhood of handlebar height ... riding "blind" on submerged stones , which are slippery as hell, and then you have the river current ... you need balls of steel, to try fording, knowing that if it goes wrong, you are in the middle of nowhere, with flooded carbs ( KTM has 2) , and wet pants ... ask me to try fording a small creek in the desert, on a lightweight 2 stroke endure bike, I'll probably go for it ... but in ICELAND, dude, it is a whole different story !!
Thanks for sharing this! This video made me change my mind before I left. I eventually chose my 400 XR in place of my heavy 750cc Africa Twin. Good choice: last month was extremely wet in Iceland. I even managed to drown the bike with water up to the saddle (air intake)! :-/ Seeing this video again makes me less frightened now, but I admire even more people that ride in the icelandic highlands with big bikes.
I drowned my 950SE two summers ago in a deep swamp in Northern Ontario. It was only my third month with the bike. Heartbreaking. Took 10-12 oil changes to get all the water out of the oil system. Water crossings are fun -- till they aren't.
mmhm.... you didn't cross rivers before, right? it's a matter of technique & weight - that's why I prefer an LC4. Been stuck in an icelandic river once., a 4WD driver helped me.
