James Robbins feeder fishes for barbel on the River Wye at Hereford.
The video, thanks for our friends at tackle brand Shakespeare, gives tips relating to maggot feeder fishing on powerful rivers like the Wye and the rigs/tackle required.
It's shot during the winter whilst the river is high and water temperature is low but the video includes plenty of action with hard fighting barbel up to 6 lb caught for the camera.

Before you put a hook length on use a rolling lead to find the deepest spot. That’s where the fish will be.

These days anglers consider putting barbel in a keepnet mishandling them, and difficult to justify when not in a match - there's no need to show them off as a trophy at the end of a session when we can simply unhook them, rest them in the landing net, photograph/weigh and return them (in that order).

Does Shakespeare have some fine, tune, heavy feeder rod? This brand is likeable, but I just met with low level rods....

So you keep your rod high to keep as much line out of the water as possible, then pay out a massive bow of line into the river? I see

You want the line near the feeder to be pointing downstream because that means you need less lead on the feeder to hold bottom. You want the line near the rod to be out of the water otherwise the tip will be bent double and you won’t see the bites.

Yes I do, I also use just enough lead to hold bottom, no more. I'll alter my hooklengths as well, between a foot to 4 foot.

i know couldnt they get someone to come round to every angler every ten mins or so and weigh what they have so far and just keep doing that, then the fish would be netted for 10 mins max unless you are livebaiting the use of a keepnet is pretty pointless, its like you arent fishing for the enjoyment but to add to a score card

It's not even a competition, so why the need to drop these lovely fish in a keepnet is beyond me. We've seen the fish, caught and landed. Barbel need a short time to recover after the fight they put up, so dropping them straight into a keepnet who knows whether they have recovered or just gone belly up in the end of the net. We barbel anglers have all witnessed barbel floating by on the river, belly up, sometime or other. I really enjoy James's videos generally but, sometimes the fishes welfare seems secondary to the actual catching of.
