River - It's the End

I can’t believe I am writing this.
I have some sad news to reveal to you all. I had planned to make a vlog to explain everything, but to be honest I cannot face it. I kept putting if off so you guys will have to just read it.
I have come to the very difficult decision to retire River from ridden work at 6 years old. Over the last year we became aware of some shoeing/ foot issues stemming from her 'flat feet' (mildly negative pedal bone angle). This is really the beginning of it all. I noticed sometimes she would take an un-level
step under saddle. Although with some help from the farrier this improved and I continued to work her carefully. About 3 months ago she bumped her left knee somehow, but after a few weeks this was better. I then noticed a slight intermittent right fore lameness under saddle after the left knee had healed. I was worried it was her feet being sore again so she went to the vet. This time after nerve blocks she did not block sound to the feet, which she previously had. This really worried me. After more investigation she blocked sound to the suspensory region. After further scans the vet revealed she had abnormal suspensory pattern in both ligaments. The vet thinks she probably had this issue for a long time, and because it was bi-lateral (on both front legs) and she never showed any symptoms, it was almost impossible to detect! She always loved her work and was willing. We also discovered mild changes in both navicular bones, which is not uncommon in experienced jumping horses. However, River is not an established jumping horse, she has done very little work compared to most 6 year olds. The vets (and myself) feel she is best suited to a life with low level work loads. She would most likely be very difficult to keep sound if pushed to do higher level competitions. So for this reason combined with the suspensory issues, I have decided it is in her best interest to retire from ridden work. My goals for her were not low level, I had hoped one day she would be my 1.30m plus horse. I do not think it is fair to push her when we already see signs her body would not cope with harder work in the future.
So you may ask, but what now? I do not wish to sell her, (especially in Dubai) to some one wishing to do low level work. I would be worried someone would see her talent and push her and her body too hard and she would end up broken. I have decided to keep her. I cannot bear to sell her. I cannot describe how much I love this horse. She has been a pleasure to work with and I really feel such a connection with her. I have owned her since she was a rising 3 year old, and broken and produced her myself. So River in the coming months with retire to holland to a my friends beautiful breeding stables, where she can live a happy and natural life. River will hopefully have a foal next year! She will have her own genetic foal first, and depending how that goes she may continue to have her own foals or instead will have foals via embryo transfer; meaning I plan to buy quality eggs and semen from other proven and sound show jumping horses. This way, with this plan, I can ensure River lives a good quality life and she can still have a purpose. Meaning years down the line I can produce some of her own foals myself and hopefully have talented horses for the future for myself! I am sad and happy in some ways at the same time, although I am sad she will not be the show jumping horse I had a planned her to be, I am happy she will still be my horse for the rest of her life. I am excited about the prospect of visiting her in holland and seeing her become a mother. I know she will be an excellent mother. In the future when I eventually move back to Ireland from Dubai, I would plan to take River home where she can live with Boo. This is of of course many many years away, and she will remain in Holland with my friend until that stage.. but its an exciting prospect.
Please enjoy this video I made in tribute to my wonderful mare River Dancer.
I love you River.
Just because it is the end, doesn’t mean it is over.

Your understanding and caring nature that you bring into your riding is not seen very often in the horse world. The decision you have made is a hard one but you have put your horse before yourself and in many years to come you will definitely reap the benefits. I love that you don't push her up. And I love that you don't sell her so no one else can push her up. I can't watch a horse being broken. I thought no one would understand this kind of problem, because at my old stable I saw a jumping horse being pushed up and winning, but I also had to experience him having such problems that he had to be put down. There are just too many people that want the money and don't care about their horses. And you're not one of them. Thank you. It means a lot to me.

One of the absolute best examples of a true horsewoman and someone who knows horses. Everything happens for a reason. It's unfortunate River can't continue in her ridden work, but it's exciting to think for her future, too, with embryo transfers and mothering foals. Thank you for putting your horse first, as always. All the best wishes ❤️

@fourhoovesmadeofmagic.ella6240

Lucky lucky River to not be sold off to an uncertain future. Its hard to describe that feeling of just loving a horse so deeply. Ive been there myself. Im a vet by profession and have had one of my horses through 19 years break his back while he reared with me and flipped over. I actually managed to save him with the help of the best colleagues, former teachers and well known vets from my own field and he is now completely pain free but will never be able to carry me again. I drove him through 3 countries to take him home to my childhood home where he and I lived with my parents before I left for uni and took him with me. He recognized my mom and dad and his old stable and he now lives a happy life as a 28 year old pet, who's purpose in life is to snatch as many of my mother roses as he can reach - and to bring up my new foal and teach him all the mischievous acts he knows. I got my first pony as a birth present when I was 3 months old and we, and later my now retired 28 old, grew up with me keeping my first pony for life even though I eventually grew to big for her. I put her to sleep when we were both 31 years old. Im counting on my 28 to have a couple of more good years in him to just enjoy life.

This right here shows that you are a fantastic horsewoman. Not many people would retire a horse this talented just because it is in the horse's best interest. Well done Lauren. It is a shame that biology produced a horse that is so uniquely talented but also gave it a body that would make it unable for that talent to be fulfilled. I'm sure she will be a great mother and well done for such a mature and right decision in River's best interest!

@evitare8714
@evitare8714 7 лет назад
So many people sell their unsound horses and say it is because they "cannot afford" an unsound horse, and go on to buy a sound one. What they really "cannot afford" is giving up a sport and their own aspirations/ego for the welfare of their loyal animal and friend. They "cannot afford" money they see as "wasted". To the animal, your money is not wasted. What may seem like a great, relaxed home could easily become a horrific nightmare for a horse. In reality, unless you sell to a close family member, anything can happen. Friendships can come to an end. Ignorance can lead to neglect, selfishness can lead to mistreatment, financial issues can occur, personal goals can cause the horse to be sold on, lack of experience can cause mistakes in the care. All of that is out of your control when you sell the horse. You have no control over what will happen to that animal when it leaves your care. Think: If your beloved friend was not worth enough to you to care for into his retirement, why should he be worth that to another person with less emotional investment? Even a close "friend" of yours may not see the horse as you do, and as friendships fall apart or slowly drift apart with time, your horse will be alive. He has years of life left in him, and every day will increase the risk of the "great situation" that you sold him to being temporary. Keep your horses, sound or unsound. They work for you, sound or unsound, and you owe them just as much.

River has been taken care of so well and is so lucky to have a steady home. Turn this situation into a positive one and let River live a life of peace, she could still be an amazing liberty horse! Keep on working hard!

1000% yes. I can't thank you enough for making all of the proper decisions (including breeding via embryo transfer) for River. You are the ideal horse owner and I wish everyone was as caring and responsible as you are in this situation.

I'm literally in tears, I have been following you now for quite some years and I absolutely adore the way you work with horses and it feels so unfair that such thing happens to you and your horses. But I'm sure River will give birth to some exceptional foals and you are going to make the best out of it.

Oh Lauren.. I'm so sorry to hear this :( you've worked so hard with River and produced a truly beautiful horse. I remember seeing you and River out showing when she was 3 or so and you were still at Writtle, she is really a credit to all your hard work. As hard as this must be for you the prospect of a River baby is VERY exciting and I don't doubt that you'll one day own a very special foal. All the best to River in her new adventures in Holland xx

So happy that you are keeping her! My heart nearly ripped in to two when I saw the title and whilst I was reading the description. Watching the video had made tears run down my face; but I'm so happy that you have decided to keep her. I wouldn't know where River would even be without you (:

Girl, your one hell of a rider to start with but this action just shows your also one hell of a horseman. You are doing the one thing that half of the equestrian world would ignore. Retiring your lil mare at just age 6 for her wellbeing is amazing. I really hope one day y'all can compete together again

This is so devastating for you both, such a talented mare. Massive respect to you for making this decision and putting the horse first, not your plans. You did the right thing. I'm sure River will remain a happy horse and it's great you have exciting plans for her and yourself which I hope all go as you plan :) xx

I'm sad and happy as well but I am so so so glad you made the decision that you made. My mare died two weeks ago and knowing how awful her legs were at the end (she was 26) and she had some other bone decease where I don't know what it's called in English, I am so happy to see someone as successful as you put your horses happiness and health over more work, which she would be perfect at but in pain. I am so honoured to call myself your follower! I really really am and I admire your work very very much!

It's so sad she can't compete. She is a very nice mover and so beautiful. Glad she has someone that puts her needs first though. She is a very lucky horse.

This is such sad news, River has so much talent! I’ve been a fan of yours from the beginning, I loved watching you and Boo, then you and River. I have even more respect for you now, deciding to keep River even though you can’t ride her anymore. That’s amazing. She is so lucky to have ended up with you!

I'll keep it brief(!) - Lauren I am so sorry this was the end of her ridden career, but I have the hugest amount of respect for you as a rider, owner and you tuber for the way you have put your horse first, found a positive purpose for her, and just generally been damn amazing. Best of luck to your gorgeous River Dancer, she'll be an amazing mum xx

Omg, no! I definitely think you made the right decision, and you're doing the right thing by putting her first. She'll be an amazing mother, and I can't imagine how difficult that decision had to be. Her lateral work has always been the most amazing thing to watch... we'll miss you, River! Have fun in Holland!
