I had the pleasure of meeting up with Alex and Gordon from the fishing Channel, Angling 360, during this fishing trip. They to had an awesome session on the river, catching some amazing fish. please check out their channel below.
‪@angling360‬
In this episode I am back on the river Nith in Dumfries and Galloway, fishing for winter grayling. Grayling is fast becoming my favourite winter species to catch as it is just simply the prettiest fish In the stream. This was the most productive grayling fishing trip to date. catching some wonderful fish all over 2 pounds.
I started the session euro nymphing but conditions were not right for me and I very quickly changed methods. Trotting the float downstream with the controlled drift using the centre pin real.
Many thanks for watching 👍

@PiscatorUK-Fishing Год назад
@@sioll5637 I’ve only just recently started using the centre pin and just love it for the trotting. The fixed spool certainly has its place in certain conditions and I wouldn’t travel without it when I’m trotting the float, just in case. Tight lines buddy👍

What a great video you made . Can you please tell me about the rod and real that you are using ? I my country of Canada I have never seen that style of rod and real and it looks very interesting to fish with thanks ...
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing 11 месяцев назад
Hi Darren the rod is specifically used for float fishing in the Uk and the reel is called a centre pin reel and I would say is predominantly usued in the Uk also. The reel is designed for this type of river fishing which is called trotting. The flow of the river carries the float downstream, at the same time the line comes of the reel at the same speed as the flow of the river. All centre pin reels have very smooth bearing systems. you can also put your hand on the spool to slow the rate of downstream drift holding your bait in the kill zone longer while your bait still looks natural to the fish. In my opinion the control of the float is superior to a fixed spool reel as the line comes off a fixed spool much quicker and tends to sag onto the water which can also affect the drift. Please see some links below. Of the rod and reel I use. I’m not sponsored or have affiliates with these brands. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/drennan-red-range-13ft-float-fishing-rod www.anglingdirect.co.uk/ngt-dynamic-centrepin-reel

Awesome stuff! Had a few clonker grayling when salmon fishing rapids this year. I thought a couple of them were grilse for a while. When they use their sail in the current they put up a hell of a scrap. Great viewing!
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Год назад
Many thanks James, a few anglers have told me about catching grayling when salmon fishing, which really intrigued me as salmon flies are quite bit larger than say nymphs that normally catch grayling. The next time I’m nymphing I might try streamers.
@jamesjames4652
@jamesjames4652 Год назад
I was fishing surface lures, riffle hitching, in the faster currents because of the hot low water conditions this year. Only a minority of salmon anglers try riffle hitching for salmon in the UK. I can tell you hand on heart Douglas that it is a killer tactic for big predatory grayling! Obviously you wouldn't need salmon gear to try it for grayling. They jump on the lure like a pike. Very aggressive!
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Год назад
Thanks for the info James, definitely some I will try in the future
@jamesjames4652
@jamesjames4652 Год назад
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Riffle hitching is worth a look as even many fly fisherman don't know how it works.. It's a bit left of field, like the bombarda.
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Год назад
Hi James, I’ve been looking into the hitch, does the hitch stay on the fly/lure when the fish takes or does it slip off. I’ll probably up my tippet as I normally nymph with 6X

You okay Douglas do you have to stand in the river as it must be cold 🥶. Can you not catch in the dry on the shore.
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Год назад
At certain spots you can fish from the bank but you can cover more fish by wading. It is cold mate but worth it. Thanks for watching mate👍

Hi, I was wondering what the average length of trot? when the bites came. Iam guessing quite long.Nice vid. Cheers.Atb
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Год назад
Thanks for commenting much appreciated. To be honest each run and at certain times of day the bites came at all different lengths during the trot. One fish would be at the end of the run 50yards and the next 2 fish would be 2-3 rod lengths.

I've float fished the rivers Garry and Tummel in Perthshire with maggots and worms and never caught a grayling, though I have caught them in English rivers. How widespread are they in Scotland ?
@PiscatorUK-Fishing
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Год назад
There are many rivers in Scotland with grayling but probably not as widespread as Englandshire. Nith, Annan, Clyde, Tieth and Tweed to name a few are probably the most abundant with good catches of larger grayling @2lb +, thanks for commenting mate👍
