May I know when did you shoot this video? I used to fish on Taff regularly with great results but then big flood came followed by great restrictions :( I heard from locals that fishing hasn't been so good last year. Hence this question. Ps Guys you are doing great job promoting fishing in Wales.

We shot this on 28th September 2021. The lower Taff hasn't been as good for trout since the big floods. From Pontypridd all the way to Merthyr Tydfil, the trout fishing is still excellent.

@@cerithomas5465 The end of season is usually the best! I'm glad you said it's still worth coming. I live in London so for me it's not a short trip. Ta

Superb quality of wild trout - better even than the English chalk streams which I fish. However, things are changing. More and more anglers are practising catch and release so the keepers are progressively reducing the stocking numbers to promote the wild populations. I've noticed a distinct improvement over the last couple of years and it would be great if the places I fish produce 'wildies' like this in the future.

Absolutely! Wild fish and C&R is the future. The Taff is a shining example of what can happen with the right management.

I have indeed made a short appearance on Carl & Alex's channel, my name's Brett though - although I've been called worse than brat 😂👍

@@TheFishist I used to fish for trout using UL gear. This changed when I had a couple 60+ fish on my hook. It was too much of anxiety and uncertainty for me to handle :) Thin line, lack of backbone in the rod. So I moved back up to 8-10lb rod and 12lb line. How do you find handling big trout on this little rod?

After a few years away from resevoir fishing (lure bashing) im looking to start again on the river as i live right by the Taff (Abercanaid) I was thinking of a WF 4 line/rod 9ft or would a smaller size rod be better? or maybe 5 weight?
@FishingInWales
@FishingInWales 2 года назад
Hi Paul, a 9ft #4 rod would be perfect, stick with that. It can be used for dry fly, duo and nymph fishing with a French leader

Do you ever upstream worm? The reason i ask is that Czech nymphying uses no fly line and uses heavily weighted flies to hit bottom - the only difference i see is a spinning reel and a worm as bait, both cast are upstream and use weigh to get to the bottom. I prefer a fly rod to upstream worm, so from my viewpoint they are so close...its only about what is on the end that the trout will accept that makes a technique successful. After that it is a state of mind for the worm on the other end!
@FishingInWales
@FishingInWales 2 года назад
Indeed modern 'Euronymphing' is very similar to the old ways of free-lining a worm upstream, a forgotten skill really. A fly is much better though! No need to dig worms up, and no risk of deep hooking fish.
