"'The Void from Which No Sound Escapes' is a song that was put together pretty early in the writing process for 'The Work'. It features some familiar sounds that people have come to expect from our band, while also highlighting some new sounds and textures that we've never experimented with before." - Brody Uttley
@@nightwolf2666 well if thats so, that means both these bands from Reading, PA: Rivers of Nihil and Black Crown Initiate are under played American bands ..
Rivers of Nihil is one of those bands that I don’t instantly appreciate. Don’t get me wrong, I liked this song when I first heard tuned in, but it took about 10 listens before it hit me with the full scope of its awesomeness. Gimme another 10 listens and I’ll probably be absolutely obsessed with it.
i feel the same way, i've only listened to the album once and there are a few songs where i'm not sure how to feel about them, i still like pretty much all the songs but i think that after a few listens i will absolutely love this album
@@JustinVlad4 It's definitely worth a few listens, but it's prob not everyone's cup of tea at the same time. I'm guessing some fans want more of their original heaviness. I've always liked bands that mix heavy parts with more melodic, atmospheric arrangements, so this album is way up my alley.
I understand that and feel the same way with certain songs. Only thing that bother me about that is I think deep about stuff and that legit is a type of brainwashing lol. The easiest way to brainwash( maybe I'm thinking of another word but it's not coming to me ) but easiest way to do that someone is repetition. Also think about all the times you found yourself singing a song you absolutely hate but your singing it only because you have heard it so many times.. lol
This exactly. I still have so much appreciation for Owls because the songs that didn't speak to me for so long are suddenly connecting me... just in time for this album to drop. It's going to have loads of listens but like you said, appreciation will grow with time.
As a person whos been playing saxophone since i was 12, his solo; the technicality and sound are top notch, especially to be able to blend with this genre
The Void from Which No Sound Escapes Music: Uttley Lyrics: Biggs Away from here /no sound to hear I tear out my being, I feed it to my children All of this work I want you to remain here No escape This void keeps gripping tighter Should I let it stay It might just swallow me whole Running away, running away. I want you to remain I tear out my being and feed it to my children It keeps them sick with poison Addicted to these noises Not a single sound escapes this void which cannot be found Speak louder so this voice will carry Speak now before we get too carried away What did you expect to hear? A voice so loud and so clear Breathing in and out a sigh, of sweet relief tonight What did you expect to be? But a cynical man just like me. Drifting in and out of life, like curious moonlight When the fires fade and the river’s dry When you speak my name Like a weighted sigh Why don’t you hear the whisper in the void that we made real today Not a single sound, escapes this void which cannot be found. Speak louder so this voice will carry. Speak now before we all get carried away. When the fires fade, and the rivers dry, and there’s no escape, from a million eyes When the fires fade, and the rivers dry, when you speak my name just to say goodbye I’m what you fear, a whisper in the void with no escape, no escape When the fires fade, and the rivers dry, when you speak my name like a weighted sigh Why don’t you hear the whisper in the void that we made real today
The wider recognition of this band gives me hope for the future of metal. They have an extreme sound but done with imagination, technical proficiency and creative liberty! These guys make metal sound better! 🤘
I feel like this is the first song in metal for a long time, that people will talk about for ages. This is right up there with Holy Wars... and Master of Puppets for me.
This is album as a whole has been on constant repeat for me, and this particular song just hits me on so many levels. Best album of the year for me, keep the metal strong!
This song has me feeling like I’m levitating. Weightless yet crashing with emotion. Goosebumps. Especially when he sings “Why don’t you hear, the whisper in the void”
as a proud and growing beard owner: guys, it is just facial hair, it will come back (if they want to). i was more weirded out by a phil (from Khemmis in their newest video) with long hair for example.
Read an interview where Jake said this song was about his struggle as a musician in the emotion he puts behind his songs and how people sing these words like it's nothing and what it could be doing to them - "I tear out my being, and feed it to my children. It gets them sick with poison, addicted to these noises" And I also imagine the want to be remembered for your art when you/your band (Rivers) is gone. - "When the fires fade, when the Rivers dry" But you will always be remembered for your work and art.
This song is a stand out on what I think is an instant classic of an album. All the risks they've taken have paid off. One thing I think is overlooked is Jake's understated theatrics and presence amongst all the other visual elements.
These beautiful bastards somehow managed to capture every single feeling I’ve felt trying to make it as an artist for the past two years in this masterpiece of an album.
I've listened to this album at least once a day for the last week and I don't think that will stop soon. I am completely awestruck. This is the top tier melodic death, right here, and this is probably the best song on the album.
@@montgomerygk Genre slave? It isn't my fault you don't actually listen to, understand and more importantly, respect music. Of course, few bands are JUST one genre, nor should they be confined to it, but the fact you're thick enough to not hear the clear techdeath/progdeath parts of this is just embarassing. Now that I've been lowered to your level, I'm off to call Every Time I Die pop punk.
@@zilttsep6273 Well thanks for the lesson professor. I'm sure every time I hear Rivers of Nihil from now on I'll think of you. Is it melodic? Yeah. Is it death metal? Yeah. Is it progressive? Yeah. Is it technical? Yeah. Fuck outta here.
I'm so utterly floored , it's like I went through a time machine and watched the future of metal. I've played many styles for 41 yrs , including many styles of metal and progressive metal but this is utterly next level . Where owls know my name blew me away but THIS ?!? WTF ?!?
Not now Andy Thomas from black crown initiate is now in band and has massive beard if that matters to ya and there new some suborbital blues kills anything they have done thus far amazing Andy will bring so much more talent to this band I cannot wait for next album with his input together with Biggs and uttlely
@@timmystoner7219 Man, just came back to this video in preparation for their show next week and I gotta admit Suborbital Blues and the latest Hellbirds are really crushing, definitely looking forward to hearing them live. Also, to test this new bearded guy on guitar and see what he brings to the table. It should be pretty interesting
Every band crushed it at Come And Take It Live. I got there at 6:30 and even the opening band (Undead) crushed it. I was moslty there for RoN, ATB and Carnifex. BDM did great, but I'm not very in to them.
@@seanlester4110 cool you were there rocking out too man! I've never been into Carnifex and AtB so I was just there for Nihil and Dahlia. I missed the opener unfortunately, I'll have to give them a listen when I get a chance.
This is my first time hearing this song. I was reading the comments so I knew the sax was coming.... but holy shit, I was not prepared for that. That was fucking cool.
Its criminal that this vid doesn't have more views. I get its for people with discerning tastes in music, who require a greater level of talent from a musical act then most people do, we aren't lowbrow, we aren't swifties. But still this band deserves greater recognition.
Yes thank you Metal Blade and Rivers for coming back to the States with a headliner tour I'm going to LA from Vegas and I already know it's so worth it!
This album seems to have gone in exactly the direction these guys were headed. Glad to see they continue to push the boundaries. Great song, fantastic video.
Before I learned that this song is about an artist's emotional struggle, I always took it as a damaged man trying to do right by his children but kept accidentally fucking them up because of his own trauma. The line "I tear out my being/and feed it to my children/It keeps them sick with poison/Addicted to these noises" really drove me to that narrative and it fucking wrecked me because it's pretty close to my relationship with my own father. On the other hand, the official message of Jake struggling to hear his emotions thrown back at him from crowds disconnected from his experiences was really compelling too, and it made me think of how Tool refuses to play Wings For Marie live because a bunch of drunk/stoned assholes shoot it down and just want to hear Sober or The Pot.
Love the new album and the prog element to it. This is hands down the stand out track, huge sound to it and just makes you want more perfectly placed on the album. Keep the albums coming lads. 🤘
I can’t get enough of this song right now! Beautifully constructed. The guitar tone and instrumentation during the solo give me a strong Amorphis vibe, which was completely unexpected too.
Rivers of Nihil with saxophone is literally above all this fucking music industry. Man! Best song of this new incredible album. Come to Lyon, France. Please!
Love how they kept the Saxophone in this album also... Loving this album very much... But still can't get over that Terrestria IV ins't an instrumental...
Slightly different genre, but the band Warforged did a heavy concept style album similar to The Work and the album itself has a full-length music video! Super dope stuff and I'd recommend it to anyone who digs this kind of genre-meld, concept heavy prog death metal. Pretty underrated imo.
I got the pleasure of discovering this band at a show, when they opened for Killswitch Engage, and holy crap! They were easily my favorite act of the night, just because they were doing something completely different and it was so much fun. I mean that saxophone? Just damn. It was a wonderful experience and I had a blast. I'm easily gonna be a diehard fan now, and I"m DEFINITELY going to binge their entire discography
This band has brought so much life and passion back to metal that I feel like has been missing for a while. I am in no way saying that there hasn't been crazy good albums. Because there absolutely has been. But everything about this band just gives me this amazing vibe that just screams this is it!
The depths and expanse they bring to metal music is incredible... Sounds that not many could even imagine.. I guess it could be called prog metal but it has a rage and a softness this song carries at the same time... This duality I find impressive and hard to resist... I'll dig deeper most certainly... Plus the saxophone slays me... Love y'all...🖤❤️🖤
This band just keep producing gold in music form. Where Owl's Know My Name was a banger, and this one is amazing. Thanks to their amazing line up for giving us such moving music
The absolute magnitude this track lays on you is incredible. Rivers of Nihil always brings feeling to their craft. Reminds me of Where Owls Know My Name. A masterpiece
Saxophone is a lot like bacon, it's just plain good and goes with everything. In all seriousness, this band is amazing and I'm so happy they just keep getting better and better.
I've been in the metal scene since about 1999 so I'm an old fuck. I'd been losing interest in newer artists steadily over the years, and would only listen to the old stuff. Rivers of Nihil changed that. They got me excited about extreme metal again.
