Riverwood is a suburb/ neighbourhood in southern Sydney that is located 19 kilometres from the Sydney Central Business District and is part of the St George area. Riverwood is split between the local government areas of the Georges river council and the city of Canterbury - Bankstown. The area was originally known as Herne Bay after World War Two included a lot of public housing . It had gotten such a bad reputation as a place known for poverty , crime and violence that its name was changed to Riverwood in 1957 in hope to change the stigma attached to the area. Riverwood is a very multicultural suburb as well as Australian born people the 2021 census showed groups from mainland China , Phillipines, Lebanon, Vietnam, Hong Kong , African ,middle eastern , pacific countries and more. Riverwood is on the east hills railway line with Padstow to the west and Narwee to the east .

@craigbrown9029 Phew! Got one Haha. Yep it’s a well set out neighbourhood and one thing I notice in Riverwood is how wide and spacious the paving and seating areas are. Plenty of eateries and fresh fruit and veg stores . I have been thinking of going out to St Mary’s some time soon , the suburb is going to go through some big changes over the next few years that’s for sure with the western Sydney airport opening and business estates etc opening up they’re going to need plenty of new housing and infrastructure. I’m also a big fan of bird life and pigeons are one of my faves but they tend to get a bad name , I’ve rescued a few injured ones in my time along with parrots , native minors a crow and just a few weeks ago a bat. Cheers Craig Stay well 🙂

Excellent. I’ve never been here but Dad said he went to a dance there in the mid 50s when it was still known as Herne Bay! The town centre is certainly very well laid out and inviting with a wonderful selection of cuisine. Impressed with the tidiness too. Thanks Billy.

Cheers - it definitely is a well planned out area, the paving and public seating areas are so wide and spacious compared to most places I’ve seen . Loads of good eateries and plenty of independent businesses such as fruit and veg spots. Seems a pretty friendly area also . I wonder where it was that your dad went to the dance , would be interesting to know if it still exists. Thanks again Stay well🙂

Hello Billy, Here you go Riverwood a suburb I've not visited, only gone past on the train. As you know I'll walk anywhere with you. Its great to see how the shops are laid out there, it reminds me a bit of St Mary's which I used to visit back in the late 20 teens as my niece lived there. (That could be a great walk for you as I here there've built a new train station there and I think you will like it. My niece doesn't live there anymore she moved to Young back in 2018. Anyway Riverwood looks like it would be a nice place for me to have a look around as like most suburbs the shops are built around the train station. The reason why I've not gone is because I've not known anyone who's lived in that area. This is why I like watching your videos as it helps me decide if there are any shops I'd like to see that's not anywhere else. Plus its Sydney and I want to see as many suburbs as I can cause I love the place so much. I also love Sydney's bird life especially the pigeons. I feed the ones in my area it gives me pleasure and those white cocky's looked like they were having fun eating away there. (They don't care that your watching). Its really sad for me that I can't walk around as much as I used to because of my medical condition. Its why I really enjoy your work. I also do a lot of European, British and American walking tours online as well, yours stands out more because you've done a lot of different suburbs which can only help our tourists. So thanks for all the hard work you do for this channel and I'll see you on the next one. Cheers for now.
