This is perfect, I would absolutely love to print these out myself, and take my Rivian out camping. As someone who has back problems, I can't really camp using a tent, so this is the next best thing. I should also note that I would be willing to buy these as well.
Hi James, I am also an R1S owner and really like the simplicity of your set up. I would totally purchase a set of your 3d printed parts if you wanted to set up a little store or whatever. I could make these from wood but as you know, the plastic is lighter and most likely stronger. Love your simplicity. Let me know if and when you set this up. Love it.
Hi Everyone, I went ahead and made my own platform, just took some time measuring this all up and I think I made it personalized even better, custom shape so it is wider at the front of the R1S and also built the tailgate piece solid so nothing slips around on that end and the Studio boxes are perfect. Also added Carpet over each piece to hide the holes in the wood and make it nice on the sleeping pad. Best hint was also those great little lights. Several nights now 'camping' and it all works great. Thanks for the inspiration to move on this project.
Omgosh! I would LOVE the SUV just to car camp! We do it in our Jeep Grand Cherokee but to have the extra length and frunk for storage would be a game changer. James did an AMAZING job with the platform and storage bins! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
we got our 3 weeks ago.. I have posted few small videos.. great SUV but not perfect. Soon I will post a few early observations and I already made a service appointment.
Not sure I understand the point. Those 3 boxes can just site on the side and then you sleep on the other side. You can also use the spare tire compartment for extra storage and the frunk. I do like the lights and the inductive stove. Would love to see a "velcro board " to protect the split gate when cooking and to use as a cutting board.
Main purpose was to have a good size sleeping space with storage underneath that didn’t need to be moved for sleeping. Lots of possible solutions out there for sure!
Love you content! Just one suggestion regarding when you talk to the camera is to not continue looking away every few sentences. It was something that just stuck out and consistent through your videos.
What are the dimensions for the 3030 Aluminum? I figure you have already cut them to size and if you had the measurements for each piece and how many of each size, that would be very helpful.
This is an awesome setup and love the reading lights too. Question though, where did he get the suction magnetic heads for the light when he had them in the back windshield.
Way cool!! What does James use for ventilation when he's sleeping--does he have some sort of screen set up for the passenger windows that lets air in but keeps bugs out? Really interesting and really creative solutions--I would guess James is either an engineer by training or just really mechanically inclined. Thanks for sharing!
Yup as Shane said he can lightly run the HVAC in Camp Mode to keep it cool/warm inside. This is his first iteration of this idea and he’s already working on some other cool solutions for nets - can confirm he’s definitely a very creative guy!
Could you ask James if a simple PDF version of the parts might be uploaded with all the other amazing information. I would find the dimensions very helpful for those of us without 3d printing capabilities. I know my way around a router and jigsaw but the plastic world is a little tricker. Thanks in advance if that is possible. All the links to the gear and that foam hack is super cool. Ordered me some of that last night.
So the link for the 3d files is in the description if you were interested in building yourself - definitely a possibility that we could create a whole kit in the future👍🏻
@@ChargeOverland I don't know how to open or access the file... any chance you could convert it to a PDF that I could attempt? That or I bet if you built several you won't have any trouble selling them complete.. Thanks!
This is really cool, I'd love to build it for my R1s. I see in the links there's the file for the 3D printed parts, but I don't see details on the framing dimensions or the plywood details. Am I missing something?
Wow, Rivian has has done well by getting some cool features I like in my Disco 4. Spit tailgate and completely flat folding seats. Both such a cool features I would miss switching my ride. Even newer LC's and LR's don't have split tailgate anymore. And not too many cars have completely flat folding seats. Too bad Rivian isn't in Europe. We only have pointless and expensive city-SUV's like Mercs, Volvos and Audis...
Hey, how did you make your custom window shades? Currently I'm using fitted mesh screens but then have custom (poorly) cut black tarp that I sandwich in. It's perfect once they're, I can have 100,000 candle power lighting inside and it looks pitch black from the outside... but being that each window uses two pieces is a pain...
Thanks for the informative video. Can you share James' contact info since the .STL files, in his printables link above, appear to be corrupt and can't open?
At this point he just has the info/files shared in the description link for people to build on their own. Maybe some day I can convince him to sell them ;)
Storage is definitely a big reason but as far as I know the camp level system doesn’t account for the slight angle you get with the seats folded flat 🤔
