I once had the privilege to step onboard a specimen from the Dutch Koninklijke Luchtmacht, as it was safely parked in a hangar of the (then) Helikopterservice (Now CHC Helikopterservice) main base at Sola Airport, Stavanger, Norway. That bird had been transported by road - on a trailer - for a complete maintenance overhaul at Sola. I distinctly remember the huge, six 'stacked' rotor-blades secured in the aircraft's loading bay. What a _truly_ awesome machine! . . . . . Exquisite footage!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's incredible to think that the blades have to be very precisely designed to not hit each other while still having enough flex. Also incredible to think that they actually change their tilt as it rotates rotation in order to control it. So however fast it's spinning it's changing the tilt that many times per second as it may be tilted more on one side than the other to put more thrust on that side. Incredible engineering goes into copters (even single rotor ones).

There are four variable forces in constant opposition to one another which must either be balanced or over come to allow an aircraft to not only leave the ground but move around its three axis. The four variable forces are thrust verses drag, and lift verses gravity. These four forces act on the three axis which are common to all aircraft. The three axis are, roll, pitch and yaw and act precisely on the center of gravity of the structure of the aircraft. The vertical axis which is acted on by the elevator, is used to direct the aircraft either up or down from its direction of flight. The center axis around which the aircraft can be made to roll by the use of its ailerons while maintaining its direction of flight as indicated by its gyro compass. Various inputs by any of the control surfaces allow the pilot to maneuver the aircraft in a manner called a coordinated maneuver and is indicated by the instrument called a turn and bank indicator which indicates the motions of turning and effected by the rudder and the banking motion controlled by the elevators. When thrust equals drag and lift equals gravity a fixed wing aircraft is considered to be 'flying'.

For one they are putting on a show. Showing everyone how they do their preflight checks. And two, it's for safety reasons, just neglect the fact a part of the fuesalage is missing though. If needed they can take off probably under 15-10 mins. It's gotta be done properly. If something is missing, it's dripping fuel, coolant and such, it could be catastrophic in flight, better to see it on the ground with the engine off then in the air when the engine cuts off.

I can't imagine the amount of g-stress is on all of the moving parts in rhat rotor head. It's mind boggling how nimble,and how FAST this GIANT is!!!

The front rotor is driven from the rear gearbox via a driveshaft running along the roof. The front and rear rotor are synchronised so that the blades miss each other, as they overlap. If the driveshaft or the front or rear gearbox fails, the blades hit each other and it crashes.
@get2dachoppa249
@get2dachoppa249 6 лет назад
The forward rotor is driven by the forward transmission via the 1-7 sync shafts coming off the combining transmission, so to say its driven by the "rear" gearbox is an oversimplification and not totally accurate. We don't use the terms "front" or "rear" when it comes to identifying the transmissions in the -47 community.
@coloradowilderness3139
@coloradowilderness3139 6 лет назад
gjmob If the driveshaft or the front or rear gearbox fails, then the probability to crashe is 33.33%. Thanks.
@get2dachoppa249
@get2dachoppa249 6 лет назад
No, the probability is 100% that it crashes if the fwd, combining, or aft transmissions fails, along with any of the 9 sync shafts failing for whatever reason.
