Followed Can Am racing back in the 70's. These machines screamed through the course. The sound those velocity stacks pumped out screamed speed. Thanks for the memories!!

Mechanical fuel injection back then was either the engine at idle, or at full acceleration, with little in-between. It could be a reason why mechanical fuel injection was not suitable for street vehicle use.

Denny Hulme won the Can-Am race back in 1967 on this same course in a similar car; his was a M6A model. Bruce McLaren had a rare DNF from mechanical problems in that same race. The race covered 200 miles/321 kilometers with *no fuel stops and no tire changes.*

I am sure it is more fun than legally allowed! I was at the "Glen" for the '67 or '68 FI race. Bruce McLaren was running the Ford Indy motor in his car. It didn't seem to perform well. At the end of the race, Bruce gets out of his car and helps his crew member push the car to the paddock! Quite a guy, must have been real down to earth.

This video of yours "Jim Pace" as I was watching it, my hair on my head was flying backwards as I watched. I also believe my eyes got distorted also when you were at full borne through "Thunder Valley" at "The Hawk" @ Road America. This video was much greater than impressive. This video was very impressive and beyond. Jim, I have a question for you. Do you know who drives the 1968 #22 McLaren M6B Chassis #50-06? It is White in color with Red & Blue racing stripes. Chassis number 50-06, built in 1968, was sold new to AutoDelta, the racing division of Alfa Romeo, for their T-33 Race Project. After Alfa was done, 50-06 was placed in an Italian barn until found by Charlie Gibson. Charlie brought it to the United States with intentions of using the McLaren on the street. While doing the street project vintage racing started to get going and Charlie directed his efforts to racing the car and did so until his untimely death in 2004. Dave Handy, co-owner of Sasco Motorsports acquired the car and raced it until bought by the current owners in 2011. Jim to see a picture of this 1968 #22 McLaren M6B go to facebook.com/groups/CanAmRacing4/ there is my Canadian American Challenge Cup Series Can-Am photos of 1966 - 1974. Jim I would appreciate your help, and would really like you to join this group, and add your video's, pictures, info, to share with others as you do here also. Thank you, and appreciate you Jim Pace....Stan Bunner

You can look this up for verification, but the McLaren M6B was a 1967 model. Puzzling why cssutherland had the video title card saying it was a 1966 model . . . as the real 1966 model, the McLaren M1B, looked more like a barge when compared to the M6B seen in this video. You can check for verification of the 1966 Can Am season for the images of the cars that ran that season. I followed the Can Am series back then. The McLaren team in '67 ran with a 358 cubic inch/5.9 liter Chevy engines in the McLaren M6A model. Other teams, such as the Jim Hall Chaparral with the 2E, and on occasion the Roger Penske Lola T70 (driven by Mark Donohue), ran with the 427 cubic inch/7 liter Chevy engine. Two advantages the McLaren M6A that the McLaren team ran in '67 (as the M6B were production models sold to other teams for the '68 season) was with aerodynamics and wheel hubs designed for extra-wide wheel rims. The wheel hubs for the extra-wide rims allowed McLaren to use the widest possible race tires Goodyear could manufacture at the time. Other teams tried copying McLaren with mounting the wide rims on the Lola T70s, with many of them suffering from wheel bearing failures and wheel hub problems. Another reason McLaren ran away with the '67 Can Am season was the fact that the competitors were still using 1966 model year racers: The Lola T70 and Chaparral 2E.

That thing looks terrifying and AMAZING to drive! So much power and so little between you and the road and everything on it. Also that footwell looks kind of strange, looks like it'd be awkward to get your feet into it? Also how is the racing in these events? I imagine when everyone is driving very expensive and VERY rare cars people won't be taking any crazy risks :)

What makes such fast shifting possible? I've driven manual for 30 years, sport cars and HP cars but never anything I could shift that fast. What do they put in race cars so you can do that? Double clutch?
@theswimmer220
@theswimmer220 9 лет назад
Straight cut gears, not using the clutch to shift just lifting a bit on the throttle.

I could be wrong, but I think there is a very short paddock gear used for getting to and from the track making it a 5 speed, i'll ask. JP can be very "efficient" in his down shifts, so looks can be deceiving and thats all i'm saying ;-)
