During an exercise near Gothenburg, Sweden, a road became a runway for the Swedish Air Force's Gripen fighter jets.
Nato has released footage of the Gripens landing on a road in rural Sweden.
Swedish fighter pilots were practising the art of landing on civilian highways - giving them extra flexibility for any potential crisis.

🤔 so...if you want to turn on the street, you not only have to look left and right but also up...? 🧐

Probably the best aircraft to replace the RAF Jaguar GR3 in a "What if" scenario. Just saying...

We couldn't do that in the UK, the roads aren't smooth enough

It requires special sections of road. Also the aircraft and the maintenance system are designed to only require 4 people to rearm, refuel and perform the basic turnaround tasks. The aim is to fly more frequently to make up for having much less aircraft.

They would me made smooth. Did you miss the part about ‘specially engineered roads’?
@thunder2434
@thunder2434 2 месяца назад
@@johnnunn8688Don't read too much of it into that. It means the road section is widened and that a roadside space is available to camoflage and refuel & rearm the plane. You wouldn't want big potholes either in the asphalt. Not much more to it than that. These roads are normal car roads used every day by actual cars, just a wider stretch.

@@thunder2434 that’s why I said any potholes would be made smooth but don’t read to much into it.

Trolls keep spreading that Gripen using roads to land and take off is hype. Does this look like hype to you?

“Specially engineered road” - so a runway *I know Gripen’s can land on some rough stuff. Still not Mig-29 landing/takeoff distance though
@AlexKall
@AlexKall 4 месяца назад
It doesn't need "Specially engineered road", as long as the road is wide and long enough and there's nothing on the road surface (objects, such as dividers etc) it can land on it.
@timmurphy5541
@timmurphy5541 4 месяца назад
I think they do use specially engineered bits of road but they're much too short for most jets and I don't think the engineering is very special.

That's why the F35 is so popular because it doen't need runways and roads
@jacktyler5241

Depends on the variant, no?
@supercat380
@supercat380 4 месяца назад
@@jacktyler5241 actually, vertical take-off and landing or even VTOL doesn't need a runway, just a short strip. However, this comes at a cost of high fuel consumption resulting in reduced payload penalty.
@pepperroni6252
@pepperroni6252 4 месяца назад
@@supercat380 You do realise they still need heat resistant roads to land on? the jet wash is very hot and would easily melt tarmac
@supercat380
@supercat380 4 месяца назад
@@pepperroni6252 considering that the northern countries in Europe have cool weather, unlike southern European countries, it is unlikely that the quick heat wave of the landing or departing aircraft will have a adverse affect on the road asphalt. The main problem is lack of landing lights and width of road to accomodate the aircraft safely.
@jacktyler5241
@jacktyler5241 4 месяца назад
@@supercat380 I think you misunderstand me. Not all F35s have VTOL capabilities. I also believe operationally F35s are STOVL not VTOL, despite being VTOL capable. So some F35s do need runways for take off and landing, depending on the variant.

yes, when the highway from Zuerich to Bern was finished in the 1960's, stretches were regularly tested for jet landings, like Mirage, Hunter, Venoms.....
