Because he can play more than himself.. Statham is pretty good, better than the other 2 , but yeah no comparison to JG. Reminds me of the story of a kid coming up to George Peppard on Home From the Hill asking if he's a movie star,he said " NO I'm am an actor".. pointed to George Hamilton " He's a movie star". JG is an actor, the other 3 are movie stars.
Jason Statham is a man I can't take seriously having been in my teens in the 90's. Gold speedos and glitter all over his body in the Shaman comin on video. I just can't see him as tough after that. every film hes in, i think about that video and his tough guy act looks rediculous. like someone cast Ben Shapiro as a pro wrestler or something. It's just ridiculous.
If the movie is so removed from the original, why name it after the original? The answer is they need nostalgia to get it noticed. I think this hurts the new movie by endless comparisons.
Your so right man. I thought the new version was trash tbh. Dalton Is supposed to be a badass womanizer. You really felt that in the originals his aura had that. This jake guy is boring and has no aura really and I couldn't imgaine him seducing a girl. He seems so boring then you got conner going over the top to. The original had great music great acting. Great location choice and vibe of the film. It was a cool movie. This new version really doesn't feel right. Theres no emotion in the new dalton's eyes.
He was round house kicking so hard he woke up his headstone neighbors creatively bankrupt Hollywood got to remake, re-imagine, or reboot something that made a generation or multiple generations feel something special Terry Funk is dead as well and the original was one of his best secondary villain roles
I don’t think Swayze would have been offended. Course he isn’t here to give his thoughts, but I think he would’ve been supportive given his kind nature
I actually had a conversation with Patrick here in Albuquerque. Somewhere around late 1995. Literally just saw him meet up with a friend in the parking lot of my local theater. Patrick was in town for the arabian horse show they used to have here. He was big into buying and selling horses in his spare time. Anyway, he was meeting up with a friend from the show to take them to go see Three Wishes. Anyway, as I was walking by and noticed who he was. I asked him, being a martial arts nerd I've been my whole life what his thoughts on Bill "Superfoot" Wallace were. Dude stopped dead in his tracks and we talked martial arts until he had to go. about 15 minutes. What I learned from that conversation is that dude DEEPLY loved martial arts. Guys knowledge ran pretty deep honestly. Anyway, had he lived, he totally would have loved following the MMA scene and how it's exposed that basically all traditional martial arts are complete bullshit con operations. That guy would have LOVED the evolution it's gone through. The guy I talked to, he would have welcomed a modernization of the movie and likely would have been helping promote it. The guy didn't talk trash. He was way too respectful of other martial artists for any of that.
@@cerebrix Plus, I think Jake as Dalton would have made him very happy. Jake has talked about how Patrick & his wife were very supportive of him when he was just starting out. That is so f'n cool, you talking to Patrick like that.
@@jimapplebee5322 It was cool, totally random. I had only recently moved to Albuquerque and had no idea they had a huge horse show at the time. Was still adjusting to New Mexico's very unique culture. I remember seeing him chilling on the hood of some car thinking "that dude looks just like patrick swayze". I went over to tell him how much he looked like him as a joke but as I got closer I was like "holy shit that's totally the guy". He was super cool about it. Really good dude. I studied Martial Arts from 6-18 and met a lot of traditional martial artists over the years. He had a really level headed approach to where American martial arts were at. We talked about how I had to quit Tae Kwon Do and take Kempo and American style kickboxing so I didn't have garbage hands. He mentioned a few arts he studied, I don't remember which, but we connected on how it was impossible at the time to find 1 art to make you a well rounded martial artist. Patrick would have loved MMA.
I haven't seen it (yet?), but this makes you wonder if they could have easily changed the names of characters and of the movie and made it it's own thing.
One of my favourite things about the original is the fact Patrick Swayze’s character had the Sam Elliot friend character. Also, the blind blues guitarist was very memorable! Is there any comparable musician in this remake?
Yeah Jeff Healey is a fucking amazing guitarist, love his cover of while my guitar gently weeps. Plus love when he played with Steve ray Vaughn and the bass guitarist had to look over his shoulder to actually make sure he’s playing what he is cause it’s so unbelievable for a man let along a blind man
Not really..it was by committee, different acts throughout. Not bad, but not as good as Healey. Healey's style was perfect for a bar. This movie the bar was too Margaritaville.
The original Roadhouse sits right up there with Point Break, Rocky IV, Predator and Top Gun (either of them) as some of my favourite braindead, watch-em-cos-you-love-em kinds of movies. I'll probably like this one too... but I'll miss Sam Elliott - he was perfect...
@@MizoMisualpayo I agree that the crow remake does not need to happen but there are black people in the original also. It has Winston from ghost busters. The remake doesn’t need to happen but no need for the woke police.
@feim185 Which is actually one of my favorite parts of the movie. The fights are so funny. Things are quite subjective, I guess. The OG will always have a charm.
I had someone tell me their uncle worked on the first Road House as Swayze's "phone book guy". Anytime Swayze had a scene with someone over 5'6" he would run over and stack the books as needed for Swayze to stand on before shooting.
Now that makes a lot of sense. I watch one of those YT vids on the heights of Hollywood actors and there are WAY more shorter actors (under 5'"9") than tall ones. I saw Arnold Swartzegger (spelling?) in a boutique in Georgetown, D.C. I was standing next to him looking at clothes (Ralph Lauren) and was amazed we were the same height (6') and he looked like a fit guy of perfectly normal size (it was early spring so we both wore jackets).@@MoviesNeverSayDie
The most important thing here is the best "part" of the original movie, Sam Elliott as Wade Garrett. No remake, no matter how good it is can beat that !
Dalton being a world famous UFC fighter sort of makes him being famous and recognisable make more sense than in the original were he was just legit a bouncer :P I liked it overal. I think 7 is fair, it wasn't amazing, but it was a good movie and i can definatly rewatch it. It had fun characters in it and McGregor was fun to watch. And Gyllenhaal sells the movie.
Hollywood doesn't have enough creative brain power to make their own movie so they have to remake good movies, and make them badly, one day Hollywood will get around to remaking The Princess Bride and Stand By Me, they already did the Hollywood remake treatment on Point Break look how that turned out
Well remakes have been around about a century and there are a ton of great ones better than the original. The problem is people that don't know enough about film think it's a new problem and they're inherently bad, both of which are false. About 5% of movies a year are remakes, and I think that's hardly an overbearing amount to get upset about. The entire falicy is merely ignorant BS.
@@Axolotl_Mischief I can only think of one good remake in the last 30 years and that would be Heat and that's only because the original was actually pretty bad
@@jerrypeacock2234The Thing, Scarface, Ocean's Eleven, A Star is Born, The Fly, The Departed, Invasion of the Body Snatchers 78 and The Mummy 99 are all objectively better than the originals. Hell, The Most Dangerous Game has been remade about twenty times, I'm sure one of those is pretty good, too (though I'm assume that it isn't Hard Target lol)
Fair assessment... Your points make sense. I liked this a little better. I had a really good time watching this with my mother and we both laughed, dug the action and liked that it wasn't a rehash of the original. I also felt like "if" they were to do a sequel of sorts that Conor and Jake's characters should team the FK up... Why not. This movie was played fairly straight till the point Jake goes the FK off. You see he really is dark. Anti-hero of sorts. A good guy that if pushed too far goes dark and doesn't give a FK all the way through. Those were my take aways. As you say, great B movie. I agree... But a damn good one for what it is...
It's good to see McGregor's practice in that Burger King advert paying off. I'm only half joking cuz if you compare the two performances he's made leaps and bounds in terms of line delivery. He's trying his best dammit
First mistake was placing it in the Keys but filmed mostly in DR...any Floridian could spot that! They way the "Locals" talked and interacted was just ridiculous, apparently research was NOT done. The fight scenes were pretty good, but I really couldn't submit to the fantasy of the Monroe County Sheriff being that corrupt, and he "ran" all of Monroe County, that was just too far fetched. I'm gonna take a guess as to why they couldn't actually film in Monroe County, they had this movie looking like a western with only one sheriff in town and few deputies 😂😂😂. They should have picked some remote spot out in the middle of nowhere for all that dumb shit 😂😂
This is a huge disappointment. I had such high hopes for this movie! Why didn't they stay on script no Wesley no Garrett no original punch lines, and way too much comedy. It's a shame this movie could have had so much potential. The only thing they were missing was a gay person in this movie and it would have been completely woke
Think you've got that theater vs home theology a bit off there.... Theater = big fuzzy screen, terrible sound, bed bug infested chairs, of which are also covered in hair (all kinds), fluids, solids, and sadly more... Home = 4K HDR screen, likely 55"-80" or so... far better detail, far better color, far better contrast, and far better sound too. As most are going to have sound systems, subs, etc. From there it just goes up with options, adaptive rear lighting, amazing seating, snacks that aren't $40+ each thing... from drinks, to candy, to popcorn.... Home's better in every way, but it's also where you're gonna see through bad cgi... if anything bad cgi is FAR more hidden on the big blurry screen. While someone else's body lice make you their new home...
Great review. I thought McGregor did great in that role. like the original, there are parts that are unbelievable, but it is what it is. I also liked that Gyllenhall made the character his own and didn't try to play it exactly like swayze.
In my opinion, it's generic and predictable The fights feel too flaky with overly quick cuts and angles. It can feel a bit nauseous Pretty much the trailer already revealed the best parts. Connor had some good laughs, but overall, it's a good stupid flick. 6/10
I'm just glad that they made the owner of the bar a black woman, the singer a white woman, the bartender a lesbian, and all his staff of bouncers a diverse group of people. We gotta make sure and "fix" those "problem" areas in old films to make them "better".
I think that making it an MMA movie was a bad choice.. Why can't they just be regular bad asses? I find the MMA setting unappealing to be honest.. It's hard to tell who the target audience is
I liked it. Different but modern and entertaining. I was waiting for the Sam Elliot charter the whole time. I was like who did he email at the bookstore?
The original had a ton of heart despite its B movie trappings. From the trailer alone you can tell this remake doesn’t capture that, or even attempt to…
The remake was a good B movie and that is just what we need to see more of these days, But you are right it was missing the T and A that the original had. It was refreshing not being lectured to or over ridden with politics.
NO NO NO NO HELL NO!! Road House 89 is a classic that should have never been touched. Hell I'm still mad that they even made a sequel to it 15 years later after the original. I'll say it before and I'll say it again. Hollywood is creatively bankrupt is just make cheap cashions on classic movies. It has to stop fans. We have to not go to these movies and spend our money on cheap remakes
Original Road House is the single greatest film of all time, pinnacle of filmmaking, world class soundtrack, second to none, no movie in history comes close
I had someone quote that line to me BEFORE I had ever seen the film and it was… confusing. I wish I could go back in time to let that person know how cool he actually was for knowing that film.
@@GDub83 yah man, that OG movie is overhyped trash. Bad script, plot, acting, fight scenes, it's just a bad movie that get's more cred that should. I get it if you like bad movies, but to say that the OG is a good movie is just a poor opinion
This isn't the Dalton from the first original, and I didn't want it to be... I was hoping for a fresh take on a great movie and I got that. I really liked his personality, always being nice, trying to help, (even the people he beat up). Feel free to listen to other's opinions, but just watch it for yourself and decide for yourself.
Didn't they say the "Roadhouse" can't be accessed by Boat which is why they unload Booze through the front? On a Dolly They mention that there's no reason for them to want it cause literally the land is useless for bringing stuff in, so how did the Boats smash into the Roadhouse if it wasn't the depth to be able to drive a boat up?
This movie was worse than AIDS and Cancer together. CMG can't act if his life depended on it. It was so bad, it feels like Netflix and Disney teamed up to make it
I grew up with the original and have watched it (certain scenes may have stretched the VHS!) and loved it as much as anyone - and I'm actually really pumped for this movie
Sold on the trailer? Yeah, I was sold by the trailer as well, sold as to why the F' does Hollywood keep fixing what isn't broke? This movie looks more than serviceable for what it appears to be, but calling it "Road House" is blasphemy. "Bouncer on the Beach", "Tough Guy Bar", anything but calling it Road House, because there are some movies that just don't need reboots or remakes, and this was one of them. As a fan of the original and someone who has Amazon Prime, I have ZERO interest in ever watching this, as why would I? As it has ZERO chance of improving on the first, which makes it a waste of my time.
The mercenary a small indie movie released in 2020 was the best original action martial arts movie I saw in a long time. It stars Dominique Vandenberg the guy who created the fighting scenes in gangs of New York and was a real life soldier of fortune and French foreign legionnaire in 2Rep
The fact that Roadhouse is being remade is an indictment against Hollywood and the studios. They cant make anything new that's good. What's next? A remake of no retreat, no surrender?
Just thinking of the original puts a smile on my face. It’s a mess but it’s just too much fun. Much as I love Jake and Doug Liman is a good choice you just can’t replace the original. It’s of it’s time and place and I wouldn’t change it (although I would love to see the original cut)
The blood, sweat, & tears he put into his body for this role, in addition to him just being a great actor, I can't wait to see what Jake does in this remake. Love the original, I just hope this one does nicely.
I watched the new movie yesterday and the original today, and I actually enjoyed both. Similar in premise, however the story does takes some new beats here and there. Missing a Sam Elliot friend character, however Jake and the big guy do well in the second half of the movie as rivals and there is enough background character plot, plus good fight scenes in the remake to make both entertaining for me. Original 9/10 Remake 8/10 for me.
In hollywood originality costs money and comes with a lot of risk but remaking existing films that did well is quick easy cash even if they don't live up to the originals they get by on name recognition alone.
What? The original is so bad. The script, the dialogue, the acting, the fight scenes, the plot, everything about that movie was straight garbage. It was a glorified B movie at best.
I kind of like the Patrick Swayze version better in that it had heart. It made you care for the Dalton character. The remake had good acting, actions sequence were decent. But it was missing something, in that I didn't care about the characters as I did with the 80s version.
It would’ve made more sense to call it ROAD HOUSE 3 with the lead NOT named Dalton, just to reduce comparisons and let the film stand better on its own… as your review states, PART “3” IS entertaining… to a fault.
It was a decent movie and had it been named something else it would have even been a good movie BUT naming it what they did gave it VERY unrealistic expectations. Some movies just shouldn't be messed with and THIS was one of them.
I watched this remake last night [at time of comment]...and for me, I'd call it like this: As a Friday Night romp/remake...it was good, it had all the ingredients for a goodie/baddie battle...brief story history of the protagonist...and gets to the point. However!...for me, it didn't have that family-vibe built between the characters like the original did. The original with Swayze broke the mould...It was by an era...With "The Original" you NEVER get bored of watching it...for an era. That being said, the ridiculousness of baddies getting severly beaten up/stabbed and "literally" coming back worked in this CGI-Punches version, as you know what you're getting, and it doesn't have to take itself seriously...My childhood era vis the original will never be surpassed "in terms of its enduring staying-power over the past 35+yrs] but this modern version, with fantastic physiques to aspire to/the fights/the action/a scarilly-wild Conor McGregor...It's good...I give the original 1989 version an 8.5/10...and the 2024 remake 7.5/10....
I just don't get the remake aspect of it. Couldn't you just have had him be Dalton's son? He's a UFC fighter who is disgraced, learns who his father was, then tries to be a legendary cooler just like him? Seems like that would've made a whole lot more sense to me...
I think Conor, key word “looked” great in the movie but the writing for his lines…. I get he’s a debuting actor and everything but at least give him a shot at something serious. His best moment, acting moment, is at the end of the bar scene, pretty chilling.
It's not a total parody but a middle of the road one. I can appreciate that. The people treating this movie as a bit for bit replica as the original are ignorant. That's not the movies purpose.
I thought this was more of a re-imagining of the original concept rather than a remake. Aside from the basic premise, the movie plays out different. I really liked the new film. They should have called it something else. It could have been a Road House 2. Like those sequels that have the same premise but with a different cast and such.
Action effects story etc are amazing. This guy doesn't know what he is talking about. He is right about one thing. It can't touch the original. But it wasn't meant to. This was meant to be a different story arc. Think multiverse. As a stand alone movie this was VERY good. Job well done.
Just watched it on streaming, had low expectations but actually found it enjoyable. No where near as good as original but Hollywood needs to make more movies like this. Low budget action films with over the top hero’s and villains!!
Roadhouse is one of my favourite films n I am worried that the new one will be like the remake of point break n be shit n point break is one of my favourite too
I like em both, real campy, some corny dialogue, great performance by a tree named Fred. Didn't seem to take itself too seriously, I'd watch it again just like I'd rewatch the OG again.
