My Dad was Very impressed on how you done that for someone who does not do it for a living!!!!! My loved how you took off and how you did progressive shifting!!! Overall My Dad Loved how you drove !!!
Which red desert are you referring to the big one outside or the smaller one inside, with a bit of water and a packet of seeds you could grow your own veggies on that dash board. Just kidding, that Bull dust gets everywhere, a good instructional video thanks.
The sound of that beautiful engine going through the gears with the turbo whistling just sounds great, I'm glad I got into the world of trucks. Even though I'm an apprentice diesel mechanic I'd love to do some big rig driving when I get qualified, going for my HC license soon :)
Thanks Ross for explaining in such a clear and understanding way how a 18 speed ROAD RANGER works . If ever i get the chance to have a go at one , your tutorial video on how to operate a 18 speed ROAD RANGER will surely assist me , Take care .
im starting my HR lessons this week in NT. Got advised to look at some youtube content on RoadRanger gear shifting. This is the easiest to follow so far. Thanks champ
Hey mate, just wanted to say thanks so much for posting this, out of every other video I watched trying to understand the concept you were the most crystal clear with it! I work on a large scale farm and had to move grain trucks around the place, problem was I made a dogs breakfast pretty quick the first time I tried an 18 speed. Driven plenty of 10-15speed trucks but 18 seemed impossible till I seen this. Cheers !
Y'all must really like dirt there because its everywhere in the truck! I live in East Texas and we have sand here and some red clay but nothing like west Texas...very hot and dry there and lots more sand. No worries mate! (Love the accent and all the different sayings y'all have)
"it's a little bit heavier that what I thought" he says pulling three trailers with two containers and an excavator. Nice video, and it's demystified the RR gearbox a bit for me, I'm more confident about going for my roadranger ticket when I get my HR license now.
love the vid helps alot considering I live over in the uk closest I get to a truck is virtually atm but its good practice personally 12 and 18 speeds are easiest though I prefer 18
I drove a denning landseer with a 6V92T and a 6 speed spicer and getting used to the clutch brake was the bit that got me as I didn't know what it was but I was able to float the gears fairly quickly so I didn't bother with it.
This primemover has a clutch brake. It's engaged by pressing the clutch pedal to the floor. As the bloke above me correctly pointed out, they're for selecting a gear while stationary.
I've got a 18spd RR in my volvo FH16 with a cummins ISX & I can't workout the clutch brake as I can easily engage 1st & reverse from a total stop with just a half clutch about 70% of the time, but the rest of the time (& for crawler) I have to use the brake to engage them? 🤔🤔
Very good video I'm 14 love truck the gears are confusing me abit one question do when gearing down say your in high range gearing gown from 16th would you have you put the clutch in 15th release the clutch clutch in and 14th all the way down?
Dude, you should be an instructor. You explain it better than most of the clowns out there. (Here's looking at you Punjabi licenses for $200, shady shit)
that is a low inertia trans, that is what the l in rtlo stands for. there is no need to double clutch if you split every gear, the splitter is not overdrive. overdrive is the highest gear with the stick. low split is a slight reduction. what i mean is that over and up against the dash, in high range and high split is 1-1, when put in the next hole ( over and down) then you are in overdrive, low split with a slight reduction to your o/d = .86 and high split = .73
that is a common misconception from the old days when the early 13 speeds actually were direct with o/d split. that was the old design level 6. modern 13 speeds are the same as the 18
+Mijc Osis (mycosys) true that O/D is output speed faster that engine RPM, however my comment was in response to others calling it a double over shock it is not. It high gear with the stick coupled with low split = .86 O/D ratio and high split = .73 overdrive ratio. That does not mean double over just because there are 2 choices, because low split is a slight reduction coupled with O/D in main box, high split is direct coupled with O/D in main box.
Bulldust --- ain't it a bitch !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All the Armourgard in the world won't help -- red bull dust is red bull dust and you just learn to live with it.
No you don't use the clutch . You pre select down a half a gear and then you let of the throttle it will come out of half gear you the. Give it a quick rev and it will go into the next lower gear on its own
Ashime Queeman When you split you don't necessarily need to use the clutch. Eaton Fuller doesn't say it. To split back to direct, keep the foot on the gas, split back, ease off the accelerator then "lift" your revs by 200. Sort of like blipping your throttle in the car when you shift back a gear to accelerate.
I'm only in my teen years and sometimes if i get the time i drive a 13speed,,,18speed confuses me too much but i dont double clutch i only step on the clutch to the floor if i wanna jake shift double de clutch doesnt work for me
Wynand Rautenbach Fairly simple mate. Just count it as 2 X 4 speeds stacked on top of each other. Leave the splitter alone until you are comfortable with the box. Each gear is 400rpm apart. so 1500 to 1100 on the way up and 1100 up to 1500 on the way down. As Timmeh says, the only difference is splitting the bottom of the box. If the 18 is too many gears for you, you wouldn't like my old Road Boss. It had 72 to play with. Hehehe
+Jerry Jerry Jerry And spend 201,000 per year. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Truck driving is truck driving the world over. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It comes in once a week/month whatever and goes out VERY VERY QUICKLY.
dave scott The mining boom in Australia has ended and the camp jobs are rapidly dwindling with former employees going back from whence they came in their thousands as mines drastically cut production and employee (contractor) numbers thus the chance of getting a job with one of the large mining companies driving fixed route ore carrying etc is Zip Zero Zilch. Traditional on highway road trains are used for carrying general freight over long distances and, as a previous poster wrote, the sleeper is the accommodation provided to the driver. Apart from that you need to be very self reliant with a goodly amount of mechanical knowledge and be able to get yourself out of trouble -- or better still not get into it in the first place. I am sure there are plenty of similar jobs in Canada where you can gain the experience you want. What is Class 1 in Canada. ???
Brodie Shepherd yeah MC. Multi combination. Length limited to 53.5m but weight is limited by the GCM of the truck. The licence has no weight limitation
Really good vid mate! Other blokes out there with more 'professional' vids haven't conveyed as much info as you have here e.g. the pointers on revs and rev ranges is fantastic. Many thanks mate!!
If I can, I'll definitely open a Freight Company here in the Philippines and run Road Trains. Such a badass Kenworth. Thanks for the video, it might be years later but this is still extremely informative in 2020. This is gonna help me a lot in my future endeavors!
Good vid mate a lot of “professional drivers” have a chip on there shoulder and don’t explain anything good info and visuals 👍🏼 and also probably a lot of guys who think there pro never pulled 3 trailers before ha! 👍🏼
Dude, you just explained the splitter better than any other person or video ever. Been looking for answers on how it's used for ages. (I'm even a heavy vehicle tech and on the Eaton, never understood) (Scania opticruise is a little different kinda but it's auto)
Driving just fine to me mate , not racing to engine or gearbox ,, perfect for a long life span on running gear, to slow for the other bloke , oh well maybe he should've gone 1st 😂,
