Why is the medium duty chassis chosen for an ambulance? In other words, what are the advantages of choosing a Freightliner chassis over a pickup truck chassis?
Absolutely none, unless you have unlimited funds available for fleet services and enjoy spending double, triple for fuel, spare parts, diesel engine technicians v. air aspirated ( gas). Our fire-based service in Northeast Florida operates a DP/DT rescue unit (ALS ambulance) out of all 65 fire stations. In addition, every engine, ladder, and marine unit is ALS. An alternator from Genuine Parts, or one from Mercedes-Benz or Ring Power, do the math.
@@dahinsoncoj That's pretty much what I was thinking. I had been under the impression that medium duty chassis ambulances were configured to carry more patients, therefore justifying the need for such a large chassis. Now I see they are pretty much configured the same way as a type I or type III ambulance. Chattanooga/Hamilton County EMS is downsizing from an International MV to an International CV. I'd like to know how much money they think they're going to save in the long run.
