In week 11 of the college football season we head up to get some mountain air in the always beautiful Boone, NC! The views were endless and the scenery alone was worth the trip. This Sun Belt clash between the App State Mountaineers and the South Alabama Jaguars may have been a snoozer, but this tour and review of Kidd Brewer Stadium sure isn’t! We hope you enjoy.

Nice video! A couple of things I would touch on is that the App tailgating scene/fan rowdiness is a whole lot of fun usually and one of my favorite atmospheres. The flip side of that is that we have gotten so used to beating so many teams badly in the sunbelt (USA, ULM, Texas St, Troy, Georgia State and coastal except for the past two years) that fan energy just doesn't show up for those easy games a lot of times. If you guys would've came to the Marshall or Coastal game last year I think you would've been blown away at the fan experience. Against easy opponents, the energy just isn't there. I hate that it's that way, but It just is. The good news is that the Sun Belt east is getting way more competitive so hopefully that will result in less boring blowout games that fans at App have been too used to seeing with some teams.
@RoadTeamReviews
@RoadTeamReviews 2 года назад
Yeah, we're also aware we came in through the side where the tailgating isn't quite as heavy. There were some really cool pieces to it, but it was most definitely a late season, uneven matchup lol. The Sun Belt is absolutely in a great spot now though! We can't wait to see how things shake up, and we'll probably find ourselves pulling for App State when we visit other Sun Belt stadium if they're playing there!

Love this video guys thanks for coming to Boone! Pretty fair review for that day but I will say the tailgating scene is actually pretty good, wish you guys had a chance to see that. Unfortunately the atmosphere can be a little inconsistent especially when we play some less successful SBC teams and when the temperature drops. I wish it weren’t that way. I’ve had friends from USC tell me the atmosphere at a bigger game was on par with the atmosphere at their games. As for the stadium itself, like most things on campus it is so geographically restricted that it’s kinda pieced together in a unique way. The whole home side of the stadium was basically pieced together 3 separate times as the program grew. That with the actual location on the side of the mountain unfortunately restricts a lot of what they can do with the space haha. The town and campus has really outgrown itself and is using almost every square inch you can in the town. There are also some gameday traditions that might not have been as noticeable if it was your first time like the quote “Welcome to the Rock” being played on the video board as the team enters, Yosef firing a rifle, and songs like Back in Black and Mountain Music. Appreciate you guys doing a review of The Rock and love your channel! Hope you guys are able to make it back to Boone for a big game!

The nick name "The Rock" came from a radio commentator back in the early 90's, this is that was explained in a you tube video / interview of David Jackson, and this nick name of our stadium has just stuck. Did not explain why he gave it, but as the last poster said, it literally sits in a bowl and on bed rock. So maybe someone else can add to this. It just fits....

App alum here. Glad y’all were able to make it up for a game. Such a beautiful campus. And your production value is awesome; really hoping your channel gets more exposure. I was up in Boone for a wedding the same day y’all were there. My friends who got there on Friday said it actually snowed a bit on that Saturday morning. Gotta love that brisk mountain air on game day!

Regarding tailgaiting, there was a huge stadium parking lot until 2019 where there are now brand new dorms. There are still a few spots around campus that have a nice scene, but they're scattered.

A bit late, but one category I think would be fun to see is y'all's thoughts on the bands of each of the schools y'all go to. Things like how often did they play? crowd engagement with them, how loud they were, etc. Bands are a huge part of gameday and a very valuable part of the stadium

One of the issues with stadium "room" is that these stadiums morph from single level, to double deck level, visitors side currently, seating space, and space in general was measured years ago when we were not all suffering from "fast food bloat"! We have, I think, 25" per seat space. I have 4 season tickets up from three last year. Why, for the extra space. For the over sold out UNC game, we needed that extra seat as, with only aluminum below your gluteus maximus and a small back rest, updating to single seats may for may not allow for the 31,500 stated seating capacity nor be cost effective. Additional seating, put in the week before, below the "loge"(sp) seats added about 3000 seats, as mandated by NCAA rules for visitor seating, especially for a Power 5 school coming to town. To pack 40,000 plus at The Rock is an accomplishment. I attended Lees-McRae and then graduated from App State before running out of my Dad's money on the "5 Year Plan" in 1982. Yes, all the places we used to hang out, hiking up to Linn Cove Viaduct before it began it's completion, Elk Park Falls(Jumped off numerous times), riding the Parkway in the Fall, heading to Blowing Rock, wet county then, hearing some of the world's renown musicians at P. B. Scott's(Look it up), actually going to class on a regular basis and my wife likes the beach, boring! I love the mountains for the same reason's you two do. It's MAGICAL!!!! Great vids, commentary and overall excellent production. Glad I hit this up tonight, till Saturday, GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to share this! Always love hearing stories and first hand experiences from true life long fans! You bring up some reasonable points about the seating structure, and definitely a smart move purchasing the extra seating too. That's awesome man! Parking was pretty easy to find, there's a huge free lot, but it's a bit far from the stadium so prepare for a long walk or wait for a shuttle. As for tailgating, we didn't have much luck finding or seeing anything too crazy. The mountaineer faithful, however believe there are some decent spots but they're scattered throughout campus. Enjoy the game!

Never heard the official story about the name the rock but....this is mine. We put in astroturf early and didn't really change it or replace it for a long time. I heard it was because of money. As it aged, the pad lost some flex so it was hard, really hard. When the weather turned cold it used to freeze. The playing surface was hard as a rock. From experience I can tell you it hurt (a lot) to fall on it. The grain on it also laid down. You could run and cut one way but the other direction was slick as ice. This is mid to late 1970's. Go App!

I was there 15 years ago and it was well entrenched by then. When I came up for a recruiting trip in 06, they were already using the Sean Connery "Welcome to the Rock" clip in the jumbotron intro. It's been referred to as the Rock since the 90s.

Where do you guys live in South Carolina? I’m in Greenville and went to App State. Every one of your criticisms is valid. West side (home side) is old and cramped. Everyone hates the east side aluminum upper deck. A lot of amenities are lacking but the football and tailgate culture there is really strong. Very fair review. I don’t know if this is why it’s called the rock but the stadium itself is built on solid bedrock. They tried for years to figure out the best way to lower the field and bring seats closer but couldn’t. It would’ve required a ton of blasting that would’ve taken too long between seasons.
@RoadTeamReviews
@RoadTeamReviews 2 года назад
We’re in the Midlands, just outside of Lexington! And yeah when we were there it seemed like a lot of renovations and new construction was taking place nearby the stadium. After seeing it in person it’s easy to see why huge substantial updates would be challenging given the geographic elements.
@dougglenn4954
@dougglenn4954 2 года назад
The problem with lowering the field is due to the numerous underground streams that run under the field. That was the reason artificial turf was installed in 1971. Prior to that the field was pretty much a quagmire. Especially after a few days of rain.

@@RoadTeamReviews We didn't play it at App until the week after beat SC in 2019. Fair assessment overall, but I do wish you would have come for a different game. For whatever reason our fans don't get up for most of the SBC West schools. The games against Marshall, Coastal, and Georgia Southern would have been a much better experience. Also, the tailgate scene is there but more spread out around campus. The route you took to walk in didn't go by the big tailgate lots. Our former play by play guy coined "The Rock" back in the 90's since the stadium is built into the mountain side. We have to blast anytime we dig down (even to install the scoreboard) so construction is very expensive. Hopefully we tear down that old seating and replace it with something more spacious and closer to the field one day.
@RoadTeamReviews

@@joshglenn2115 Thank you for the comment! This seems to be the best explanation we've seen for The Rock nickname, and makes complete sense. There were certainly other games we wanted to attend but the mid week games just make it a bit more challenging. @@RoadTeamReviews My son turned me on to this video. Thanks for making your way to App and I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. A little more insight to The Rock moniker. I'm good friends with Mike Waddell who coined the phrase and after seeing this shot him a text for clarification. He said it was a combination of what JT (my son), but was also inspired the movie. As he explained it Alcatraz was an indomitable fortress from which there is no escape for prisoners and he saw KBS as being the same for visiting teams. I agree with your overall assessment with a few remarks. I have no idea what the person who designed that upper level on the West side could have been thinking, but I've been putting up with those blasted narrow isles and rows since it was built in 1979. Once the East Stands were built in '06 we moved over there and have loved every minute. It is 1000% more comfortable in every way. Now about those metal stands. As you can probably imagine the winters in Boone are rough and can be very destructive to concrete. Water gets into the joints, freezes and expands causing cracks in the concrete. Had you gone into the lower sections you would have seen just how bad. Metal might not be the most visually pleasing structure, but it is almost a necessity. If you look closely some older SEC & ACC stadiums are built out of metal, but are covered up with a veneered structure. Thanks again for coming up. Hope you can make it back up for a game that has the fans a bit more juiced.

USA isn't really a team App fans get excited to play. They're a relatively new program and aren't exactly a powerhouse team. Go to a game against Coastal, GaSo, Marshall or even James Madison and you'll see a much more intense atmosphere. The old SoCon rivalries carried over during the move up and it shows.

20 years ago Kidd Brewer was a glorified high school stadium. Rather than tare it down and rebuild from scratch, they upgraded around the bleachers, hence the cramped feel and the ugly visitor's side. They should have at least filled it in more and wrapped the stadium in a U.

That’s actually true to a point. I played for Watauga High and until they built their new high school, Kidd Brewer was our home field. We were the only school in NC that played on Astro turf. It was great to see kids from other schools trying to play in sneakers and grass cleats sliding all over the place.
