If your going to the Duluth area… take a drive up the north shore and visit gooseberry falls split Rock light house and if you want a 7 mile hike.. you can go to Eagle mountain the highest point in Minnesota.. and you can see in the distance Lake Superior ( lowest point in Minnesota)
I take an annual trip in July/august to the North Shore. Best place to be when it’s 90 degrees with high humidity at home in WI…Have bug spray and bug head nets along in case the mosquitoes and biting flies are bad. Sometimes they are so bad they’ll eat you alive!
Wow, great video guys, we were just in ND two weeks ago! We grew up in ND and also had issues with the whole "sacagawea" vs "sakakawea" pronunciation when we lived on the East Coast. The best answer we have heard is that sacagawea came from Meriwether Lewis's journals from the expedition (he spelled her name four different ways) and this spelling is what was taught in most schools but the Hidatsa and Mandan Native Americans actually pronounce it sakakawea which is why there is Lake Sakakawea in ND as this is a more accurate translation of her name from the original native language. - Jenny and Lance
Thank you so much for providing more insight into this! We cannot tell you how much time we spent online trying to figure this out and the anxiety we had about seeming disrespectful 😅
You guys are just pump up my last year memory.. we visited South Dakota last year june. Couldn't manage time for North Dakota though. You are giving us the target to visit North Dakota as well..The wall arts; love them..
Dang cool video , Im from NW North Dakota lived here all my life. Alot of people think it's boring here but you just have to find things to do . From town 150 people and live couple miles out of town, really peaceful.
As usual you both do a great job documenting these wonderful places. My wife and I are headed to S Dakota in April. Just watched your video on custer and all surrounding area's. That state park is off the charts. You enspired my whole family to see it. Thanks for doing what you do !
Hey Jeff! That's so awesome to hear! S Dakota is such a cool state. Custer beats some of the national parks in our eyes! Check out our website also...we've got a few guides with itineraries and more things to do. We hope y'all have a great trip!
So glad I found your Dakotas videos. I'm planning a two week trip to the Dakotas for next years, which are the last two of the lower 48 states that I haven't been to.
I love your videos. We are actually about to take a road trip in the opposite direction of yours. From Michigan to Montana/Wyoming via North Dakota and Theodore Roosevelt. We were going to Theodore Roosevelt and North Dakota because we have never been to those places (as opposed to South Dakota/Black Hills where we have previously visited). I am even looking more forward to that part of the trip now after watching your video! As for the smoke - we are having overcast days from the smoke even as far east as here in Michigan. Those fires must be terrible. Enjoy Lake Superior - it is incredibly beautiful.
SWEET! I've been to 'Devils Tower' but that's the extent of my sightseeing in the Dakotas. I ran a route, for several years, delivering brown-n-serve rolls (3300 cases per trailer) to a freezer in FARGO. The only place I ever got a ticket in 20 years of trucking. If I ever make it to the 'Going to the Sun Road' I will check out the badlands and those Scotcharoos. You have to drive through OGALALA!
Another exceptional video!! And who the heck is giving u folks thumbs down?!!!! Love ur content and your vlogging style! Very easy to watch and never boring!
@@AdventuresofAplusK The only thing I can think of is if someone posts about accessing an off limits area or promotes trespassing/illegal activity. But ur stuff is epic!! Keep em coming!
You're heading into my neck of the woods . . . Minnesota! We just got back from the North Shore! I highly recommend, if you have time, to head to Grand Portage, MN and hike to High Falls (tallest waterfall in MN) and Middle Falls along the Pigeon River - the international border separating Canada and the United States. I also recommend you hike Mount Josephine in Grand Portage for an overlook of Lake Superior, Canada, the Susie Islands, and Isle Royale National Park. Be sure to stop off at Gooseberry Falls State Park, Tettegouche State Park, Temperance State Park, and, of course, Grand Marais, along your journey.
We did have a pretty bad grass fires around when your were here. Smoke could have been from that as well. Especially with it being so flat, there’s nothing to stop it
You 2 are sooo down to earth, my kind of people. Love your videos., very well done!! Always looking for the next one. Keep up the good work and stay healthy. Say hi to Kona for me.🐶
Haha! Awesome name for that coffee shop. Maybe there is a clan of North Dakota Youngbloods that I was never told about. Great video of your travels across ND. This state always seems to get downplayed but nice work showing that it has great things to offer. Enjoyed your selection of activities and great work on pulling this edit together. We did a Dakotas Vacation in 2017 but primarily focused on TRNP when in North Dakota. We all enjoyed the park greatly and thought it was really underrated. Spent two full days there, one for the North Unit and one for the South Unit. It was insanely hot though, so we couldn’t hike much. However, this trip had one of my favorite campsites ever. It was a walk-in site and was right of the banks of the Little Missouri River and across the river was a wall of the Badlands. We even had a solitary bison stroll within feet of our tent at like 5 am.
North Dakota was awesome! Those Youngbloods know what they're doing with the coffee! Oh ya it can get super warm up there! That campsite sounds pretty epic! Thanks, Michael!
This was yet another amazing vlog guys! You guys are so excited and passionate about every place you visit! Your trips are so well researched and so educational because of it! You’ve always got me drooling with your food experiences! Also the sequence you did at the Mario mural was awesome! 😁😂
Fascinating to see as my experience in North Dakota was just a drive across I-94 trying to cross the country from west to east during a move. Didn't have time to stop at all other than gassing up the car. From what I saw it appears pretty but yeah... don't know much about it apart from some old photos and stories of winters when my parents lived there a short time.
Love your unique travel blog. You did North Dakota very well! As a resident of ND even I learned somethin about this state. When you visit the North Shores of Lake Superior I hope the ashes from of Canada and the Western fires will be lifted and you can enjoy the lakes beauty.
My mother used to make a gooey Rice Crispy-type dessert -- and 55 years later I learned they are called Scotcheroos! When we spent the night in Fargo nearly 20 years ago en route to the Black Hills, we really enjoyed the Roger Maris Museum located in a local shopping mall. We hope to visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park (along with Glacier) in Sept 2023.
I remember that cow sculpture! 1st drive across I94 was in the bleak of winter in the 90's. Looking forward to your further adventures from the shores of Gitchee Gumee.
Thanks for the City Name Mural info!! We always like to find those too! Will have to check out their website! Loved following along your North Dakota adventure!!!!🥰
Just found your channel when googling North Dakota for a trip we plan to do this summer. I like the way you present historical and other details about the places you are visiting. . Looking forward to watching more!
We’re just about to cross the Dakotas in our six-week-old LTV! Thanks for the great suggestions… we will hit a few of them, but especially the Knife River Indian Village! Oh, happy retirement after 50 years nonstop!
If you guys make it to Michigan I recommend a few things.. most importantly get a Pastie at Jean Kay’s in Marquette or Lehtos around the bridge. Make sure you go to Marquette for a day and drive presque isle city park and climb hogs back. Go to Pictured Rocks and do the Chapel Loop. Also if you have time head up into the Keweenaw. Lived in Michigan my whole life and those are the must do’s.
Also from Michigan! Make sure you explore the LP too. Traverse City, Sleeping Bear, Leelanau, Grand Rapids... all beautiful areas. Detroit is really neat and is experiencing a lot of urban revival. Skip the Flint area and don’t be suckered into the thumb- I promise you, turnip rock is a letdown. Ann Arbor is also a cool city area. So excited to see you show our beautiful state. Michigan gets a bad rap but it has a lot to offer!
Hello from the best state in the United States, North Dakota. Glad you liked your trip in North Dakota. The Peace Gardens are another gotta see location here in ND.
We just spent the night in Bismarck, went to the Painted Canyon Overlook AND stopped and got a scotcharoo...however my friend makes them and always called them peanut butter chocolate bars lol! Either way...SO GOOD!!🤩😍
Great video guy!! I wished now we would have went to North Dakota when we went on our South Dakota trip. Oh well guess that just means we will have to go again sometime!😄
There's a free Roger Maris museum in the West Acres Mall in Fargo if you guys come back and are interested in that, it's a wall of glass cases with memorabilia. You also showed one of the sculptures from the Enchanted Highway, those are really fun to follow down to Regent! Fisherman's Dream is my favorite sculpture. The little village in Jamestown where the buffalo is is nice (we were there in -20 weather and it was closed lol). Jamestown is also the hometown of Louis L'Amour, a famous author of Western-type novels.
We wondered what that sculpture was for! We saw signs for the Enchanted Highway and wish we could've stopped this time. We love sculptures and finding art in random places!
@@AdventuresofAplusK It's neat if you're in the area, but I wouldn't make a special trip! There's a place called Black Butte nearby, where we saw a herd of about 100 whitetail deer, I'd never seen that many before - but it's in the middle of nowhere lol
Came across your channel not to long ago, very cool stuff. One of the better travel videos. Kinda cool your coming to Michigan. I live west of Detroit, going to Holland 24th for a few days, very cool. Hint: in Sagatuck theres a "hidden lake front beach" you have to hike a mile to get to it.
The Sculpture of the geese flying is the start of the Enchanted Highway, it is 20(?) some large metal sculptures along the road. Well worth the detour.
So cool that y'all got to see my home state!!! I live about 30 miles from Grand Forks which is about an hour and a half from Fargo. Btw, that green Fargo sign you showed us is the classic Fargo sign that everybody sees. Also, your dogs name, Kona is a classic North Dakota dog name. Here, our most popular dog names are Kona, Kota, Koda, and Dakota.
Great video, the soup look and sounded delish and I know that I would love the butter and brown sugar lefse! One of my grandmothers family came from Finland and she would make a brown sugar sandwich every once in a while for me and me sister. I wonder if brown sugar on bread or rolled up in a lefse is a Nordic thing? Can't wait for the Minnesota vlog but really looking forward to see what you guys do in my home state of Michigan. Safe travels.
Hello Adventurers😊😊😊, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is so AWESOME with all the wildlife. I loved the Bison but I really enjoyed the prairie dog's! Those murals in Fargo were REALLY COOL, and it brings me back to my time in Fargo. So now your heading into beautiful Minnesota! I have seen a LOT of Minnesota and you will love this AWESOME state. Some highlights I would recommend is exploring the lakes that MN is known for, I spent some time in Detroit Lakes, Isthaca State Park where the Mississippi River begins, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is AWESOME as it is WAY above Lake Superior, and nearby is Betty's Pies...you have gotta check that place out, further north is Voyegers National Park...ohhh WOW so much water! You are going to LOVE this state. I can't wait to see the video👍👍👍👍👍!
Looking forward to seeing your MN north shore videos. Used to spend some time there and it is great. Gooseberry falls, split rock light house I assume would be on your list, and are great places to stop
Have dreamt of visiting TRNP. You have the best video on it! If you truly had to rank - thoughts on TRNP vs Badlands NP? It’s so funny to me that Scotcheroos are regional! My hubby and I make them at Christmas with family in Wisconsin lol!
Thank you both for the WONDERFUL videos you make!! They are amongst the best I've seen on RU-vid! I have a suggestion for you though. You should include in your description above a PayPal link for those of us who would like to make a small donation to you for your videography efforts. Thanks so much. Best wishes and SAFE travels!! Happy Trails to you!! :-)
I work with a doctor that grew up in ND and his mom makes lefsa, so I am lucky enough to get lefsa at least here and there, and I love it. I make it with butter and sugar 😋
Thank you for doing this video. It had brought back soooooooo many great memories for me and my time with my birth family. I hope to go back some time soon to see family and go back to a lot of the famiy homesteads. North Dakota is my 2nd home state. Ohhh and in the wise words of my dearly departed great aunt (in the 90's and up) have given the capital building the nickname of "Penis of the Plains". Why? When it was built there were no large trees around the building. LOL
A & K: Hey…where’s the Tacos and Ice Cream..Dang..my favorite parts…Being from Seattle ,have been enjoying your videos for some time Now..You both do such a great job…have fun and stay safe!!
the lefse looks a lot like our dutch pancake( pannenkoek ) wich is a little thicker then a crepe. i like to eat them just like u did but cold, butter and brown sugar, or warm with syrup or maple syrup
Keep the great VLOGs coming! Three observations...... 1. I was thinking that the longest time you guys have spent apart in the last 5 months was when Kat went up to the ND Capital Observation Deck......finally got some "ME TIME!" 2. I figured out a way for your guys to get to 100k subs quickly. Since you both are truly the nicest people in the world and you get along SO well (I am being sincere here).....you should film your next big marital spat (if you ever have one....) where one of you throws your cell phone across the van in frustration and Kona is trying desperately to leave the scene......I promise all of you 66.8k subs would tell all their friends and family that A PLUS K is "must see tv!" 3. You guys decided not to spray paint in one of the designated places in the Bismarck Art Alley.....HOWEVER.....KAT should have taken the opportunity to spray paint an A PLUS K mural on that awesome blue trash can behind her at minute 28.44.......that would have made the shot way better and a great way to wrap up the VLOG. Just saying......
Haha it’s weird to be without each other! And I’m pretty sure no one wants to see our bad moods 😂 I think we would lose subscribers if people saw how stressed out we get! 😜
This is bonkers...I somehow just came across you guys, and I live in Bismarck! If you come back through, you should definitely check out the Lewis and Clark riverboat tour! It's pretty awesome and tells you even more about the history. Also, in the basement of the Zimmerman's furniture building, pretty much across from art alley has loads of history with elevators they used during the prohibition. As for the food, lefse is definitely best with butter and regular sugar, and Knoephla soup is made the very best at Kroll's diner! (The secret ingredient is cinnamon 😉) Absolute best comfort food, for sure! (Next to tator-tot casserole, of course!)
I love getting to see all these sights through y'all! Love that Kona got to join you more this time too! Unfortunately the way your mics are set up for the eating always causes my misophonia to go crazy and I have to fast forward through. 😪
Still watching, so idk if you found out or not. The smoke is so bad here because the fires up in Winnipeg. We get smoke from the Canada fires every summer around here.
How do you pronounce that phonetically? That is how we saw it spelled, but saw so many pronunciations from a variety of people, including Native Americans, which was mega confusing.
We will, but off camera with family. We have been to Chicago many times (all of my extended family is near there), but our time in that area is always spent resting, catching up on work, and with family. One day we’ll make a video!
There are a lot of great travel vlogs, but your focus on hiking in natural beauty is what made me subscribe. You give a lot of energy in paying respect to the places you visit so your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Good vibes, Godspeed, and Cheers to you both!
I love your sharing of regional foods - Scotcheroos are to die for and I can’t wait to try that soup. Also, I love that Adam’s favorite North Dakotan is not one of the sports stars but the judge who led the way to school desegregation. Very cool. I am really looking forward to your Minnesota North Shore video. It’s one of my very favorite places. 😀❤️
Aaaah the prarie dogs - sooooo cute! You did so well with the footage (again) of the bison rolling in the dirt, I remember similar footage from you time in South Dakota last summer and thought you guys were so lucky, but you've captured it again! ❤️ I agree about the landscape transformation between Montana and here, but for me, I'll never forget crossing from Colorado to Utah for the first time on a tour (so wasn't expecting it) and it changes so quickly! I always thought the DAR was something the Gilmore Girls made up... upon hearing the Maltese Cross Cabin was taken over by them in 1959. The earth lodge was fantastic, I remember learning on my visit to Kenya that the women are also the ones responsible for building the houses... if memory serves me correctly, only pregnant and frail women were excused. It's fascinating to compare different times and/or cultures and see how different things can be - certainly in the UK, the building trade is sadly seen as a 'mans' job... something which as the Careers lead in my school, I'm always trying to quash! That Super Mario montage may well be my most favourite thing I've watched of you guys to date. I LOVED how it all came together, but if anyone saw you both doing that, I bet they'd have thought you were nuts!!! I also grew up with a Nes at first, then a N64 and adored playing the Mario games... that may have played into why I loved that scene so much! ❤️ The knoephla soup definitely looks like something you'd get from a German beer hall.
We got so lucky to catch that bison when we did! The contrast with southern Utah to Colorado is pretty insane too! Hahaha love Gilmore girls, I totally remember them mentioning that on the show now! Isn’t it so amazing to hear about women kicking butt?! Especially many years ago when women hardly had any rights! So glad you loved the Mario scene! Thank the lord no one was around to witness that! 😂😂
Thank you for highlighting the history and traditions of the Native American tribes in the areas where you visited. It is neat to learn about the original inhabitants of the area and I think you guys do a great job showing the indigenous peoples respect with showcasing their history.
That means a lot, thank you! We really enjoy learning Native American history and are trying to share as much as we can. We think their history is incredibly important!
So great! What were you and T.R. talking about Adam :) ? I know I'm probably a broken record but maybe new folks who read the comments will appreciate the fact that I love the mix of nature, history, culture food and heart your channel provides. No matter my mood, I am always smiling and inspired after watching you all adventuring around our beautiful country
Great episode! Some absolutely beautiful scenery. TR national park is definitely overlooked by many. TR is a giant of our nation, often under-appreciated I think. For those of us who love the outdoors, traveling, exploring, public lands, etc.... we really have TR to thank. Knife River looked really cool, never heard of it! The Lewis& Clark expedition is one of the most fascinating parts of our country for me; read a couple really good books about it recently. Adam must really love Kathryn to share a scotcharoo!!! DIdn't know the non-dome style capital info. Very interesting! The observation deck was really neat! Fargo looks interesting! The murals were cool! The Knoephla Soup looked awesome!
Another great video. My wife and I love how much research you do on the places you visit. We also love the format of adventure, food and history. Keep up the great work. And we hope this new career choice is working out well so far.
Wanted you guys to know that I just got back from a week in SD and ND. I went in part because I was inspired by your videos. Now I can say that I have greater appreciation for how much work you must put into getting all these shots. Nothing compares with being there, but you do a wonderful job capturing on film the many locations you visit. I'm sure many will be inspired to visit these places because of your work -- as I have been. Thank you!
Hi George! We hope you had a great time! And thank you for appreciating the work that goes into these, it's a lot harder than it looks and we try our best to share these places as best as we can!
I have fond memories of going to Theodore national park on field trips as a kid! It was fun to see it again. ❤️ Also, thank you for saying bison and not buffalo! 🤣
you guys inspired me to travel and i set on a solo road trip from NC to over 20 states and 15 national parks, ND included. loved medorra, really nice people. i visited in May and loved every second and never felt alone. thank you for all the tips, info and inspiration! i'm 25 and never thought about doing a solo till i watched your channel. thanks again!
That is way awesome and sounds like an incredible trip!!! We are so happy that our videos played a role in your adventure, that means so much to us! ❤️ What was your favorite stop?
@@AdventuresofAplusK for north dakota, it was medora. had long conversations with the locals since it wasn't tourists season yet and told me many dramas in town, like the fire fighters doing a control burn and accidently burning 2 out of 3 of the cypress trees in town. apparently the whole town went in a uproar over it. lol but over all favorite is hard to pin down. loved the big 5 in utah and the black hills and badlands of SD, and idaho was just overall amazing with sand dunes, ice caves and beautiful gorge in twin falls and snow. death valley i made friends in and loved the ruins in new mexico. i guess south dakota as a whole was my favorite. i am already planning a trip to iceland now for next year, i have travel fever now!
We LOVED South Dakota too! Especially the Black Hills! And we hear Iceland is amazing, so stoked to hear you have the travel bug now. We both didn't grow up traveling much, so it's never too late to start!
@@AdventuresofAplusK I spent my childhood traveling up and down the east coast only but never making it over the Appalachian mountains other than Tennessee. its nice to see places outside of east coast. I almost want to move to SD but charlotte is my home. since the start of last year i now only have 5 states left to see. (and of course revisit as you never see it all at once) keep up the good work and thank you again for inspiring me!
