Road Trip America: Beamed Up By the Mars, PA Flying Saucer

If you’re on a road trip that passes near Pittsburgh, PA, and you love roadside attractions that are out of this world, then the Mars Flying Saucer is a must-see! Sitting right in the middle of town, the flying saucer acts as the centerpiece not just for the community, but also for NASA’s celebration of the Martian New Year! We stopped into town to learn more about the flying saucer, the Martian New Year events, and made some new friends along the way when we grabbed some coffee and candy from shops near the UFO. Plus we visited an old rail station that’ll fascinate any railbuff visiting the area. It’s all stuffed into this week’s episode!

Charming is right! Between the saucer, the train depot, the coffee, the candy, and a cool brewery that we didn’t have time to drop in on during our visit, you can make a whole day of it there!

Glad you’re enjoying them! It’s a fun little part of the culture over here, there’s unique little things peppered all across the country. Sometimes they’re really remote - and we have a bunch of obscure stuff like that planned - but a lot of them are community features like this one! And those are obviously super fun to visit.

Wish the trolley line was still in use! Pittsburgh used to have a very impressive trolley/interurban network. At one point in the early 1900's it was possible to travel the whole way from Pittsburgh to Chicago using only streetcars (albeit with many transfers and a much longer travel time than taking the train).

@@JustaQuickDetour Probably quite a few! Also a side note, at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum near Washington they have a few restored shelters similar to this one that were waiting areas during the streetcar days, as well as the old Wexford station from this same trolley line. After rail service ended the building was used as a post office, and then a deli before being transported to the museum and restored a few years ago. Definitely worth checking out if you have a chance!

I live here! That little dog you see is pepper! He was voted the mars dog this year. The candy store closed after a few months. The ufo is me and my friends fav place to go in the summer. I've lived here my whole life and never thought this place was that cool! Well, welcome to mars, and thanks for visiting! I hope you come again!

Aw Pepper! Congrats on the honor of Mars Dog! We loved visiting and came back for the Martian New Year festival last year, had such a nice time! It's a really great town. We spotted a really cool mini golf course near the high school, too, so I think we'll be back sooner than later to try that out. Mars keeps drawing us back in, it seems.

I love towns with themes like this. I've always wanted to go to Roswell, NM, which is probably somewhat similar to Mars. Also the Twister Museum in Wakata, OK!
