My Japanese teacher who was born on (or is it in?) Kyushu told my class this incredible story about her parents. Her dad was a kamikazi pilot in WWII and her mother lived in Kokura, in Saga-ken. Originally, the atomic bomb was supposed to be dropped on Kokura but because it was cloudy over the city, the pilot flew to Nagasaki instead. So her mom's life was saved because of cloudy weather. Then, Japan surrendered not too long after. Meanwhile, her dad was set to fly out to attack the Americans but the day before he was set to fly out, Japan surrendered, ending the war and all the remaining kamikazi pilots were relieved of duty. So basically, if the dropping of the bomb had been one day later, most likely her dad would have died fighting the Americans and her mom would have died in the atomic blast. She was born not too much longer around 1950 if I remember correctly. So one day was the entire difference from her and her kids never being born. Absolutely incredible - you could see how grateful she was to be alive when she told the story. I don't believe in destiny but that must have been one hell of a coincidence!
No matter where you go, may it be in Japan or other places, you always are able to find the most picturesque views, interesting cuisine, and fascinating thing. Here's to safe travels to you both and lots more subscribers to your channel! 🙂🥂🇯🇵
I think the seat belt thing is so you remember to turn the car off with the start/stop button, otherwise you might get out and walk away with your car still "on". The engine starts back up to let you know the car is still "on" and you need to turn it off.
I was crying my ass off when I went to the Kamikaze museum in Kagoshima. Reading the individual letters of soldiers(Kids) writing to their parents before they went to their deaths. It was eye-opening. So happy you guys got to experience it!
36:53 I had flashbacks of my time in Japan. Little train station and train coming in... the quality of the light of the sun... I was never in Kagoshima but it evoked the same sensation I had when wandering around.
Guys - we had a similar experience with a hire car in Hungary recently - everything the same up to your unbuckling the seatbelt.... in our case when we opened the boot (trunk) - the car turned back on! :-) As ever, enjoyable video. Metric is centimetres and imperial is inches :-)
@@AshrakAhmed I did the same thing! Haha. It just seemed like such a cool area and I can't wait to go back and explore more of the prefecture. We started our 3 week Japan trip in kagoshima having no idea it would be so impactful
This was brilliant, made me laugh loads too! Currently in Tokyo and heading to kagoshima in a couple of weeks, so this has got me all excited, can't wait!
That’s a good point about the black cars. I honestly don’t remember seeing many black cars besides taxis with the multiple times I’ve been to Japan. Also that love hotel/AirBnb is SICK. That shower room is so cool. It’s gaudy and tacky. LOVE IT.
Your car starting problem is actually a safety thing. Your car is not shut off it is just in rest mode, so when you go to leave it starts up to remind you to properly shut it off.
~Wait; *how* can ^this comment^ have been posted "2 days ago", when K&E only just uploaded the video *t o d a y...??!* [ Ohhhh, i'm *so* confused ({; D ...! ]
@@tamihz9746 ~Ahhhh, okay - n o w i 'get it': and that's truly pretty cool actually. Thank you, btw, for clue-ing me in there; i just couldn't figure how it might've been possible ({; D ...!
31:22 In a Tokyo 7-Eleven my friend bought a sandwich that was just white bread with whipped cream and strawberries in it. She didn't like it so gave it to me. I thought it was odd, but tasted alright.
Often videos on subjects like this people hit dislike on principal alone. I am surprised this didn't get more dislikes. It is a testament to how much your audience loves you to see beyond that and actually listen to your feelings regarding this difficult matter. A very touching video.
The stop-off feature isn't a full engine shutdown, a lot of cars with this are just killing a few cylinders and disengaging the transmission to reduce heat and wear while extended parking, but the motor still runs a little for electronics and battery, removing your seatbelt is a reminder to turn it all the way off as far as i can tell, mine just makes noise to tell me it still running
(Re: end of video) I'm with Eric on the fish. I was once entertained at an authentic Japanese restaurant in England but when I looked at the neighbouring tables, I am sure the fish was still moving. Not happy. When the waiter arrived the chap on my left said 'I am a vegetarian', and so a new menu was produced. Hallelujah! Guess who became a (temporary) convert. And the food was amazing !
I had sand bath every time I visited Beppu (that will be 3 times now) and loved it every time! Planning to do this in Kagoshima whenever I get to go further down on my next trip to Kyushu!
I was reminded that the first, and last, time I saw sand bathing was in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire (and its remakes). Of course it was in Lavaridge Town at the foot of a volcano. It makes sense since Hoenn is modeled after Kyushu, but sand bathing is something I have not seen in the anime I have watched since those games.
The war time in Japan feels, and is ages ago that I cannot relate to it in a real way even though I grew up there and heard stories from my own grandparents experiences being young kids during the war. Even harder to imagine being the enemy of westerners, being a U.S. citizen myself today. Such hard times are still very real and current at other parts of the world. Seeing westerners go learn about the enemy of another time and having empathy and sympathy for those individuals who likely fought against their own ancestors or at least their own kind... is the most human thing I've seen in a while. Thank you, friends. ✌
Yea, it's all so hard to imagine. We are American but live in Japan. I am friends with some older people here who remember their homes and towns being destroyed by American fire bombings. How is it possible things have changed so much in a single lifetime? -E
I've seen videos with the warm sand thing before and loved the idea! I'm glad y'all tried it out. It makes me even more sure I want to visit there some day! Is Kyde a shell person? I know I couldn't resist taking a shell from every beach I visit!
I can't even imagine what those toku pilots were thinking moments before they killed themselves and whoever else they hit. Heavy is very accurate way to feel about all that
It was one of those future keys where it was already in her pocket. Also, couldn't a dinging sound work in a less dangerous way, or maybe just shutting off? Also, no one in Japan carjacks anyone haha. -E
@0:40 Black absorbs all of the wavelengths of color light. Therefore, no light wavelength is reflected off a black object. Black is absence of color light.
But seriously though I respect the hell out of you guys fir doing your homework and showing us the history behind this topic. I've always loved you guys for actually informing your viewers/teaching them something they maybe didn't know about Japan + other countries. Thank you.
Thank you both so much for another warm, affectionate and funny video; always worth the wait. When speaking about what the pigs are fed on, I thought you said, "teeth". Yuk, I thought and how do they eat teeth? Then I decided you said gee. In the end tea didn't sound so strange.
really enjoyed the sand bath part. What exactly makes it so warm, is it just the sun attracted to the fact that the sand is dark and absorbs light? great video guys. I've been getting caught up on some of your vids as of late.
I get made fun of a lot for getting emotional in museums involving tragic/emotional history/historical memorabilia. Seeing you guys FEEL as you were talking about those pilots and their letters struck me in such a way that I have a newborn respect for you. Its reassuring to know that there are people that get emotional as well, and even more so that you two try to understand it. It's not just a thing that happened; these were living humans with families. I couldnt imagine doing what they did. Ever.
So much to like in this video - my high point for Eric was, "I'm gonna press a ham!" And for Kyde: "He's going through the car wash," with accompanying dance.
I love how we transition from Eric talking about the cute southern-most station to “stupid idiot kids have been sitting here ringing the bell the whole time” 🤣😂
46:26 My car will turn the dome lights on when I put it in park and switch off the ignition..Yer piggy car must have something in its setup menu: 'do this when this.' Still a weird setting.
Finally booked my holiday and hotels. Going kagoshima (for Chiran and volcano funtimes), nagasaki and hiroshima.. Time for sadness... Have you two been to the hiroshima peace museum? It's very much like the chiran one by the sounds of it, hits super hard.
We went to the Hiroshima peace museum in 2010 or something, it was really well done. They had these videos of older folks who lived through the attack telling their story, it was incredible to listen to them. I could watch just those videos for hours. -E
Of note: the car thing.... it likely turns on when you take the belt off as a reminder to turn the key off and take it with you... so you don’t accidentally leave the key on (which might kill the battery) or leave the keys in the car
chris, i was watching a video on mercedes benz and their "eco-idle" mode and it does the same thing. It also turns the engine on when you put it in reverse, open the door and when climate control is needed. I'm thinking it would come in handy in the 3rd world or ghettos in usa where carjackings happen.
38:26 There's a similar situation in Scotland. The most Northerly station in the UK is Thurso, but the end of the line is Wick. Deets here … ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OvUkhNQOO_Q.html
In regards to the car... Could it turning back on be a reminder that you haven't turned the car fully "off?" Maybe there's a difference between the car taking a break and powering down to 0 rpm versus being totally turned off by using the key/power button (whichever that model has). Hope that hypothesis makes sense.
Yea, that's been mentioned and would be an interesting idea except the key was already in her pocket, so why wouldn't it just turn off....or beep? Haha
That looks like a processed version of a "Cream Finger Doughnut" (www.greggs.co.uk/sweet-treats/cream-finger-doughnut), which I've been buying from bakers in England since the 1970s.
@@kydeanderic Probably just to make the driver turn it off. If the car turns itself off and it has a problem it could turn itself off while you're driving. It's more simple just to remind the driver it's still on.
You guys are really doing a great job with these travel videos. I also love the food ones. Have you ever thought of pitching a show idea to one of the big companies like say Fox? The food and travel shows are popular and you guys have mastered the making of a 2 in 1 show T & F. Maybe clean up Mrs. Potty mouth to a PG 13 rating. I don't think I'm alone when I say the content you show is TV worthy. Keep up the great soon to be a TV series shows. I'm even revisiting some of my favorites. Tonight's a K & E night. ✌️
I suspect the videos would change quite a lot if someone else was involved in the production. I also suspect they'd hire younger better looking people before us, hahahahahah. -E
@@kydeanderic no no no do not be so hard on yourself. You guys make a great couple funny smart loving you show genuine interest about everything and your way of making the show works. You know the saying if it isn't broke don't fix it. As your self imposed manager I want you to try. Metaphorically speaking, I will show you the money lol. I'm confident you guys are onto something good here. Besides everyone loves a tall guy and pretty girl and I'm not just saying that cause I'm 6'5" it's been proven a tall guy will get a job before the short guy does. Never hurts to try. I'm not trying to be funny I honestly think you have something special
How far from Tokyo by car?? Miles/hours I'm on my way over to Tokyo from USA and I intend to rent a car and cruise! That way is where my Wagyu beef comes from👍
