Well it's easier to do some trigonometry than knowing the impact of a jump and how much that car can take.

He didn't make assurance that it will not damage the car. He only assured the tragectory will cross the object across. Science can't provide assurance on impact and damage on the object without knowing the stability of the object. Not to mention they didn't hit the recommended speed as well.

​@@JanahanBalasinghamYeah but the goal wasn't to jump the river and hence destroy the car. The goal was to jump the river and continue driving. So physics genius guy should have factored that in. Why they didn't have one person drive and the others cross on foot makes no sense. Nor did physics genius guy consider the impact, gravity and downward force (hence impact) or anything about shock absorbance. He didn't even bother considering other factors like the car's age, or capacity to withstand downforce impact. So he basically made the calculation based on the simplest geometry, as if they were driving a theoretical vehicle that could withstand any amount of damage. I'd be surprised if he's passing first-year physics, or if he'd even passed high school mathematics. He spends most of the movie appearing to sound intelligent and smoking cannabis, as well as alluding to his intake of other pills. I wouldn't take advice about a highly dangerous maneuver, from a perpetually stoned drug addict, just because he "talks the talk". They'd have been smarter to find an alternate route. But then again this is just a silly movie, and, had this plot point not occurred, the rest of their hijinks wouldn't have, either.
