Overview of the second leg of my May 2021 cross-country road trip that took me primarily through Nevada, Wyoming, and Nebraska, with a little bit of Utah and Missouri sprinkled in as well. I go over the roads, towns, and parks that I visited and discuss the highlights and lowlights of the trip.

I just went on my first road trip ever. I moved to the US about a decade ago and never really got out of California (except for vegas) but I fell in love with your channel a couple of months ago and that motivated me to finally hit the roads and go explore this beautiful and BIG country... I first picked the four corner states trip following the advice from your video on it. Loved arches, LOVED Canyonlands (skipped the grand canyon lol) Zion, Santa Fe, Sedona... it’s all breathtaking! Thankfully everything went as planned, your video on hotel chains also helped and haven’t thought of which trip I’ll go next but I can’t wait to do many more.

I’ve lived in Arizona for 11 years and I’ve only been to the Grand Canyon twice. I went there for the first time a year after I moved here, and I thought it was pretty impressive then, and the second time I went was just to do stuff I missed out on the first time I went. But since I’ve already done pretty much all that you can do there, I have no plans to go back there in the near future.

Great road trip, Kyle! I did a big solo road trip last year, which led me from my home base of Milwaukee up to US hwy 2 through northern Minnesota, North Daktoa, and Montana. Then spent some time in the Panhandle of Idaho then drove down breathtaking US Route 95 down the western border of Idaho. Then looped back around through Wyoming, Nebraska, and Iowa. My car actually broke down in Ogalalla, NE so I spent some time exploring that western Nebraska town while the car was getting repaired. Thanks for inspiring me to get off of the interstates and exploring the quiet US highway system and back roads.

In our road trip in an RV from Chicago to Colorado and Utah, my sister-in-law wanted to cross Kansas off her state list. So we got off of I-80 in Kearney and took Rte 34 across the southern border of the state. Ate at Runza in McCook. When we got to Haigler, we took dirt roads into Kansas and found the KS/CO/NE Tripoint marker. Again, in a 28' RV. Good times...

A few years ago after visiting Scotts Bluff National Monument we headed into the town to get something to eat. We pulled into a restaurant parking lot when a young man called out to us--he had seen our license plate and wanted to talk about "home". He had grown up only about 20 miles from our home before work took him to Scotts Bluff. We love these little moments as we travel. We would suggest the next time you are on 36 going through Missouri that you stop in Marceline to see all the Walt Disney related sites and just a little east of there is the birthplace of General Pershing. Thanks for your suggestions on the 2 NE state parks...might just get added to our list!

Nevada is a trip! My wife is from there and it's full of great weirdness. The wide open skies are amazing in the midwest. It's just flat horizon in every direction. I'm in Oregon, and there's so much geography poking up, it's hard to get a horizon line like that of the midwest. I can't wait to hit the road again.

You missed Valentine in Nebraska. It has a wooded area that I think you would enjoy. As far as ranches in the west of Nebraska and cornfields in the east, there is a very interesting geographical phenomenon that takes place there. It's called the 100th meridian west. This paragraph from Wikipedia describes it best and why ranching is found to the west and farming to the east: In the central Great Plains, the meridian roughly marks the western boundary of the normal reach of moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, and the approximate boundary (although some areas do push the boundary slightly farther east) between the semi-arid climate to the west and the humid continental (north of about 37°N) and humid subtropical (south of about 37°N) climates to the east. The type of agriculture west of the meridian typically relies heavily on irrigation. Historically the meridian has often been taken as a rough boundary between the eastern and western United States.

The only critique is that you called Runza a “snack” food 😂 when I’ve literally eaten there for dinner twice this past week. It’s a local favorite but them Don and Millie’s cheese Frenchies are a childhood favorite too I still enjoy 😊 Western Nebraska is an unknown oasis of beautiful sand hills and peaceful spots to visit that are unknown to most even residents of the Nebraska who live on eastern side of the state. Some cool side trips I recommend along with those in this video are starting at Courthouse Rock, then driving to Chimney Rock, then Scott’s Bluff. You can see each bluff formation from each destination and it’s a fun day trip. Then go stay and watch the sunset at Lake McConaughy outside Ogallala and spend a day on its sandy beaches. I recommend a jet ski to jet around the lake and find some fun private sandy beach 🏖 Other cool spots are Smith Falls outside Valentine Nebraska which is the largest falls in Nebraska and also connects with Niobrara river which is great for day Canoe trips fun for any ages. Heading east towards Omaha there’s Platte River state park which is a fun city get away along the Platte River. If you’re into museums they have the Air and Space Museum right down the street and of course the Henry Doorly Zoo 30 min north which literally is all it’s cracked up to be.

I truthfully have only been on I-15 through Nevada. Thankfully it is a short drive after you leave Vegas to St George, UT. Some interesting things to see on that drive but you can't wait to get to St George sometimes you don't appreciate it. Wyoming is interesting because you see the Rockies begin to change especially when you get near Montana. Wyoming is similar somewhat to what Colorado used to be. Mountains and Cowtowns. Some of those rodeos in Wyoming are worth a visit. Wyoming gas their own cowboy culture. Nebraska...Omaha is nice. You see the brown turn to green Fun to start counting trees as you go through it.

I beg to differ. Grand Island is awesome. The highest point is Tornado hill, behind the high school. It's where the debris was piled from the four tornados that hit in one night, and is the only place the kids have to sled down in winter The western part of the city where its more open is the twister path. Fonner park and stolley road and the prairie museums and the friendliness of the people are what I look forward to seeing every last week in June.

The High Plains and the interior of the country is fascinating. It’s also home to a lot of history, actually. I grew up in north central Oklahoma, which is pretty desolate, but still very close to OKC and civilization. I had never road-tripped out west to the High Plains until a couple of years ago. I had only seen it in a plane flying to California. Lol. I’m also a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, and we’re very, very glad to have Nebraska on our football schedule again for the next two years. Used to be one of the best rivalries in the country. Nebraskans and Nebraska football fans are some of the nicest people in America. Really nice people. Oklahomans have much respect for our friends up in Nebraska.

For anyone who's ever driven though Nebraska, the drive seems to take forever! I used to think Iowa was bad.

I was a weather forecaster for a private weather company, that forecast road and pavement conditions for all the DoT's and DoR's in the northern tier states. This requires extensive knowledge of elevation. Driving across Nebraska, I had my wife check our GPS, and it provided elevation data. I am completely serious when I say, after each hour of driving, I was almost always within 10 feet, guessing how high we were. It was uncanny.

Another great video, Kyle. My wife and I are planning a trip to Maine later this year and I’m really excited about that. I have a friend who’s got a couple of homes there and we’ll be staying at one of her places. Should be a fun drive from Southeast OH/WV border. It’s about 15 hour drive.

I want to visit Toadstool Geologic Park in the extreme NW of Nebraska. There is a place called Smith Falls State Park about 20 miles east of Valentine, Nebraska that I stopped at with 3 kids ( a great middle of nowhere stop if going to Badlands in SD coming from the south east)... that turned out to be one of the nicest places we've ever visited & one of the most middle of nowhere places there is. Spent the evening after the last eclipse under a natural spring fed waterfall and Niobrara Wild & Scenic River. A very interesting ride in a mostly uninteresting surrounding area is US75 from South of Sioux City, SD (nice to visit Stone State Park in Iowa, just east of there) to Omaha, NE rolls over uniquely shaped potbelly loess hills through several Native American Tribes. US75 is a very nice ride, while I-29 over the river in Iowa could have you about to fall asleep except right around Council Bluffs.

Kyle I love the video but please tell me-were you ever concerned about running out of gas? How do you deal with that in such remote areas?
@horseman942
@horseman942 3 года назад
Towns aren't that far apart even in rural NV. Just fill up when you get down to half a tank.
@GeographyKing
@GeographyKing 3 года назад
It's not *that* remote. I don't think I was ever more than 170 miles from the nearest gas station and most cars get at least 250-300 miles per tank. I get about 400 miles or so per tank.
@derbagger22

Times have changed. Some pumps will work with credit cards 24 hours. Cars get much better gas mileage and cell service covers most of the country. 30 years ago, it was much more an adventure. Not so much now. Prepare well and you'll always be ok...

@@horseman942 Yup drive through NV fairly often. I think the longest I went without a gas station was on 375 and there's signs letting you know no gas for whatever miles so I guess if you ignore that and don't top off you might be in a bit of a pickle

Next time you are going through northern MO on Hwy 36 you should definitely make time for St. Joseph. So many things to do right downtown; could easily spend one day at each museum and historic district there.

"Green River and Rock Springs western rough?" You are far too kind, Kyle. The only bigger dump in the state of Wyoming might be Rawlings. On second thought, it's a 3 way tie.

Except that the town is "Rawlins." It was named for US Grant's Chief Engineer who was later in charge of building the Union Pacific RR, John Rawlings. Agreed that they are not garden spots.

Most of 1-80 in Wyoming is pretty awful, actually. If you really want to see the beauty of Wyoming, you head north to the Wind River mountains, Yellowstone, Big Horn Mountains and eastern edge of the Black Hills, where Devil's Tower is. If you want boring, rough towns, drive along 1-80. Somebody below noted how terrible Rawlins is. Yeah, it is. It's also where the state penitentiary is. I suppose the Flaming Gorge area near the Colorado border is nice, but that stretch of 1-80 is best driven at night with a full tank of gas.

Enjoyed watching this, related a lot to a trip my family did last summer, went from Chicago to Yellowstone, most of it unplanned, following i-80 most of way, road tripping really does open your eyes and teach you more about each state/region. Wyoming was amazing obviously, really liked the Laramie and medicine now forest area outside of it, and how can you beat Jackson hole/Teton/Yellowstone. But western Nebraska was the surprise of the trip! Had this desolate beauty to it, great buttes, bluffs and western sandy scenery! (Most don’t know Nebraska has this) we enjoyed driving there, and stayed at great hotel in north platte, area was nice and clean. Cool to hear you enjoyed Nebraska too. Runza was great! Oh and also Iowa was a pleasant surprise, extremely hilly, cool views, and lots of clean and fun towns. Excellent town called Altoona has an excellent casino resort and Iowa has the best gas stations in my opinion! Keep on doing great videos man! 🎉👍
