Welcome to Zimbabwe! This country has great nature, lots of wild animals, but also a lot of history and interesting cultural sights. We drive through the country from Botswana to see ancient rock paintings, rock formations, beautiful mountain landscape and many safari animals. We stay in the town of Bulawayo, experience the Zimbabwean culture and drive down south through Matobo National Park.
In the previous episodes you saw how we started this road trip in Cape Town South-Africa. From there we drove the Cape Namibia Route along the West Coast to look for animals in the Kalahari Desert. After that we crossed the border into Namibia, where we drove straight through the world's highest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei. We saw all the sights in Namibia and wend on a safari in Etosha National Park. After that we drove to Botswana and found ourselves stuck in bad weather. Luckily we got towed out of the mud, to continue the road trip among wild animals everywhere. Now we visit Zimbabwe and head on to the Kruger National Park, to finally deliver the camper in Johannesburg South-Africa again.
Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. Then you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, Zanzibar & Tanzania, South-Africa, Namibia and Botswana, Zimbabwe is already destination number 25 on the big trip. We have also been away from home for over a year now. Follow us on this world tour, first in Zimbabwe and then to many more beautiful destinations in Africa! We still travel non-stop all year and film everything, with a new episode every week. Also take a look at instagram @woutoftheworld or www.woutoftheworld.nl

I lived in Bullawayo till 1983, and we would ride our bicycles to Matopas National Park. In those days, you would find many animals, including rhino pity, they are no longer there today.

To add some context, Zimbabwe is named after Great Zimbabwe which is not far from Masvingo town, Lake Mutirikwi - An old civilisation existed there for the Shona people during the Iron Age, during the Rhodesian times, Great Zimbabwe was simply called Zimbabwe which is “House of stone”. Zimbabwe is named after this, but also fits in with the type of stone (balancing rocks-Kopje’s), granite structures seen everywhere in Zimbabwe.

It is very touristic. It's just that your visit was short. Actually there is so much more to see. You cannit say you visited Zimbabwe without seeing the Vic falls, the Eastern Highlands,, Lake Kariba, Mana pools and many more .

That guy is a joker with a capital "J" who goes to visit Zimbabwe and starts off in Bulawayo and then goes back to S. Africa? Seriously ! You went to visit Zim and didn't go to Vic Falls, Game parks, Kariba, Mana pools, Eastern Highlands, I could go on. My conclusion is Munu uyu anga Asina mari... He should have been honest. Harare has more to offer than what I have seen in Holland.

Bulawayo was an amazing city before majority rule. Unfortunately the majority of the African majority speaks Shona. The Mashona still remember and resent being run off the mountain where Bulawayo is today by Mzikikazi - one of Shaka Zulus generals who named his kraal there Kwabulawayo after Shakas Kraal of the same name in what is now South Africa. Bukawayo, and all of Matabeleland get very littke by way of support from the Shona government in Harare. Gotta hate it when you are not the same language group as the dictators.
