June 10, 2024 -- Michigan residents don't have to hit the road for long before realizing 2024 is shaping up to be the "summer of the orange barrel." Following decades of underinvestment and voiced frustration from taxpayers, roads and bridges are finally seeing many of the improvements they've long needed.
In this video, State Transportation Director Bradley C. Weiferich addresses concerns about so much work happening currently, explaining why this work is happening and why this will be a good thing for the state moving forward. More importantly, he also asks for everyone to continue driving safely through work zones.

How is the rail improvement going along the Wolverine line? Even though day time trains are suspended from May 6th to October 18th, I can't find any information on it.

I would love to see MDOT “serving and connecting people, communities, and the economy through transportation” by deprioritizing highway construction and focusing on mass transit. The governor and others keep commissioning studies that show highways sever and pollute neighborhoods, and it is time for MDOT to seriously consider these studies. Multiple people spoke about this at the last State Transportation Committee (STC) meeting, at which Mr. Wieferich was in attendance. It would be great to see Mr. Wieferich further embrace mass transit and encourage a mindset in MDOT to shift toward this, rather than promote benefits of highway construction which simply are not real. Mass transit has benefits far more in line with the MDOT mission Mr. Wieferich stated.

Hi there! MDOT certainly supports all modes of transportation, including transit. MDOT will also continue to apply the yearly transportation budget as written and passed into law through the legislative process (MDOT does not set its own budget, nor does it control the amounts appropriated for each mode of transportation). Thanks for following MDOT!

@@MichiganDOT It seems abundantly clear that in MDOT’s eyes some forms of transit - particularly private passenger cars - are more important than others. While MDOT certainly does not have full control of its budget and is at the whim of the legislature, you have full control over how you communicate your priorities to the public. And the way you communicate makes it seem that people who walk, bicycle, and use public transit are not as important as those who drive in Michigan. Please, work on this communication style. As always, we will continue to work with our local MDOT working-level teams - we enjoy doing this - but we would also like to see MDOT management recognize the power they have in leading this conversation and would like to see them push it in the right direction. Thanks 🙏

Sorry to hear you feel that way. As we mentioned, MDOT's priority is safety as we continue to support all modes of transportation and follow the budget law as written. Our communications certainly cover the topics at hand regarding those modes. In this case, we're thanking folks for their patience during the record amount of road and bridge work taking place currently, as well as reminding them about how important it is to drive safely through those work zones. Thanks again for following MDOT!
