Roadtrip Tour of "The Hobby Shop" in Ames, IA

While on a recent roadtrip to Chicago, ish, I made a couple stops. I had asked on FB and these were planned visits. The Hobby Shop is in downtown Ames IA, has had 3 owners but has been in business continuously, in the same location, since 1949. If I remember correctly. The have a lengthy inventory supporting hobbies of all types, model cars, aircraft & armour, trains, rockets, slot cars, pinewood derby and even Gundam. The owner was friendly and helpful and I really enjoyed visiting. If you're in, or near, Ames, IA stop in and show some support. We all wish there were more hobby stores like this!

Nice video Grady. The Hobby Shop has a great selection of kits to choose from. My hometown never had a regular hobby shop that is the reason I wanted to open one after I graduated from HS and call it Hobby Barn thus the name of my channel. Hey Grady, thanks for the look at that hobby shop! I'd love to see the train shop here in KC. I'm not sure when if ever I'd be able to get there. I've been to Hobby Haven many times, mainly when they were at the mall. It's sad that there's so few mom and pop hobby shops around. It's just so easy to buy and sell on ebay or wherever online that I think these days it is hard to keep a brick and mortar shop going.

I'll put it on my list of videos to make. It's Midwest Model Railroad in Independence, MO. I know they were planning on expanding to auto and possibly Gundam. For me they have the closest/best selection of paints and supplies.

I try to shop local as much as possible in all things. I just resent the corporate culture quite a bit, especially in retail.

You're a little over 5 hours from me. Here in Sioux Falls, SD, we have three shops, one is heavy into R/C, one is a mixed shop that has R/C, scuba diving stuff and models, the last one is Hobby Lobby. Not the best assortment or prices here. That shop you've found there looks pretty darn good. Thanks for sharing!! Take care Grady!

So you're pretty close to Adam @ SoDak. Yeah, I don't count Hobby Lobby. They give a nod, but definitely not a hobby shop. R/C, scuba and models, ya say? In South Dakota, ya say? LOL

Wow I'm in Farmington, MO and grew up as a small child in the KC area. I moved down to Warsaw, MO at around 11 but its cool know your just another person in Old Misery with me. I nice kit for sure my buddy Big Charlie is into wagons really bad. I wish I had a favorite but I have none near me so I have to look online and make most of my purchases like that. Thomas, I'm familiar with Warsaw, my mom bought us a lake lot there when I was a kid. Lot's of great memories. I have lots of folks from Lake of the Ozarks to Clinton to Warsaw. I wonder if anyone has a video build of that 310. Thnaks for watching!

Great time really I've not been to that side of the state to just hang out for over 20 years plus and longer than that for some areas. You mention Clinton and I wonder if this there that I know you or at least remember your face. Because I have seen you before and it was something you said in that last video about the 310 that summed it up for me. It been a long time but we crossed paths before.
