In u.s. keeping round numbers to simplify. If annual income is 1m and total tax paid was 300k. He can itemize 50k as non taxable 1m-50k +12,500 = 962k as new taxable income. Minumum allowable last year was 12,500 everyone gets to subtract, it usually goes up every year. 962000× 30% = 288,600. 300k -288,600= 11,400 Spend 50, get 11 (roughly) it works better the more you have, house, kids depreciation ect. Feels like some people have the idea of spend 50k as "write off" and think "free" 50k spent was actually only 38k ish spent
