I've been wanting to feature this park for a while. If you're ever in the Dayton, Ohio area, I'd encourage you to go check it out yourself. Special thanks to Rob Dyrdek, DC Shoes and Alien Workshop for making this park a reality back in the mid-2000s.

What an amazing skate park for the street skater. I appreciate the ledge corners being made from concrete and not steel (other than the repaired ones). I've never adjusted to steel edges and prefer the raw tactility of a concrete edge - the bite it gives you provides so much more feedback. The only criticism I have of the original design is rail sizes. This would be a difficult place to learn rails if you're not super talented. The smallest rail I can see is still quite high. Having some flat-bars or even some low 1ft high rails would help people go from zero to skating the rails here. We can find rails of those sizes in the wild, so they don't break the authenticity strived for here. Which comes back to the comments RE quarter pipes. This place is designed to mimic urban architecture that many of us skated exclusively in the 90's. We didn't see quarter pipes or curved transitions in the cities we skated, so adapted to skating ledges, curbs, benches, gaps, stairs, rails, banks. This place is a true reflection of that environment.

Best comment! Thank you for taking the time to write this out. I completely agree with you on the rails. The lowest rail (the one down the 3 stair) is still about 22 inches off the ground. Furthermore every single rail is rectangular which aesthetically is nice, but not ideal for smith grinds, feebles, etc. Only having one shape of rail also limits progression. Someone suggested Street League doing a contest here. That would be a great opportunity to make some improvements like the ones you suggested.

I agree wholeheartedly that concrete ledges feel much better than metal- but they just don't last long enough for the money that gets invested into a park like this. It sucks- but a lot of the ledges got chunked and round to the point that they weren't really that fun to skate after just a few years. Granite or marble would've lasted longer but would have cost wayyyy more and would probably have rounded/chunked out by now too. Steel ledges are kind of a necessary evil unfortunately, and I think this park in particular taught park builders that lesson.

Me and a few friends drove 7 hours from Toronto Ontario area back in 2005 and 2006 for the opening of this skate plaza. We were 17 - 18 at the time. It was a literal dream. It was incredible. It looks like from this video a lot of the ledges have been repaired with a steel siding. Anyway, I kickflipped the 9. Crooked the 7 stair rail, 360 flipped the grass gap thing. 50 - 50 the double stair rail. It was a memory and a trip I will never ever forget. I turn 37 years old this year. I might need to make one last harahh back to this place before its too late.

I first went and skate this when it first opened and several times over the years since. The one thing I wish they would have incorporated and what I think makes a park, is including beginner and intermediate level obstacles. This park is not meant for someone who is just starting out or really even an intermediate level skater. Every single rail in the park is just huge. Glad the park started a trend towards building more plazas throughout the US.
@stvnhill
@stvnhill 3 месяца назад
Totally agree. The Pier 7 style pads are the only thing that is low enough for a beginner. Hopefully the city invest some money into redesigning parts of the plaza to appeal to a wider group of skill levels.

I remember when they made the trip here in Street Dreams 😂 sick video though. I'm 35 from CT and remember when this place opened. I was either junior or senior in high school in the peak of my skateboarding career. I wanted to make a trip after i graduated, but honestly completely forgot about the place. I just recently picked up a board again after getting off dope. My legs are completely shakey still and I can barely ollie, but i gotta make a trip here one summer, it's only like 8-10 hours from me.

A real life relic. Went there once way back and it felt like all the flat ledge were designed to high and all the banks and dimensions of the banks and obstacles weren’t mellow or fun. Most the rails were good but it could have been a bit more chill if the outer stuff was more built for docking around. To sum it up I felt right away it was a terrible park unfun park and I couldn’t imagine growing up with a park like this one. It was boring and only the stairs, handrails and a few hubbas were decent. We all literally went there for about 30-45 mins and said screw this place and drove to Cleveland and skated the city.
@hygiverse
@hygiverse 3 месяца назад
20 years later those ledges look pretty rough and would wear out trucks and decks so fast. The quality of the flat ground cement has worn out a lot and the height of a lot of obstacles are a few inches too high for comfortable regular use.

The ledges are all too high. The ledges being to high is an unspoken about construction error made by the company who built it. Apparently some ledges were even removed and replaced delaying it's opening, but the rest of the park was left as is cause they didn't have the budget to rebuild the whole thing. Every ledge and rail on average is 2 -8 inches to tall. 😢

Looks like all the ledges they tried to fix. The angle iorn is upsidedown.
@stvnhill
@stvnhill 3 месяца назад
The angle iron is correct. If they had set it like you would on a wooden box, it would have broken off within a year or two. Instead they cut the rounded/chunked edges of the original concrete and then anchored the angle iron and poured concrete on top of that. This way it will last for years.
@timfuji3796

The angle iron facing up like this also leaves the cement top for more authentic feeling slides. Even crooks feel better on this style than all metal, it’s the best imo.

I will just say that it's important to consider why this plaza is the way that it is. At the time the plaza was built (2004-2005) most skateparks constructed were large bowl style parks (picture 10+ foot transitions). I did a video on one of these called Kokomo Pipeline. The plaza was intended to fill a void in the lack of street-centric parks, particularly since real street spots like Love Park and Embarcadero were almost always a bust. Nowadays, you see more balance between street and transition. While you can still debate the necessity of that given that there are 4-5 street skaters for every transition skater, street skating isn't as looked down on socially as it used to be. Thus you probably won't see any more street plaza like this being built in the future (unless you count the new UN plaza in San Francisco).
@thehandleiwantedwasntavailable
@thehandleiwantedwasntavailable 3 месяца назад
Street skaters such as myself have had the opposite problem - park after park constructed over the decades with massive transitions, and the odd flat bar stuck in an awkward corner. This park looks amazing to me. Still, I'd appreciate the odd bank or quarter to help with flow.
