Chris Cornell was in Soundgarden at the time and was friends with all of them. Stone and Jeff added Mike McCready (friend of Stones) and began auditioning new singers for their new project and Eddie put lyrics to a demo tape that was given to him by Jack Irons (another former Pearl Jam guitarist). Eddie moved from San Diego to Seattle and put lyrics to this demo he was given and Stone and Jeff liked what he did. The songs were Once, Alive, and Footsteps.
Around this time Temple of the Dog was put together as a tribute to Andrew and Vedder was put on it as well...it was his first song pre Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam debuted as Mookie Blaylock for one show at The Off Ramp in Seattle and then renamed themselves Pearl Jam...the rest is rock history
yeah I know he was in bad radio...didnt mention it though...check out his early demos if you get a chance...they are really cool... one step up - springsteen cover he did believe you me- great song and the early version of betterman...
the entire album is dedicated to Andrew wood who was a friend and room mate. for Chris, this is an emotional affair. Eddie Vadder was unknown till then but chris gave him a chance
Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were part of Motherlove Bone before they formed Pearl Jam. Andrew Wood was the lead singer of Mother Love Bone and the band was just about to make it big when Andrew died of a heroin overdose.
