I do wish that insurance co's would be lobbied to pay for colonoscopies in between 5 years. They will only pay for one colonoscopy every 5 years. If you want one before that, the individual has to pay for it.

@@Desmondbrown73 There are different kinds of preps (not sure why). Mine was ~12 hours of evening/sleep/morning. Maybe 24 hours, I don't recall if there were eating restrictions before starting the cocktail. Even the drink wasn't bad at all.

@@trick351 Yes me too, it's horrible and it happened so quick, she got her diagnosis and in 6 months gone, despite having her colonoscopy within the first month of diagnosis. It is rough. I was glad my dad had his exam for it. So far so good for him.

I had one. The cleanse routine had me throwing up. My blood pressure is usually low, so they weren’t going to do the procedure when they found it was 98/50. I told them come back and take it again in a minute. I got it up to 128/60-anger. I woke up during the procedure to a terrible pain in my left side. I yelled and they put me under again. United Healthcare had approved the procedure, and then wouldn’t pay for it. So, I haven’t had another. All that, and the fact that I am now all alone, widow and now childless.No one to take me or bring me home.

If you live near a 7th Day Adventist Church, you could go there (they usually meet on Wednesday evenings and they always meet on Saturday mornings) and ask if there is a Dorcas group. word of advice, try to eat healthier. Less grains, less sugar, less of all sugar types, less vegetable oils. less bread, even less fibre rich bread, less fibre, less fruits, less vegetables. Buttered bacon is magic.

I mean it's worth acknowledging that the doctor said that diet doesn't particularly matter for preventing polyps. Some people are just more prone to getting them.

@@geson86 "Buttered bacon" - even if that did help against colon cancer, you'd be switching cancer against all sorts of heart diseases 😄.

My mother discovered her diverticulitis in her late 60s when one burst. She struggled with weight gain, hernias and surgeries that made the last 15 years of her life miserable. It's very likely that starting regular colonoscopies earlier might have prevented immeasurable pain.

If there's one thing you want to do, it's follow the directions for the prep closely. You don't want to do a half-assed job and have the doctor's visibility reduced. Due to family history, I have them every five years and as of last month I have three under my belt.

Apparently, my work is doing some sort of charity probing event and I have been volunteered. I mean, I do homebrew beer, so I've got a bottle brush, but I don't know how far up they go. Do I need and extension rod?

They typically use propofol for sedation, and yes it's fast, and it feels like the most restful sleep ever.

It's not strong, what it actually does is just prevent you from forming memories. You just don't remember what they did. You can't be too out of it as they may need you to move around.

@@guruofendtimes819 You should always be aware of risks and consider what's best for you... however, only 1.6% of colonoscopies result in complications, and about 0.5% of complications are fatal which is approximately 0.00008%. ~4% of people will develop colon cancer in their life. The overall survival rate (including with early detection) is about 65%, which increases to 90% for those whose cancer is detected early. You do you, but I think the numbers speak for themselves, especially with a history of Colon cancer in my family. It would seem to me to be a far better choice for most people to follow the advice of their doctors and the medical community at large, and get a colonoscopy in their 40's, and a follow-up every decade or so... Even if some random dude on the internet, likely with no qualifications, tries to scare them off from making wise choices.

I agree on the prep side - that stuff can be brutal. (Part of me wishes the guys had done a video complete with the prep & their candid reactions to it!)

Until a couple of years ago, the recommended age was 50 for the first one (every ten years after that if nothing was spotted), but since so many young people were being diagnosed with and dying from colorectal cancer, the ACS changed the recommendation to 45.

They've apparently changed the recommended age to start screening, because it used to be 50 yrs old.

@@MB199494 Men and women are equally at risk for colon cancer and both are recommended to get colonoscopies starting at age 45. Men are more likely to get rectal cancer.

That shouldn’t stop anyone from doing the screening though! Better to find something early if you can. Would be nice if insurers covered it if it starts as screening and they find something though, instead of making it diagnostic and charging for it. I mean really, does that seem fair? I’ll bet some people put it off because they are afraid that there will be a polyp and then they will have to pay for the procedure.

Yeah, I had that too. I was having some digestive troubles and since I had to have the colonoscopy anyway, while they were at it, they went in from both ends. I had a couple of tiny polyps removed and everything else was fine.

@@pepsiwepsi1952 Hi, hope you don't mind me popping into this convo to give you my symptoms. No one in my huge amount of blood relatives, alive and passed, had colorectal cancer. I was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer last year at the age of 42. I started having noticeable small amounts of blood in my stool and or on toilet paper in 2017. It was every 3 to 4 months. Took the at home blood in stool test. It came back negative. I also started having diahrea, change in bowel habits. Then towards the end of 2020 I became anemic. Noticed blood about once a month and bowel movements were 4 to 6 times a day. In 2021 I couldn't leave the house because I needed to be near a toilet. Anemia was very bad. Also had gassy rumbling in rectum area, if that makes sense. Especially when waking up in morning. Also, as soon as I woke up in the morning I had to go. Finally had a colonoscopy in August 2021 and surgery in September 2021. Couple weeks before surgery I started having the ribbon like stools. If you're asking because you're having symptoms, don't wait like I did. I was very lucky that it was only stage 2 after having symptoms for so long. Colonoscopy, and switching doctors to take me and my symptoms seriously, saved my life. Talk to your doctor if you're having any symptoms or concerns.

I threw up after the last glass of horrible stuff. There was no way that I was going to reschedule and go through that again. To add insult to injury, United Healthcare, after approving the procedure, didn’t pay. Something about the doctor was in network but where he did it wasn’t. It wasn’t done in the hospital part of the huge building.

Bet they were on the phone with each other seeing whose prep kicked in first if they're that competitive 🤣

The prep was horrible, so much so that I cried when I had to slug the second dose of it. I also had issues when I woke up. It took four hours to do the procedure because of an undiagnosed hernia, and when I regained consciousness, I had enough nausea and pain to light up a mid-sized city. But I will do it again in three years because they did find some polyps.

@@rosemorris7912 Pardon my curiosity, you don't have to answer, but what happens when you have an undiagnosed hernia? Did it prevent you from falling asleep before the procedure? Just wondering because I have several disc hernias and I have to sleep in a very particular position to avoid any pain. I can't imagine how I would be able to have any kind of medical procedure if I had to lie down in a hospital. I'm supposed to do a colonoscopy soon.
