Thank you! I've been wondering what beat since I saw "Scratch" when it came out. I didn't have suitable turntables back then, but I eventually got Numark's and now my Technics. And I stumbled upon Super Duck Breaks a few years ago, so now I'm set.
@pliskin100 How does that make any sense? Turntables are more complicated than a single drum, but a drum is still considered an instrument. It's about mastery and skill, not about the innate difficulty of playing the instrument.
I don't know why, but I've never really understood it because it looks like braille. After watching this it totally makes way more sense. Thanks Rob Swift
@ Easy Fader :: pls Add "Transcribed by dj Raedawn" to the Credits.....I feel it's quite important for ppl to know the history behind the TTM system...Thanx Fam.
what about the article in Sift magazine and rap pages magazine? both article were in summer 1999 and you gave the fundamentals to John Carluccio not until december 1999
@pliskin100 Sure that's all well and good, but could one not also argue, that what a DJ does can be just as complex? Sure it may not be "classical" like Beethoven or someone of similar repute, but that doesn't take anything away from those whom can do what a decent DJ does, in making tracks that mesh well together along with adding their own creative flair to blend them all together. Different styles of creativity they may be, but one is not more superior than the other, that is merely opinion.
@pliskin100 I agree with you there. But I don't watch MTV for that very reason. They're just Pop songs, they don't show off much in the way of creative talent through music. I listen to plenty of stuff where I think "This Band/Person is actually very good at what they do", whether it's through the lyrics, or the instruments and how they're used. I can appreciate the kind of stuff this individual does for that very reason. It's not what I prefer but I still like due to the ability he has shown.
+pj reed: I'm sure you don't care anymore, but the sample is from Jackie Chan's classic "Snake and Crane: Arts of Shaolin." It's a fantastic movie if you want to see lots of kung fu with not much downtime.
The Notation ist not 100% correct in Speed, No? Cause the crabs at First end with a faster Backwards handmovement while in the Notation its Not that clearly visible
@schism54 I'm also just starting. I am using 2 numark tt 1650, they are kinda low torque (which is bad) but they are great for starting out. Basically, you want 2 direct drive turntables, a 3 channel mixer, and a stereo that has a line in, for a basic set up. Dj qbert, one of the best turntablists to ever touch vinyl, offers a dj school online, called scratch university. He also has a DVD called do it yourself scratching.
@Kutan I'm not talking about music genres, I'm talking about what is considered an instrument. My friend spend 16 years learning the piano and he now spends his collage music classes competing with "djs" who get better grades with him, despite the fact that he can play Beethoven's Symphony's blindfolded.
@Schism54 if you are lookin' for some equipment to start...I recomend any turntable that says on it "Direct Drive Turntable System" or some like that...just make sure the platter spins xD and a grat mixer is a Bheringher VMX 200 and is not too expensive...with really good faders (Y) if u need more tips just send me a message... CJ.VA.PAZ
does anyone know where that qoute at the beginning came from? "I know you're good but still you are all alone here now i think this old house will become your tomb" thanks for your help in advance
@Schism54 DO NOT get belt driven turntables, make sure they are direct drive (especially if your wanting to scratch) I've had gemini XL-(500s?) which weren't very good decks, but after learning to spin on those, i could spin on just about anything! I have a basic set of numarks, but for a little extra cash you can get the model that will let you drastically change the pitch and play the record backwards. There is ALOT you can do with being able to adjust the pitch as much as you want!!!
@dmcn19 You can't just consider anyone who disagrees with you on the internet a troll. That's just a mental sheild against my arguments.Let me clarify first,i'm a big fan of Tiesto and Deadmau5. Both are Djs who use the turntables, but they contruct their music from the ground up and only use mixers for their songs. Hip Hop and rap music traditionally uses the complete opposite but electronic hip hop is more common now. The BEP are not artists in the same way someone like 50 cent is not a singer
@Kutan One style can definitely be superior. Not by sound because that is subjective, but what I'm talking about complexity, substance and architecture of a musical piece. Have you listened to the shit that's on MTV today? It's the same repetitive song over and over again. When people like Rebecca Black and fucking Justin Beiber are popular I have no faith in society.
@pliskin100 Hmm... I understand what you are trying to say, I just think you are wrong. Also, I still don't see the joke. But I'm starting to realize you are trolling; you make very little sense. It's interesting that we have such different opinions about this; it seems I come from a similar musical background as you (I play classical guitar and piano, and I'm not really into the style of music in this video).
@Kutan But, unfortunately, fact =/= opinion, and for every one person that hates Rebecca and Justin there is an individual who cannot get enough and that is the music they swear by and nothing we say or do can dissuade them from that. No form of Music is superior for this reason, there can only exist music we as individuals prefer, and music that we absolutely cannot stand. I listen to music for the creativity involves and how it is demonstrated. But I hate Pop... really hate it. XD
@dmcn19 WOOSH. My joke and metaphor : - your head: _. Let me clarify beacsaue you didn't seem to pick up on it. Literallly, an instrument can be a stick. Cultrually, a piano or violin requires finess, dexterity and skill. Turn tables are for people that don't have culture or an education, but still want to make music. I spent years learning piano, guitar and drums and it's hilarious to me that kids watch 50 cent videos and try and immiate him.
